WBIE Seeks Reversal of Mortal Kombat Ban in Australia

Warner Bros. Interactive is testing the might of Australia's new videogame classification guidelines.

It wasn't terribly surprising when Australia gave the denied [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108045-Mortal-Kombat-Banned-in-Australia]. It's a franchise that's famed for its graphically violent content, after all, and the country's classification board was notoriously twitchy about that sort of thing.

But it's a new year, with a new set of Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121292-Australias-R18-Classification-Starts-Today] for classification under the new R18+ classification category," the publisher told GameSpot AU.

There's no guarantee that the game will get the green light, since the R18+ category still allows for the exclusion of content that would earn an AO rating in North America. Even so, the great likelihood is that it will pass with relative ease, since Mortal Kombat would seem to be exactly the sort of game the new rating is intended to accommodate: violent - really violent - but also very popular with mainstream audiences.

Speaking as an Australian, I seriously doubt it. I have yet to see a single r18 rated game yet and I don't think I shall be seeing one soon.

Hopefully if this works, it'll be free with PS Plus :) Vita players were supposed to get it a few months back, but because it's been refused classification over here, we got the PSP version of Lego Batman instead...pretty poor tradeoff.

We already have a game getting the new classification

It's just that all previously Refused Classification games have to be resubmitted for reclassification, and the vast majority of them won't be resubmitted because they're way past their prime. Mortal Kombat however would still sell incredibly well in Australia so it's worth it for Warner Bros to resubmit it.

Oh fantastic, that would explain why I haven't seen any yet.

This is good news then.
