Successful PC Release Could Mean More Brutal Legend

Double Fine big cheese Tim Schafer says Brutal Legend multiplayer expansions are a possibility if the PC version of the game is a success.

Brutal Legend didn't exactly set the world on fire when it came out back in 2009, but the PC version announced earlier this month [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122107-Brutal-Legend-Coming-to-PC] is a second chance for the game to find its audience. And if it does, we might actually end up with even more of it.

"I would love to [add more to Brutal Legend on PC]," Schafer told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. "It's actually been fun to continue work on it. I mean, we have a wishlist from when we made this version. But since we are a small developer publishing it ourselves, we have to go with the best version we can make and then hope it's successful so we can add more."

Among the things Schafer would like to add to the game are playable factions that didn't make the cut the first time around, improved feedback about what your units are up to and possibly even an advanced gameplay mode with more conventional RTS controls. New single-player content, on the other hand, is much less likely - which is to say, it ain't gonna happen.

"Single player requires content, which means reengaging all the voice actors - which is something that was a lot easier for EA to pay for," Schafer continued. "Also, reengaging music licensing. I'd love to do that too, but I think that would involve more funding than we have cash on hand to do."

A full-on sequel is a possibility as well, although Schafer sounded somewhat less than optimistic about it. "We could probably afford to do it more if we got some funding. I feel like a Brutal sequel would cost twice as much as Psychonauts," he said. "It's easier to imagine Double Fine doing a sequel to Psychonauts. But for creative reasons, there's no preference of one over the other."

The PC version of Brutal Legend is slated to hit Steam [http://store.steampowered.com/app/225260/] on February 26.

Tim, baby, Brutal Legend just wasn't that good. Don't go wasting money trying to plug DLC or sequel bait for it unless you've got some darn good ideas on how to fix a game that was flawed at it's core.

Isn't Jack Black a huge fan of DF games? Shouldn't be too hard to get the main character at least.

Next time you make a Brutal Legend game, put on a warning lable that says "this is an RTS, not an action platformer". Because I didn't know that before I bought it on the PS3 years ago.

I'd rather see them take their Brutal Legend's money, and make another Psychonauts instead.

Brutal Legend deserves more recognition IMO. Its one of those underrated gems and I am glad to see it get a second chance.

And watch as the one of the few legitimate Brutal Legend fans gives his response to this prospect:

I may actually pick this up. I really love Sacrifice and I understand that this is somewhat similar, at least from a gameplay perspective.

I loved this game.

After seeing what Double Fine did with Iron Brigade, I've been dreaming of a Brutal Legend tower defense game. I would never stop playing it.

Well that seems pointless, the gameplay isn't the saving grace of this game. I'm happy for this PC release nevertheless, will buy for sure after my wallet regenerates from BioShock Infinite.

I'm looking forward to getting this game as soon as I can, I hope they somehow capitalize on the RTS segments and flesh it out a bit more for the PC crowd in mind (say, simply a skirmish mode would do wonders).

Hmmmm, it would be interesting if they made a sequel with the lessons they learned from the first. If they made it a dynasty warriors style brawler it could be a ton of fun. I thought the RTS battles were decent, but they just never fit the tone of the game. I can't imagine ANYTHING more cool than hacking through swathes of demons with an ax and a magical guitar while rocking out to Metallica. They couldn't just use the brawler combat from early in the game though, it was too simple and button-mashy. They would need something with a bit more substance.

If I can do multi with my mates, I will buy this game for the second time. I adored this game for it's warts and all. On topic of, I need to replay it at some point.

Shame a large chunk of the achievements are multiplayer. It's gonna be nigh on impossible to get them now.

Um what about the other systems? I got the game on the 360 and loved every second of it (the RTS parts were pretty simplistic though; I spent most of them leading zerg rushes which was fun as hell). Am I gonna get shafted if this works? (I'm guessing not and it's just the way the article was phrased but no harm in asking)

yes, [i/]yes[/i], [b/][i/]YES[/i][/b], aaahhhh... understandable though.

KickStarter then? I'd donate.
