EVE Online Collides With Dust 514

Come January 10th, there will be a whole new way to bombard your Dust enemies.

Dust 514 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118055-CCP-Reveals-How-Dust-514-and-Eve-Online-Interact], the planet-based companion game to space opera EVE Online, has until now been entirely separate from its sibling, but that's about to change. As of January 10th, the two systems will merge, and EVE players will get to play in the same sandbox as Dust, or vice versa.

This brings with it a number of new options, among them the chance to bombard your Dust foes from space. Tactical Strike is the first option on the menu, introducing long-range, high precision explosive munitions launched from orbital platforms at hapless ground targets. Faction Warfare may be of more interest to EVE players, in that it helps them take over planets by backing ground-based mercenary factions.

"It is of course very important that we do not upset the serious business of internet spaceships," says spokesman CCP Nullarbor, and that means the ISK economy will be on a form of lockdown even after the merger. There will be no ISK transfer between Dust mercenaries and EVE players, at least for the moment. That block won't last forever; just until the game economies have reached some sort of equilibrium.

A more accurate post I've never witnessed :)
More importantly, it allows us thinking (or... evil/scheming /conniving) players to finally start griefing FPS players. That's right, it's going to be PC-only players in the role of battlefield demigod over console FPS players, it's everything many of us have always wanted.

Until you get Sniped by a dust bunny thanks to the Anti-ship guns they are getting, or ganked by other eve players as you do have to orbit the planet in a known location which makes you a very nice target...

We might be Demi-gods, but we die like the rest :p

But then we come back, because we're immortal.

I hope this line wasn't meant to be funny, because I almost pissed myself when I read it.

Seeing as this is CCP talking (The guys who run the game partially based on griefing each other mercilessly), that line was probably meant just like you read it.

I have no interest in playing either game but I am definitely paying close attention to this to see how it works out. I think it's a really cool idea and I hope it does but well let's just say I'm not super optimistic about the long term prospects of this merger.

Ah but then so are they?

Serious note on game play though, I did become a little giddy watching my damage from orbit. Seeing several you did '617 damage to -player name-' is quite cool. Im just hoping they up the effects when shooting the planets themselves.

This is such a cool concept. Lets hope its functional. And lets hope it becomes deep enough that Dust plays end up trapped in EVE politics. There are so many potential newbies to be obliterated before they realise that their opponents have _actual_ spy networks

Scientists have finally found a new breakthrough in shooter trolling technology.

Keep in mind that orbital guns can't defend themselves, so it's gonna be one of them crazy power struggles instead of a straight up game over option.

Its cool really, us immortal Demigods get to show the gropos how you really fight a war. From orbit dropping megatons of fiery death.

There's so much cringe factor in this thread. From this meme worthy line:

"It is of course very important that we do not upset the serious business of internet spaceships,"

to the slightly more pathetic:

"More importantly, it allows us thinking (or... evil/scheming /conniving) players to finally start griefing FPS players. That's right, it's going to be PC-only players in the role of battlefield demigod over console FPS players."

EVE players, I love you so much. Your replies to this thread make me so happy.

OT: I don't play EVE or Dust, but almost all the news that comes out of EVE usually results in a smile. Keep being awesome! (I hope it all works out and enriches both games)

I don't play EVE Online or Dust 514, and I don't plan on ever playing them, but the cool, innovative things they do make me very happy to hear about.

"The serious business of internet spaceships" is already a meme in the EVE community going back years and years, the devs were just reflecting it.

The Dust players can grief the space players back, they can hold resources and sovereignty to ransom. Then the space players have to organize a Dust corp to try and help them take the territory. If the Dust players are any good they will make space based allies and fight back.

Its about politics and diplomacy as much as it is fighting. Dust players and EVE players need to work together, if a Dust corp is having problems with orbital bombardment they need to make some space friends to sort shit out. If they just whine about how OP it is and QQ instead of sorting it out its their own fault.

Considering in this [http://www.destructoid.com/breaking-goonfleet-stomps-band-of-brothers-in-biggest-eve-takedown-ever-77421.phtml] (admittly old) news article detailing EVE player faction destroying another it states that a Titan would cost around $5,645 USD I'll say that that internet spaceships are indeed serious if they are that expensive.

Sometimes whole fleets of Titans and Motherships get destroyed, tens of thousands of dollars go up in smoke if you convert ISK to RL cash based on PLEX prices.

i guess the PC master race of pod pilots finally got a hold on the console peasants donwside.

its godo that they dont allow the donwpour of trillinos of isk into dust instantly, however i woudl very much like to profiteer from those peasants by selling them small and inefficient tanks to kill eachother with.
