Gran Turismo 6 Hits PS3 This Holiday Season

This morning Sony announced Gran Turismo 6, the latest entry in the company's hallowed racing simulation franchise.

Lucky for us, this was one of those reveals with actual substance, as opposed to a minor tease of what we might be able to expect. So, sit back and bask in the surprisingly candid infodump Sony dropped a mere few hours ago.

Key things we know: Gran Turismo 6 is a PlayStation 3 title, despite the imminent arrival of the PlayStation 4. According to Sony (and assuming all goes to plan), the game should see its retail debut in time for the hyper-lucrative holiday shopping season. Gran Turismo 6 uses an all-new gameplay/graphics engine, which Sony claims will make the game more receptive to downloadable content additions, which is great, but those of you who hate DLC will be happy to hear that the base game will supposedly feature 71 tracks and over 1,200 cars (a quarter of which will almost definitely be various Skyline models).

Big numbers are impressive, but this seems a good time to recall the debacle that was Gran Turismo 5. At launch the game was quite clearly unfinished, and while it was a viable racing simulator, it wasn't the sort of thing you could really recommend to a hardcore fan until Sony released the massive 2.0 patch months after the game's debut. As a fan of racing games, I want everything Sony has promised to be true, but once bitten, twice shy.

If you remain piqued despite that realistic pessism, I invite to watch the trailer above. Sony issued that vignette alongside this morning's announcement, and it's pretty much what you'd expect: Car porn and lots of it.

Expect more on Gran Turismo 6 to emerge in the near future.

Wait, so they're releasing at the same time as DriveClub on the PS4, that other driving simulator that the guy during the PS4 reveal got really "enthusiastic" about.

Doesn't seem like the wisest idea to try and take sales away from yourself.

Warning, video contains NSFW car porn. Please secure pants before viewing.

On topic now, those cars look gorgeous. Hope this one is better because Forza is getting old and I want some old school Gran Turismo, only disappointment is there is still no news about a Vita Gran Turismo.

I want the same thing from this one as I wanted from Gran Turismo 5 that Gran Turismo 5 did not have.

Damage modeling.

The one thing that's pushed me out of racing games time and time again is my super-car's ability to bounce off a cement wall at 200+ miles per hour without a scratch.

I honestly thought this was going to be a launch title for the PS4. That would have made a lot more sense, Gran Turismo really is a 'killer app' for a lot of people and I guarantee plenty of people would have bought the console just for this game.

Oh well, I guess Sony is happy to be in direct competition with themselves and make less money than they otherwise would have.

GT6 better have better modelling for the tracks. I might be screaming by at 200kmph but when I see 2-poly trees I drop the controller and facepalm. Those graphic tricks should not be anywhere in a current gen title. They're cheap and unnecessary.

Why the fuck isn't this a PS4 launch title?
It looks like it will be, Polyphony Digital have said Gran Turismo 6 has been designed to be upgraded for a PS4 version as well. They said it would be next year though, I would speculate they do not want to go head to head with the launch title Drive Club. Sony probably want to milk as much as they can from the twilight PS3 release of GT 6 and get Drive Club out, then after the initial launch get the PS4 version of Gran Turismo out to help avoid that post launch limbo you sometimes get with a new console.

Here is one the articles about the PS4 version of Gran Turismo, http://www.videogamer.com/ps3/gran_turismo_6/news/gran_turismo_6_is_coming_to_ps4_too_yamauchi_suggests_2.html

I have been ranting about this exact thing for months now. How can someone (someTHING, I guess) be so dumb?
It is competing with itself and driving away valuable resources to promote the COMPLETELY USELESS PS4.
For the millionth time: I am an avid consumer. I own pretty much everything Playstation released on the market.
I have no interest in buying a PS4 for the forseeable future.
Who are they gonna sell it to?

Rant's over. Now for a joke!

Me: "Hey, Sony, how about a Gran Turismo Vita?"
Sony: "That depends. What's a Vita?"

The funniest part is that the joke is on me.

This is the right game at the right time on the wrong hardware.

Does anyone remember how badly GT5 runs on a PS3 at 1080p. You can hear the thing creaking every time you go round a sharp corner on a track with a busy background, as the framerate crashes along with lots of screen-tearing.

Ok, so Polyphony have had a while to optimise the code, but the simple fact is the old PS3 just isn't up to running a racing game that looks much better than GT5, which of course GT6 should be aiming for.

They've already got Driveclub as a PS4 launch title, so I think they should have taken their time and made a proper PS4-native version of GT5, even if it means knocking it back several months, or a year.

Well, at least they seem to have a plan.
Even though, I can help but disagree and thing it is a BAD plan.

Drive Club is a game...
Gran Turismo is a brand, a system seller, and the biggest thing in Sony's portfolio.

I know people that bought a PS3 just for Gran Turismo 5 (wich is arguably the weakest on the series).

Releasing it late on the PS4 doesn't account for nothing.
Sony, for chrissakes, clean your ears well: PEOPLE. WON'T. BUY. A. NEW. SYSTEM. TO. PLAY. PORTS!!!!!!

Can be the best port of the whole planet, if they can play on what they have, they will not buy new hardware.
It has been true for every videogame system in history.

Please, Sony, I love you. I don't wanna lose you like I did SEGA. (whiping out the tears) STOP BEING STUPID!

A truer word was not spoken. That's what puts me off the GT series, too focused on Japanese cars; which is ok if you're into that sort of thing but I'm not. Forza seems to have a more even spread, even if it is a little lacking in the Australian car department.

They have said the PS4 version of GT6 is being delayed so that it doesn't compete with Driveclub. So looks like your getting your wish :)
