Original Sonic to Get "3D Classics"-Style Remake On 3DS

3D Sonic the Hedgehog comes out in Japan as an eShop download on May 15 for 600 yen ($6).

The 3D Classics series of downloadable games for the Nintendo 3DS are pretty much exactly what they sound like: classic games from Nintendo's back catalog "remastered" in 3D. Early adopters of the system may have received 3D Classics: Excitabike for free [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109566-Free-3D-NES-Classic-Coming-to-3DS-Owners-With-eShop-Update], and since then, Kirby's Adventure, Kid Icarus, TwinBee, Urban Champion and Xevious have been added to the 3D Classics lineup. These games have been pretty hit and miss, and with the exceptions of Kirby's Adventure and Kid Icarus they are all games only the most oldest of school care (or know) about. That's set to change, with a 3D remake of the original Sonic The Hedgehog due out for the system later this month.

The bad news is that only the Japanese release date and price (May 15 for 600 yen, which is about $6 US) has been revealed for now, but as Sonic is such a huge character worldwide, it probably won't be long before this game sees an English release.

3D Sonic the Hedgehog is pretty much a straight port of the original game, with just a few extra tweaks. You can spin dash just like in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and save states have been added. If you want to play without the tweaks, there's an option to turn spin dashes off and remap the buttons to the Genesis layout.

If that's not old school enough for you, players can switch between the Japanese release and International version to see the minor differences between the two versions. You can even choose the sound emulation based on the Sega Genesis or the Sega Genesis model 2.

Still not enough? Well, Sega have included an "Faux CRT" option to play the game with a warped screen that looks like you are playing on a 90's style CRT screen (wood paneling not included). You can set the 3D graphics to depth or zoom, and you can of course turn them off completely if you want the full old school experience.

Might actually get me to shell out for a Nintendo eShop cash card or whatever their version of the MS Points card is to get this once it comes out in the US.

You know I got like ...6 copies of this game and a 3D option is just the lamest way to try and pull someone in, it's almost as lazy as the "HD Filters", you know the filter options you've seen in emulators for the past 6 years?

This sounds awesome. All those extra settings are such a good idea. Get the game exactly how you want it. Even to the point of being as close to the original as possible.

Spin dash in my Sonic The Hedgehog 1?

Joking aside, this sounds relatively neat, although I don't think I'll pick it up. I own it in enough forms already =P

They've already done this with Super Hang-On in December and Space Harrier in March. Neither one has left Japan, yet, and there's no indication that this one will either (even though it's the obvious move). I want it, but I'm very cautiously optimistic.

P.S. Thanks

P.P.S. They're also bringing the game to android, with similar updates and the same developer as 2011's Sonic CD port. I'm seriously hoping this version gets released on other consoles the way SCD did, because it'll be far and away the best.

Sometimes I like to try and remember how many times I already bought this game. Today is not one of this times, so, suffice to say I still own my original Mega Drive cartridge (or have I got two of those?) AND I have it on the 6-PAK collection cartridge (also for Mega Drive).

Still ... This seems like a "definitive version", man! It is not just the 3D or filters... They seem to have compiled EVERYTHING POSSIBLE in this edition, like tiny differences in versions and even put in an optional spin dash (I don't know when was the last time that you played the original Sonic, but I found it surprisingly difficult last time I had a go at it).

I really don't think it is just a cash grab like "now with trophies!", instead it feels to me like an "definitive version". So, to me, I think it is worth to shell out some cash. But, hey, to each his own!

*Shrugs*

Never played a Sonic game. Never got involved with the Sonic vs Mario crap either.
I might pick it up eventually.

I've probably played through it 3 times in the last month, I've played official versions already with the spindash, there's a few of them you'd be surprised, the game wasn't made for it so it'll seem fine at first (the early levels) but it's not something you use often, especially since it's the Sonic CD spindash where it takes a second to 'warm up'.
I feel the jap version is the definitive version with extra effects and no spike bug, but indeed whatever floats your boat.
