Man Jailed For Viewing "Pixie And Troll" Porn

A reformed sexual predator has been jailed for viewing, you guessed it, hentai.

A court in New Zealand has convicted rehabilitated sexual predator, Ronald Clark, of possessing "objectionable material," and has sentenced him to three months in jail. The objectionable material in this case? Cartoon pornography featuring what Clark's lawyer describes as "pixies and trolls."

The "elves and pixies" depicted in the pornography (or "hentai" if you prefer the Japanese term) apparently look young enough to draw the ire of the courts and anti-child pornography group ECPAT. Yep, it's the whole "lolis are people" argument all over again.

ECPAT Child Alert director, Alan Bell, conceded that no children were harmed in the production of the films and manga, but went on to argue that they encourage potential pedophiles to "to migrate from there to the real thing."

"The distribution of it is damaging," he continued. "You have to ask what impact does it have even if it's not harming [an individual child]."

Bell went on to describe hentai depicting underage characters as a "huge" problem in Japan.

Clark, who was previously convicted for indecently assaulting a teenage boy, argued that he viewed the content for its artistic merit and that he didn't find it sexually arousing. For those of you who don't know your yuri from your shonen ai, that statement isn't quite as ludicrous as it sounds. The line between pornography and art is a particularly fine one in the anime and manga industry. Numerous major artists began their careers with erotic doujinshi (self-published work) and some, like Ghost in the Shell and Dominion Tank Police creator, Masamune Shirow, are arguably known more for their T&A work than their ground-breaking fiction. Clark argues that the conviction is ludicrous, and that he could, in theory, be convicted of possessing objectionable pictures of stick figures.

New Zealand isn't the only country struggling with the idea of cartoon pornography. Last year, Swedish manga translator, Simon Lundström, had his 2010 conviction for possessing child pornography overturned [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117938-Swedish-Courts-Imaginary-Children-Arent-Real] when he successfully arguing that prosecuting him for possessing cartoon depictions of child abuse would violate his freedom of expression.

"The criminalization of possession of the drawings would otherwise exceed what is necessary with regard to the purpose which has led to the restriction on freedom of expression and freedom of information," read a statement from the court.

A huge problem in Japan, where they have some of the lowest incidences of violent crime and sexual crime against children in the developed world.

Fuck off Bell.

The conviction is based on groundless pseudo-intellectual postulation, and the exacerbation of the "eww" factor by public hysteria. Certainly nothing more.

Fate placed that hyphen well.

Because child porn leads to child rape just like adult porn leads to adult rape, right?

"The distribution of it is damaging," he continued. "You have to ask what impact does it have even if it's not harming [an individual child]."
Okay. What impact does it have? You got facts?

Yeah, bigger than the suicide rate, the abysmal birth rate with no immigration to offset it, the continuing cleanup from the last earthquake and the shift away from nuclear power, the recent government change, the arguments with South Korea over the Liancourt Rocks and the EVERYTHING with North Korea... yeah, they'll get right on some tasteless drawings.

I knew that thread was going places, but I never expected it'd get the Grey treatment. To be honest I am a bit disappointed at how few jabs you took :(

As I've said before on this site: You can't jail someone for watching porn, it doesn't hurt anybody. Where is the justice in this?

Hey guys, let's put a recovering pedophile back in jail for trying to outlet his desires in a harmless way for children and in a healthy way for himself.

Seriously.
Not advocating for pedophilia here, but i don't think i ever saw a convincing study that proves watching Lolicon Hentai makes a person more likely to rape little girls. There's just no proof.

Once again, people with their heads stuck too far up their own arse telling other people what kind of art hey should and should not be viewing. And honestly, big thumbs up to you, Grey, for not going into this and not taking the easy way out by just blowing this off as a pedo watching child porn.

I'm not a particularly big fan of loli by any stretch but it is not a "huge problem" in Japan and it doesn't "encourage" anybody to do any of those things to real children. That was just Ishihara's stuck up campaign against manga and doujin that made it out to be like that. But apparently his novels depicting child rape were totally okay. The same double standard applies in the west, it appears.

I'm glad you understand this and that you pointed it out. Remember everybody that has read Yotsuba&!, Pretty Neighbour is canon.

*Starts reading article*
me: "I'm just so glad this would never happen over here"
*reads about Simon Lundströms case*
Me: "Oh, right... that.."

Bring on the thought police! Because nothing inspires confidence in the citizenry more than randomly jailing people for watching drawings.

Well considering this is the internet >.> ........... <.< pretty sure we are all in agreement about how we feel on this one.

OT: I vote to move the discussion onto "Should swords be treated the same as gun laws?" I mean really, we don't hear enough people saying "swords don't kill people, people kill people....with swords," enough lately now do we?

This is absolutely moronic and sets a dangerous civil rights abusing precedent. If someone isn't living out said questionable fantasy then let them fantasize all they want. Why should they give a shit? Or would they prefer he be out on the street stalking down little girls for the real thing? The morality police need to remove their heads from their asses or one day they'll be coming after us for having naughty dreams.

Can we get some studies done with convicted pedophiles? Ask them if they like cartoon porn with drawn kids. I would be interested in facts here. If you get an overwhelming majority that said yes, and that that they started with it before moving on to the real thing, then go ahead and outlaw all you want. But until you can prove this. SHUT THE FUCK UP WITH YOUR COMPLAINTS(child advocacy groups, law enforcement) SO tired of people complaining without evidence. This goes for everything from this stuff to violence from video games, among other issues.

Is The Simpsons illegal in New Zealand? Lots of child abuse in that show what with Homer frequently choking Bart, which must lead to hundreds of thousands of child abuse cases across the globe. It's also much more widespread and the USA has a huge problem with yellow fictional people fictionally throttling their fictional kids fictionally in fiction. Because fiction is fact.

Im going to play the devils advocate and point out that you could say the exact same thing about actual child porn. The same goes for any kind of porn really.

It still does not change anything about this case though. Its not about wether or not watching Lolicon Hentai makes a person more likely to rape little girls. Its about a sex offender looking at pictures/video of drawn naked children. You are trying to distort the facts and change what the core issue here is.

Yeah, I agree with that.

Viewing the icky Japanese cartoon porn was presented as if it was child-pornography of actual children. Disgraceful for the law to be bent in this fashion and for people to be locked up for downloading and viewing hentai.

The devil needs a better advocate. In order to make actual child porn you actually need to make a child have sex with someone. And you're right: this isn't about whether art might encourage a person to act(because inspiration isn't a crime, only illegally acting on that inspiration). It's about whether owning a pencil sketch is illegal or not.

Its actually not about whether owning a pencil sketch is illegal or not because in most civilized countries child porn drawn or real is illegal. There is no questions here its straight up fact. You can go look it up if you dont believe me.
