Metro: Last Light Survival Guide Introduces Post-War Moscow

Here's a cheerful look at some of the fun times that await in the dark, shattered tunnels of the Moscow Metro.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Nobody does a post-apocalypse like the Ukrainians. The blasted tunnels of the Metro are not a safe place where humanity gathers its strength before emerging to reclaim its rightful place as masters of the planet; they're a place where ugly death waits around every corner and people are still slaves to their basest instincts. The Rangers are the baddest of the bad in this blighted place, and even they have life expectancies not much better than that of First World War fighter pilots - it's a rough way to make a living.

To my mind, this first of three Metro: Last Light Survival Guide videos doesn't really capture the worst of the Metro, and the narrator's voice is upbeat (and healthy) enough to be misleading, in the sense that you might get the idea that some of the things that happen in this world aren't completely awful. There also appears to be a few "improvements" over the original; Artyom seems to have picked up a digital watch, which appears much easier to read than the analog unit he wore in 2033, and while it might just be my imagination, the surface world looks a wee little bit less hostile than it did the first time around.

None of this will be terribly new to Metro veterans, although it might be reassuring to see that the sequel appears to be every bit as awful as the original, but if you're a newcomer, this is what it's all about. Welcome to the Metro!

I read the book and am actually writing my dissertaion about Narrative shifts between the book and the first game.

To be honest, this is one of the most stark and uncomprimising settings that a game has ever produced. I enjoyed the DC wasteland, but I never felt in Fallout 3 a if there was a genuine threat from anyone or anything.

But in the Metro? Well, it's a given that you're gonna die. It's just a case of what gets you first.

Yeah; 4A & Glukhovsky both know how to do atmosphere well; I absolutely loved the book, less so the game.

Hopefully this game transcribes the book's "feel" better than 2033.

judging from this video, 2033 was much more dark, nihilistic, I suppose, when greenery starts to grow where I used to see snow and ice I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

If you played RIFT, you would know how super lush plant life are also your enemies.

true, but a least life re-emerges again after the nuclear holocaust, you didn't really see that in the previous installment.

I like it, though, despite being more of a "winter person", if thats a thing.

As excited as I want to be for this game, selling Ranger mode as DLC/preorder bonus is just horrible. Really, why would they sell Ranger mode as a preorder bonus, its like if Bethesda released fallout without the pipboy, and then have the pipboy be a preorder bonus or DLC, its just ridiculous.

Somehow, I ended up purchasing 3 copies of the original Metro 2033, and gave the other two away to a brother and a friend to show them it was a really atmospheric and enjoyable game.

Admittedly I won't be buying Last Light at launch, one because I want to wait until the reviews before I take the plunge, and two as I've already bought 5 games in the last month, and my budget set for games is rather empty right now. I really hope Last Light does well and gets the attention it deserves though.
