Game of Thrones Gets in Touch With the Force


Game of Thrones meets Star Wars in a fan edited video that brings the Jedi Order to the lands of Westeros. Warning: Minor Spoilers Ahead.

Some mash-ups come along and they just leave you asking "Why?" Then, out of the blue, comes a combination so brilliant that the question quickly becomes "Where have you been all my life?" Case in point, Australian cosplayer Erin May has created a video combining the reigning king of fantasy television with one of science fiction's most beloved film franchises. Editing footage from a recent episode of Game of Thrones, May took the simple step of substituting lightsabers for swords, transforming an already thrilling duel into an epic bout between medieval Jedi.

The video, drawing on the episode "Dark Wings, Dark Words," envisions Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister duking it out as Jedi and Sith Lord. The fight is edited down to about thirty seconds, a small fraction of the multi-minute version from the actual episode. Ultimately, the whole thing is a bit silly, but it's in good fun and honestly, when the John Williams score kicks in and the lightsabers come out, it's hard not to feel a tiny bit of the giddy nostalgia that's helped to keep Star Wars the powerhouse franchise it's been for close to four decades.

Personally, this video has me thinking of host of similar mash-ups I'd love to see. The Phantom Menace starring Tyrion and Bronn in place of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon could be perhaps the greatest movie experience ever devised. Likewise, think of the money that Disney and HBO could make if they were to partner up and produce a version of Return of the Jedi in which Darth Vader chucks Joffrey into the Death Star's core instead of the Emperor. People might have gotten uppity about the whole "Greedo shooting first" thing from the special editions, but I have a feeling that the inclusion of Joffrey-murder is a change even the most hardcore purists could embrace.

There wasn't all that much nudity in the current season... I think... except for few brothel shots they seem to be toning it down (and thx for that too).

Am I the only one who finds this visual upgrade really 'meh'?

Just talking? No pleasing some people. Really don't know what you expect. There are few 'battles' in the books so don't know what you're looking for and the magic/dragons doesn't come into play until the last few books.

Just talking? No pleasing some people. Really don't know what you expect. There are few 'battles' in the books so don't know what you're looking for and the magic/dragons doesn't come into play until the last few books.

I expect to not be bored out of my mind. It's just an hour of talking then tits and nothing else. Yet it's shown as this epic medieval series. I just want to scream "For the love of God, do something besides talking or removing your clothes."

Well then let me save you the trouble, from here until maybe season 4-5 you're going to continue to see a lot of talking. They already stray from the books by changing dialogue and subplots, but I'm glad they're not catering and making it some hack and slash action fantasy series. The politics and realism is the meat of the story.

That seems to be how it's advertised. All the commercials show it as that yet when I saw it, none of what I saw happened.

As opposed to what? Fight scenes because talking is boring?

Don't ever watch Star Trek.

I was from my cable provider, it showed catapults being used and people attacking with their mounts.

Now compare with the Vader/Obi from A New Hope.
The current tools we have at our disposal make for more well-crafted, dynamic entries to a lot of facets of Film and TV, most especially in fight scenes. Please take your mindless hate of the prequels someplace else.

That was indeed a flawlessly choreographed scene of guys quickly hitting eachother with sticks. Never missing a mark, always right on cue. That doesn't make it a good fight scene however.

Um, ok? I don't really understand that as a response on a number of levels. You specifically mentioned Lightsaber Fight. You do realise Jedi use a level of precognition as well as generally super-advanced reflexes to aid them in battle yeah? The fact that they don't miss a mark is kind of the point; it's three exceptionally well trained, bordering superhuman, fighters duelling in near even ability, all trying to gain an upper hand - hence the array of shots of the characters thinking and responding and planing and waiting.
Not to mention, the level of perfection is also used to highlight Obi-Wan's padawan-hood when he breaks the perfection and mucks up. He hits into Qui-Gon's blade a few times, gets thrown off the walkway, and is left behind with the ray-shields.
So for the most part, the mechanic, on the beat approach to the fighting is entirely intentional. It's a great scene as it manages to engage character and narrative without foregoing spectacle. Also its edited to the beats of the music which is like pure awesome injected to the brain when done right.

What do you consider a good fight? Especially lightsaber based? Honestly to me, as much as the original series is fantastic on so many levels, the lightsaber duels are so exceptionally un-dynamic, due to technical limitations and general lack of ability to render the scope of the powers at work in the fights, that I feel they are the weakest aspect of the trilogy at best, and near pointless at worst. It also is generally either severely untrained Luke vs. extremely crippled Vader, or Vader vs very old Obi, which in general don't make for particularly dynamic or visually engaging fights without taking into account limitations of the times. Slow-build/slow paced fights may build suspense but they more than often do nothing with it.
I'm going to take amazingly crafted prequel battles that are a joy to watch over samey, people standing around vaguely glancing blows, taunting eachother stuff from the Originals any day.
Honestly the only fight I can think of that is even moderately interesting is when Luke loses it at Vader at the end of 'Jedi, and he just starts advancing forward and hacking, while the camera pans along with them and there is a stupidly good amount of emotion conveyed.

But yeah, I really feel people tend to be 'pft Advanced visual effects?? They don't make them the way they did before, when they had to be inventive' as a default argument, when in reality things are a thousand times more interesting and reflect the original intent of the director/creative mind, but people are so stuck up there own asses and nostalgia-riddled that they miss the point.
