Sega Announces Aliens: Colonial Marines Bug Hunt DLC and Season Pass

Sega has announced the first DLC pack for Aliens: Colonial Marines as well as a "season pass" that will grant discounted access to all four planned expansions.

With Aliens: Colonial Marines just a few days away, Sega has taken the wraps off the first DLC release for the Gearbox-developed xenomorphic shooter. Bug Hunt will add a new multiplayer mode to the game in which players must face off against increasingly difficult waves of enemies in three new maps based on the classic sci-fi war flick Aliens.

Pricing for Bug Hunt wasn't revealed but Sega also announced that gamers can get a discount on it and the next three DLC releases - whatever they may be - by springing for a "season pass" for $29.99 or 2400 Microsoft points, which the company said represents nearly 40 percent off the individual purchase prices.

That could lead one to assume that the individual DLC packs will cost $9.99/800 Microsoft points, although that really stretches the definition of "almost 40 percent," but a Walmart poster spotted yesterday by a Gearbox forums [http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=241415] user claims it's actually a "$14.99 value." The poster also revealed that the Bug Hunt DLC is scheduled to come out on March 19 and, if you preorder from Walmart, you'll get it free, which takes a substantial bite out of the value of the season pass.

Aliens: Colonial Marines [http://www.amazon.com/Aliens-Colonial-Marines-Xbox-360/dp/B005THAX5Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1360347450&sr=8-1&keywords=Aliens+Colonial+Marines] comes out on February 12 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. A Wii U version is also in the works.

I guess if I ever decide to get this I'll just wait for the complete version instead of paying full price for an unfinished product.

Seems like this is the pattern anymore. I think I'll hold off and see some reviews before I start forking over $100. Hopeful, but skeptical.

So you pay for the season pass, Sega then have that money in the bank to gain interest or invest or w/e and you only get a discount on the bloody DLC? Thanks but no thanks, I have pre ordered this game but I will wait a while until they are desperate to sell more DLC when interest wains and get all of them cheaper than having to buy a bloody pass and the DLC.

I know I shouldn't be surprised anymore but they've announced the first DLC before the vanilla version is even on sale?

How do I get out of this chicken-shit outfit?

This and nothing but this. I'm a sucker for aliens and this might have been the first release-day purchase I will have made in quite some time. Guess I might buy the complete edition on its release day.

Post-release edit. Disaster averted! Thanks for the dlc announcement guys, i'll wait to get the game at $10, which seems to be what it's worth.

Another typical Chalk article with misleading text with only a slimmer of truth.

You'd pay $30 for the season pass which discounts the DLC, so you'd get about 4 DLCs worth about $10 roughly.

Either way, I'm not paying the price of another game for some DLC, so I'll give this one a miss.

Honestly it's like these publishers go out of their way to put people off buying their shit, it's like they don't even want money.

Officially, I dislike DLC being announced before the fucking game is out. Could atleast let the game be out for a little while. You don't need to announce DLC when a game is being released: the point of DLC is to add content to the game to re drum up interest in it.

They have to announce it, how else can they get the bulk of the revenue for the DLC to come on day one? This way most of the DLC cost is in their bank sooner at a time when interest in the game is at its highest so more people are likely to buy the pass, then because the people that bought that pass are more likely to buy the DLC when its released. If Sega had no pass and just released the DLC at full price the interest wanes over time and less DLC is sold.

Its a very clever piece of consumer manipulation, the consumer believes they are getting a good deal and good value for money. The reality its just a way for Sega to guarantee higher revenues for the DLC, it has the nice bonus of doubling early revenue for the game. For every player that buys the season pass will have paid £30 for the game and then £30 for the season pass, total spend £60, with more to come later as you are obviously going to buy the DLC as it releases.

They trick the customer into thinking they are getting a great deal when really the only one that benefits is Sega.

Just for the record, as far as I'm aware, it's the same situation as Borderlands 2, where paying for the Season Pass means you just get all four DLCs. What they mean by discount is that the four DLCs together would cost at least $40, but if you "pre-order" them this way, you only have to pay $30. You don't have to buy the DLCs as they come out.

I am looking forward immensely to this game, I have it pre-purchases and preloaded. But I'm pissed that they are selling MP modes. Almost makes me want to cancel my pre-order.

The image came from Facepunch. http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1175184&p=39499688&viewfull=1#post39499688

I remember a time when DLC excited me. Now they just rip out a part of the game that could just as easily be shipped with it and call it extra.

That's pretty much what it feels like for me with these shitty season passes and yet my roomie tries to slap me down with "But you're saving money and aren't losing out on anything"

YES I AM DUMBASS I'VE HAD MODES CUT FROM THE MAIN AND WHAT IF THE DLC TURNS OUT TO BE REALLY BAD?. (literally what I shouted at him after listening to his broken tune for 15 mins to which I apologised afterwards)

See my roomie doesn't think that far ahead in terms of value for money.

All in all I'd rather they include the Multi modes with the actual game and maybe add some proper beefy dlc down the line that isn't horribly bundled together forcing us to buy the whole bulk and chance wasting money.

You pay money to get a "discount" on the DLC.

FUCK. YOU.

EDIT:Yes it will be much more common for me to buy the game only on a discount.
