Saddle Up in the Latest Minecraft Update

Minecraft players can finally know the meaning of haste.

The latest snapshot update to Minecraft is here, and as usual, it brings with it a bundle of block-shaped gifts. First and foremost among them is the addition of horses, as teased by head developer Jens Bergensten [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123100-Minecraft-Sells-10-Million-Copies-Teases-Horses-in-Update] a while ago. Mojang wasn't afraid to give credit where it was due, either, acknowledging the fact that the official horses were inspired by the implementation of horses in DrZhark's popular Mo' Creatures mod. Horses are just one part of the animal-friendly update, with new leashes allowing you to tame other animals as pets, and wool carpets to ... alright, the animal theme kind of ends there, but the carpets are cool too.

Horses can be found in the wild, but you won't just be able to hop up onto any stallion you see. Once you climb on, it'll do its best to buck you right back off again. Persist for a while, and eventually you'll earn its respect. At that point you can saddle your new mount and ride into the sunset (time of day allowing). You can even equip your trusty steed with horse armor at no additional cost!

Leashes will be a handy addition for those interested in befriending the blocky animals of the wild. By leashing any non-hostile mob, you can lead them around at will (yes, even squid). You can also tie your new slaves friends to fence posts to make sure they don't wander into any roaming creepers. You can never be too safe.

On the less visible side of things, some serious changes are coming to Minecraft's technical infrastructure. The game is upgrading from Java 5 to Java 6, and although that's just a different number to most people, it means a colossal overhaul to the game's core technologies. It also bumps up its minimum required version of OpenGL from 1.2 to 2.0. The end result of this is that you may not be able to handle Minecraft if your computer is a decade or two old, but for the rest of us it'll mean a noticeable boost to performance.

The new snapshot is available to check out right now, but it'll be a while before these updates make their way to the active build of the game - the new program architecture could lead to a good number of bugs that are best caught before the masses make the jump. You can grab the new launcher from Mojang's website here [http://mojang.com/2013/04/minecraft-snapshot-13w16a-and-new-launcher/] if you're eager to saddle up.

No doubt that there's already pony skins for this within the ten minutes it's been available...

And what's this about carpets?!?! :D

Hey, it's a small step, but at least it's a step in the right direction. Now all we need is paint...

I used to wonder what Minecraft could be...

I must say I'm more eager for the Java upgrade than anything else...unless the leashes can be made to work with hostile mobs. Pet Zombie anyone?

Fiddling with OpenGL might cause problems for the Radeon folks. The Catalyst drivers have a history of really poor OpenGL support in the past, but maybe they're better at it now?

That horse looks a little bit complex for a Minecraft animal. I mean, just look at its legs! There are THREE CUBES per leg!
Next thing you know, they're gonna call it MineCrysis.

So is that why my computer started running Minecraft badly? Since I guess I started noticing after I got my 5770...

pfft. Why ride a pony when you can be one? Already quite a few mlp character mods out heh. But yeah, I assume there are probably mlp skins for our new blocky equine friend. Looking forward to the new update.

Possibly.

My experience with this comes from another java based game called Wurmonline (originally co-developed by Notch as well, funnily enough). Some years back I used a Radeon card and suddenly experienced lots of weird graphical glitches such as lights shining through terrain, weird lag, cursor selecting stuff in the background instead of foreground, etc. I found out I wasn't the only one with these troubles through their support forum. Apparantly it was a widespread issue among ATI owners due to the nearly non-existant support for OpenGL from Catalyst. During this time Catalyst released several new drivers, and while some problems lessened, others never went away. Occasionally, rolling back to older drivers worked. You could try that.
My next computer had a Nvidia card and every single one of the graphical and performance issues with the game went away in an instant.
I never looked back.

Arguably this was quite some time ago, even before I started playing Minecraft, so I always figured they'd sorted these problems by now, especially considering minecrafts popularity and the emergence of Java as a "major" game development platform. I had glitches in other games as well (no lag issues, tho), most notably Civilization 4 where the animated civ leaders were distorted, but this, too, went away when I started using Nvidia again.

I hear the ATI cards these days are very powerful and compatibility problems are rare, but for me these memories kinda stuck :)

The new leash just made the cats a much more effective anti-creeper device

& it's probably a good idea for the saddle to be used for more than one silly achievement

Is it weird that my first thought was "I wonder if you can kill it and eat its meat"?

In a way, this reminds me of Red Dead Redemption where you had to pass a test, so to speak, before the horse was officially yours. I like that back then so I like this right now!

I've never had issues running freespace 2 SCP which uses open GL. As for minecraft, my 6950 works perfectly.
