PETA Protests Whaling in Assassin's Creed IV

It's getting harder and harder to take PETA seriously anymore.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is angry at a videogame's depiction of "animal cruelty." It has pointed its self-righteous finger of blame at videogames before, when it protested World of Warcraft's support of the fur industry. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90757-PETA-Protests-Seal-Slaughter-in-World-of-Warcraft] This time its disgust is focused on the latest installment of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise, for the revelation that the latest game, Black Flag, will feature whaling in some form.

"Whaling-that is, shooting whales with harpoons and leaving them to struggle for an hour or more before they die or are hacked apart while they are still alive-may seem like something out of the history books, but this bloody industry still goes on today in the face of international condemnation, and it's disgraceful for any game to glorify it. PETA encourages video game companies to create games that celebrate animals-not games that promote hurting and killing them."

It should be noted that very little is known of the role whaling will play in the game at this stage. It could possibly be an entirely optional minigame, it could only exist in a cutscene, or it could be an activity that only 'the bad guys' engage in. Nothing is really known other than whaling will be in the game in some form, as illustrated by the above screenshot.

Whaling is not something we have seen very often in videogames before. Assassin's Creed IV is a period piece, and in the time period it is set, it makes perfect sense for the characters to be engaged in whaling. There are dozens historic movies and books that depict whaling, such as the classic Moby Dick. Furthermore, Dishonored, a stealth-action FPS released last year, featured whale oil as the main resource of the game, yet was able to avoid the ire of PETA.

Whaling is a very sensitive subject at the moment. A blanket ban on commercial whaling has been in effect since 1986, yet several countries, most notably Japan and Norway, still continue to hunt whales under a scientific research loophole.

You know what? Congratulations PETA.

This is one of the greatest victories the group has ever had.

They actually posted nonsense about something CURRENT! It's a Christmas miracle.

Meh, the big problem with Whaling is that Whales became an endangered species as technology outstripped their abillity to replentish themselves. At the timeline depicted in this games it's a non-issue since Whales aren't being hunted to extinction.

Truthfully if Japan, Norway, and other Whalers (legal and not) backed off for a few decades so the population could replentish itself there probably wouldn't be that big of an issue as long as limits were enforced.

To me it's PETA being well... themselves, and kind of missing the point. The issue with Whaling was not people agreeing with their whole "animals are sacred" position, and arguably they are probably going to be in a serious minority here again given the context of the game.

At the end of the day humans are tool using predators, we are designed to hunt and kill, it's part of who we are, and not something we have any need to evolve past. That said we do not want to hunt all the prey we benefit from, after all if we consume all the animals there won't be any more left for us to kill, eat, and use. I agree with a lot of preservation efforts because doing so benefits us and our own instincts and needs.

This bug me because It's the same bullshit as removing the n-word from mark twains works. When things art set in the past moral values will he different and we might end up with characters who are racist or otherwise do things et wouldn't do today. Not having that and just having the main character and all their friends and allies be super duper enlightened for their time is just stupid

Or Far Cry 3.

Shark hunting with grenades and tiger hunting with assault rifles, that brings back memories.
Another FC 3 post, i've been wondering, is the game THAT good? Because I wouldn't mind picking it up.

ubisoft, listen to me very carefully, do NOT give into these psychotic morons. every time i hear another piece of news about peta, i hate them more and more. now they're the People for the Ethical Treatment of Digital Animals? are you fucking serious? maybe i missed it, but where was their complaints about Red Dead Redemption? i killed all manner of animals by bouncing a stick of dynamite of their skulls.

and lets not forget that you're going to be playing as an assassin, killing hundreds of people in all manner of horrific ways. but no, you're right, killing ones and zeros in the shape of a whale is a Serious business guyz! and what is their point anyways? do they fear that kids are gonna play that and immediately take to the sea with nothing more than a wooden ship and a harpoon? my god, i hate hate hate these imbeciles.

and this is all coming from a person who loves animals.

It's a pretty good sandbox and with the CryEngine its also very pretty. I haven't gotten that far into the story but what I've seen for myself corroborates with what's been said on the internet.

The PC version is saddled with Uplay, even if you buy it on Steam. So take heed if you dislike Ubisoft's attempt at a DRM service.

And yes the hunting can be very fun.

Dishonoured : Actual whaling. Not a peep.

Far Cry 3 : Flame roasting basically any animal you see. Not a peep.

Assassins Creed : A picture of a whale and no harpoon in sight. PROTEST!!!

Please PETA, we already know you are horrible hypocrites that prey on emotional women to support you, but at least have the decency to be consistent in your protesting of the hunting of digital animals. Why not start protesting Cabella's Dangerous Hunts?

I'm wondering why the entire Tomb Raider franchise escaped PETA's attention. And it seems everyone else has mentioned Dishonored already :)

What PETA don't seem to realise is that humans are animals as well... and this is a game which Quite Literally Glorifies the Killing of Humans! It is about Assassins.

It's argument is "don't consider yourself different from animals, you're an animal, you wouldn't tolerate humans being killed". Well actually we do, in fiction.

It would be really sad if you slaughtered thousands of humans and only had a moment of contemplation at the carnage if a single aquatic animal died.

Seems a group of people cannot distinguish between real life and computer generated pixels, maybe we should send them to pyschologists to examine their mental health. Now if they were protesting actual real life whaling groups that would be fair enough, but come on PETA this was an accepted practice during the time when this game takes place. It's like Slavery, it isn't an accepted practice anymore (for good reason) but before the American Revolution it was a common practice.
