Steve Jobs Biography Comes to Manga

The life story of Apple's founder and tech guru is being adapted for a Japanese comic anthology.

Whether you love or hate Apple products, it's hard not to admire Steve Jobs for making it all possible. As the co-founder and chairman of Apple, Jobs played a major role in the development of personal computers, not to mention mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad. That kind of impact has naturally inspired several attempts to memorialize Jobs following his death in 2011. <a href=http://www.amazon.ca/Steve-Jobs-Walter-Isaacson/dp/1451648537>His official biography by Walter Isaacson became an instant best-seller, while two versions of his life story <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_jobs#Films>should be coming to theaters this year. Perhaps the most unique retelling of Jobs' early years is a biographical manga within the monthly Kiss anthology, the first part of which was published this week.

The manga biography, created by Mari Yamazaki, directly adapts Isaacson's book through the genre's recognizable art style. Those of you who clicked the link to see if Manga Jobs trades ki blasts with Bill Gates will be sorely disappointed; readers instead learn about Jobs' relationship with his adopted parents, rebellious school years, and budding interest in engineering. The first chapter ends with the real-life meeting between Jobs and Steve Wozniak at their high school, an encounter that would lead to the Apple computer and all that followed.

Anyone who wants to read the manga themselves can track down this month's copy of Kiss, or order an electronic version <a href=http://viewer.bookstore.yahoo.co.jp/;_ylt=A7dPUzTNiU9RagEB2QPojft7?cid=178436&u0=3&u1=178439&u2=9&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fbookstore.yahoo.co.jp%2Ffree_magazine-178439%2F>from Yahoo Japan's digital bookstore. The story only appears to be available in its native Japanese, but its initial pages manage to present Jobs as the iconic figure in the later years of his life that many will recognize. If the story is popular, and what about Steve Jobs isn't at this point, we could very well see an English collection appear in Western bookstores in the near future.

This is the first news article on the Escapist that has literally made me laugh out loud.

It's just so utterly unnecessary that I can't help but cackle.

I'm getting REALLY sick of this 'cult of jobs'.

When it comes to the PC isn't NEAR as important as someone like Alan Turing or Robert Noyce or Steve Wozniak (one of the founders of Apple).

And, lets face it, Steve Jobs died so 'young' party because of his own stupidity.
Choosing 'alternative (READ: Bullshit) medication' instead of using REAL medication.

The Cult of Jobs sickens me.
If anyone in the computer world should have a cult of hipsters singing his praises it should be Wozniak or Turning.

AUGH! You beat me to it! Damn you and your impeccable timing, DVS! On a serious note, who is buying this? Like there's an actual market for this?
I'd buy it.....

I may be a fanboy.

I'd buy it. I'm interested in his life, and I like manga.

So how much of his insolent behavior is it going to show? Steve Jobs was a douchebag and there are several people in Apple that were way more important than him. Im usually cool with everything but i feel this is just gonna flaunt his case instead of showing us the man behind the mask.

Needs more giant robots and silly expressions. Okay, maybe I was just shocked by the good, sensible art and not a bishiekawaiiwhatever Jobs, but I stand by my statement. I want giant robots fighting. Instead of computer companies, Apple and Microsoft are giant robot companies fighting to the death. At first, I was joking about that, but now I really do want that to happen.

As for this actual manga, I'll be passing on it. Not to keen on the life story of Jobs, and if I was, I'd be reading the book, not the manga.

So, will this Manga cover how he stole and ripped off almost everything he claims to have "Invented". Will it cover how Wozniak did everything fo him?

An Alan Turing manga would be amazing. His life was very tragic, it's basically a story arc in and of itself.

Is this the one where he battles Bill Gates with his eleven meter burning dick-sword in robotic angel form? All the while spouting poorly translated one-liners?

Because I was there when it happened. And I demand recognition of the brave firefighters who lost their lives that day.

I can hope it happens like that Yaranaika scene. Jobs sees Wozniak sitting on bench in a jump suit. "Shall we do it Steve?"
