PS Vita Impressed Retro City Rampage Creator

Game designer Brian Provinciano enjoyed working with Sony, but had some difficulties with Microsoft.

When a console debate flares up, it's not just ordinary gamers that take sides. Developers can be just as passionate when supporting preferred systems, perhaps more so, since they intimately understand each one's limits and capabilities. Super Meat Boy's Edmund McMillen, for example, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106429-Super-Meat-Boy-on-WiiWare-Would-Be-a-Piece-of-Sh-t>has openly shared his frustrations about working on certain gaming platforms in the past. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Retro City Rampage's creator Brian Provinciano met with IGN to list which consoles he enjoyed working on. Since the game <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retro_City_Rampage>has launched for most modern systems, Provinciano felt confident naming the PlayStation Vita as an ideal platform, despite the fact <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121979-Sony-Cuts-Vita-Sales-Predictions>that it hasn't really gained traction among gamers.

"As a developer, someone who's done development on every platform under the sun, the Vita SDK [was] just super well-put-together and easy to use," Provinciano told IGN. "Deployment on the Vita dev kit was as fast as PC. That's something that I've never seen before in a dev kit. That in itself made it such a pleasant experience."

Provinciano ranks the PC, PS3, and Vita as the easiest systems to develop and publish for. In particular, Provinciano was impressed with Sony's cross-buy and cross-save features, which are still rare in the industry. "If you were to do your game on, say, Wii U and 3DS, you'd be doing everything twice," he explained. "They're completely different systems. With Vita and PS3, there's a lot of similarities."

Unfortunately, Provinciano wasn't quite as generous when it came to his relationship with Microsoft. "With Microsoft especially, it's like I'm dealing with a corporation," he says of the publisher. "It's hard to plan things. You have very little control ... It was over a year of work and I don't know how many man-months just to deal with the Xbox side of the business things and all that other stuff. Whereas Steam was just three days, and then Steam is 100 percent feature-identical to the Xbox version."

The Vita hasn't had the best track record lately, despite its impressive system specifications. One of its biggest issues appears to be a high price point, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122535-Japanese-Vita-Sales-Quadruple-After-Price-Drop>considering that a discount in Japan immediately quadrupled its sales. It's very likely that a price drop in North America would have a similar effect, especially if the Vita continues to draw developers like Provinciano.

Perhaps there's a corrolation between the success of a company and the customer service that devs get. The PS3 and Vita both had rocky beginnings, but Sony's relationship with devs at least has proven positive for many. Microsoft, on the other hand, who's xbla had, for the longest time, outmatched PSN has reported to have been very annoying for both devs and gamers.

It's good to hear the vita getting more fanservice from devs. As a huge fan of the system, I hope to see more support from devs, both indie and the big leagues.

Please stop it with the sensationalist titles! Is the Escapist crew really trying to provoke the site's community so Mai'dah can have the pleasure of using her banhammer?

This is one of the less provocative/sensationalist titles I've seen on news around here lately. In that it's just saying a dev praised something. And they did.

I really hope this inspires more indie devs to develop for or port to the Vita. It's quite the powerhouse and would be perfect for the kind of indie games Steam has...

I thought the general consensus was that the PS3 was incredibly awkward to develop for due to its hardware setup? I do like the idea of cross saves and the way I could download FF7 on my PS3 and port it over to my PSP was always a Godsend. I miss both my PS3 and PSP. :/

What, did they walk out on your, or die in a car accident, or something?
Had to pawn them for rent money. On a related note, never enter into a joint contract with someone who is likely to piss off and leave you in the lurch financially. Harrumph.

Refreshing to see a console producer not pissing off indie devs for a change

Glad to see that devs like the vita. I really like my vita, but whenever some asks me if they should get one I feel like I have to tell them they should wait til it has more games. Once it has a better library and a price cut I'm sure sales will skyrocket. And seriously, larger/cheaper memory cards. I have a 64gb microsd and that was like $40, there's no excuse for $90 for a 32.

People were telling the devs this through e-mails and his Facebook fan page. One of the major reasons his game was a couple years past its original release date was due to MS' sluggishness and the devs want for a simultaneous release. He had to sacrifice those wants a bit due to people who pre-ordered the game getting pissed about the constant pushbacks. Then a May 2012 release date came.

And went.

Until a couple weeks before Oct 9th, the games release date(Oct 9th) was randomly announced. But only for the PC and PSN/PSVita.

XBLA didn't bother releasing it until Jan 2. 2013 and Nintendo's WiiWare was even worse with a Feb 28th release. This game has not been treated nicely over the past few years and it was made by a single guy. Sony gave this guy a chance. Let him demo his game on the Vita at conventions and shows all over the place with no release date for months. Major props to them for what they did for this game. I'm not even the biggest fan of the game and I can appreciate Sony being the easiest of the Big 3 console companies to give a damn about an indie game.
