Neverwinter Enters Open Beta Next Week

Neverwinter is an upcoming MMORPG based on Dungeons & Dragons, that you'll be able to play as early as next Thursday.

If you're reading this text, I feel pretty comfortable in assuming you've got, at the very least, a passing familiarity with Dungeons & Dragons. It's the world's most popular pen and paper roleplaying game, and is something of a common ground for geeks of all stripes. Further, I'd like to assume that you're familiar with Neverwinter Nights, the PC roleplaying game created by BioWare that served as a follow up to the Baldur's Gate series. I only mention that game to note that the Neverwinter discussed in this article only shares its title with that game; beyond that it's a completely unrelated MMORPG developed by Cryptic Studios (they of City of Heroes fame).

Now, with that established, Neverwinter looks very interesting, if only due to its Dungeons & Dragons lineage. That alone should sell the title to many players, and in even better news, those whose interest is piqued by the mere mention of D&D will be happy to hear that Cryptic and publisher Perfect World Entertainment have announced that Neverwinter will enter open beta very, very soon.

From the official site:

Neverwinter - Open Beta Starting Times

If you are a Hero of the North, you will be able to play Neverwinter starting April 25, 2013 at 9 A.M. PDT

If you are a Guardian of Neverwinter, you will be able to play Neverwinter starting April 27, 2013 at 9 A.M. PDT

Non-Founders will be able to enjoy Neverwinter's Open Beta on April 30, 2013 at 9 A.M. PDT

Hero of the North? Guardian of Neverwinter? What's that mean, you suddenly find yourself wondering. In short, these are incentive offers for those willing to shell out extra cash for Neverwinter. Once it debuts, the game is slated follow the increasingly popular free-to-play business model, but as with most MMOs along those lines, if you opt to send Perfect World a bit of extra cash, you'll be granted a handful of bonus items and benefits within the game. The full run-down can be found on the game's Founder's Pack page [http://nw.perfectworld.com/founderspack], but keep in mind that purchasing any of these packs is completely optional. If you're willing to wait until April 30 to try the open beta, you won't need to spend any cash at all.

Beyond that, the only thing you really need to figure out is whether or not your PC can run the game at an acceptable level. Cryptic offers a list of Neverwinter's official system requirements [http://nw.perfectworld.com/about/faq#requirements], though for the absolute best performance it's generally wise to double whatever the company claims as a game's recommended specs. Neverwinter should run on anything above the minimum, but as long-time PC gamers will attest, meeting the minimum requirements rarely guarantees an enjoyable gaming experience.

Albeit the fact that the game has really nothing to do with the gameplay mechanics of D&D (which in turn would probably be unpopular with the majority of people used to MMOs like WoW), it's still an awesome game according to most people who were in the closed beta. Also, the fact that the game still has the lore from Forgotten Realms is a bonus for people who already have an interest in D&D.

Chances are I'll be playing this for a while.

Is RA Salvatore involved at all? You know, the guy who basically wrote (But not created) Forgotten Realms?

There's a whole bunch of folks who would like to have a word with you [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Forgotten_Realms_novels]. RA Salvatore has written a lot, and his writings have been popular & visible, but not enough to claim a statistically large slice of the pie.

Then there's all the folks that wrote FR supplements for D&D over the years, which are the foundation for the novels. (I could not quickly find a wiki-like list for the supplements)

OK... so... when is the actual official release then? Because this sounds like an official release that isn't...

Drow: Crazy mofo chicks who kidnap males from other cities to use as sex toys, before invading surface cities from the place that may be called Hell On Earth.

They are the biggest badasses.

To me they're just stupid elves who are black. And great, cliche races so every Drow is a female rapist? Oh yes, wonderful, that's exactly what I want in a game, auto selected alignment and locked raced classes. P.S, that was a joke, but I still think Drows are just black elves, why can't we get something more beast like and unique! Humans are boring, lets add some differentiation in there. Precisely why I play Guild wars 2, at least it's beautiful, fun, engaging, replayable, enjoyable, unique, different, interesting, orgasmic, you get the picture.

Combat is entertaining.
Art is spectacular.
Races are rich with content.
And the quests are great.

Why would I want to play neverwinter when I can just play a better MMO game that won't waste my time?

Because Neverwinter is free. And there are male Drow. Male GOOD drow. He might be a bit famous, actually.

Oh give over, if you can't afford 45 pounds you clearly don't want to ENJOY a game. If you buy games regularly then a 45 price tag shouldn't be a bother. I'm still in my A-levels but you don't see me complaining about cost.

While the DROW may look good, they're clearly just black elves with a different background, if you do that for elves, then why not humans? oh right, because it's padding.

Have your drows, I don't mind, it's just I can't see the waste of a race on just "oh it's another elf, lol" Only reason I could bare the elder scrolls was because at least they had SOMETHING amoung the 4 different elves and 4 different humans with the two beastial races.

Yes and no. They were a splinter group that were forced underground by the Farie (Feywild) after the Drow started a war. Long story.

First thought: Oooh, another D&D MMO!

Second thought: Oh... It's Forgotten Realms. Again.

Third thought: Fourth Edition!?!? I will not go near this MMO. 4E felt enough like a video game without it being turned into a video game.

Isn't that kind of specifically the advantage of using 4e? Not having to create some horrible monstrosity out of the core mechanics to get 3.X to work as an MMORPG?
