Death And Destruction Abound In New Pacific Rim Image

Guillermo del Toro's upcoming "giant monsters battle giant robots" flick Pacific Rim is going to be epic, and we've got a picture of the oversized corpse to prove it.

This morning an image from Pacific Rim, an upcoming film directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Charlie Day, Idris Elba and Ron Perlman (among others), appeared on the movie's official Facebook page. That would the picture you see embedded above, though we urge you to visit its original location [http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=488070987925870&set=a.358131330919837.81394.175282252538080&type=1] as the picture loses a lot of important detail when reduced from its original size.

As you may know, Pacific Rim centers on a global monster attack and humanity's efforts to stave off this threat in the raddest possible fashion: By bolting young, attractive pilots into the cockpits of gigantic robots. If this sounds like the plot of any number of anime movies you've seen over the years, that's because del Toro has specifically designed this movie as a big-budget homage to the kaiju genre. For those of you unfamiliar, "kaiju" is a Japanese term that colloquially refers to films featuring giant monsters, and as you can see from the abominable corpse lying amidst the rubble of that ruined city, Pacific Rim certainly has some huge, otherworldly creatures.

"But you also promised us robots! Where are the robots?" I hear you shouting at your monitor in frustration. While del Toro's production team failed to complement this picture with another centered on one of the film's mechanized protagonists, the last Pacific Rim trailer [http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/pacificrim/] did a pretty solid job of depicting the metal behemoths. As it's a Hollywood trailer, it doesn't really show things off in full, but it does at least give you a nice feel for what you'll see when the movie hits theaters on July 12, 2013.

Since most of you are videogame fans, you'll also likely recognize a certain monotone voiceover found in that vignette. Yes, it's supposed to sound like that [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120087-Guillermo-del-Toro-Has-GlaDOS-On-Board-for-Sci-Fi-Movie], and Valve is aware of this. Del Toro included that voice specifically as an homage to Portal and Gabe Newell's firm is reportedly flattered by the inclusion.

You make me feel sad that there hasn't been a live action Neon Genesis Evangelion film. Although I probably shouldn't because it'd no doubt be terrible.

Pacific Rim is an unusual title, you'd expect the title to be something more "epic". It looks fairly interesting, but the monologue... urgh, it's just so cliché and unoriginal.

GLaDOS has an awesome voice, but it also means I can't take it seriously, when I see it in the context of an action movie.

Didn't even go to see The Avengers on opening day, but I may just do that for this. I may be almost as excited as MovieBob.

I turn 30 a week after release, so don't disappoint me, de Toro. I'll officially be old after it comes out, so I want it to be good.

Took the words out of my mouth.

I really want this movie to be good, but even if it is I fear for its box office performance. Oh well, even if the studio loses a ton of money on a hugely expensive new IP we'll still have the movie.

But it does open up the possibilities for brilliantly-titled porn versions.

Everything about this film seems fantastic so far. I'm letting myself get hyped; there's no way that Guillermo Del Toro can fuck up a film about giant robots vs giant monsters, starring Idris Elba and Ron Perlman.

Is summer here yet?

Also: Please don't suck and, if it doesn't hurt, let this do well so we can get more of it!

Loving all these pics they've been posting lately. In this case, I'm preferring pictures to trailers because they let me use my imagination and add more mystery to the 'monsters.'

I wonder if they'd bother shifting that corpse after the war, or just leave it there as a monument...

So, a girl in a Godzilla costume getting railed by a dude in a Gundam costume?
