Sega's New Mystery Domain May Reveal Next Sonic Title

Anybody have any thoughts on what exactly "Sonic: Lost World" might be? Sega's being coy again.

Sega's been busy this week. Over the past few days, the House That Alex Kidd Built (Then Was Summarily Forgotten By) registered two new internet domains. Specifically, it was Sega of Europe, and the two website addresses the firm locked down are "soniclostworld.com" and "soniclostworlds.com".

Curious, no? To date Sega has yet to mention any game titled anything even remotely similar to Sonic: Lost World. That said, it's about time for the publisher to roll out a new Sonic the Hedgehog sequel, so it would come as little surprise to see Sega announce this Sonic: Lost World game in the near future.

Now that we've established this to most likely be an upcoming, as-yet-unrevealed game, the big question now remaining is what exactly Sonic: Lost World might entail. Joystiq already swiped the obvious "Sonic versus dinosaurs" concept, so instead I'm going to posit the idea that Sonic: Lost World is a point-and-click adventure game where Sonic is tasked with literally finding pieces of a world, within some other, largely unrelated world. Granted, that's an idiotic premise, but compared to that time they gave the black hedgehog a bunch of guns and a kindergartener's concept of "badass attitude," does it really sound so far-fetched?

We expect Sega to obliterate this dumb suggestion shortly. Now that the hedgehog is out of the bag, the company will likely want to properly explain what Sonic: Lost World might be, and why its prospective customers should care. Stay tuned, same hedgehog time, same hedgehog website.

Please let it be by the same people who did Colors and Generations as those games were good.
What can I say, I grew up with Sega. Master System for life! :D

Have you ever played Sonic: Unleashed? Because that is, word for word, what Sonic Unleashed is... minus the bootleg ripoff god of war levels in-between.

I really hope so too. Seeing as how Generations had no plot to speak of, if they were to just hit the same quality of gameplay, its sequel would have nowhere to go but up.

About Generations 2?! I want more levels revisited!

Damn, SEGA, what is it with you and DLC?!
We always complain about DLC, how it is a ripoff, how the game is left unfinished and so on ...

Still, both Sonic Generations and All Stars Racing Transformed (impressively good) were games that were left BEGGING for DLC. The GOOD kind.

Who wouldn't have paid for an Sonic 1's Starlight Zone DLC? Sonic 3's Hydrocity? S&K's Sandopolis? Sonic 2's ANY-GODDAMN-THING?
Windy Valley (Adventure 1), Casino Park (Heroes). Tidal Tempest (sonic CD)!!! Give me TIDAL TEMPEST!

Nope, no DLC.

For Racing Transformed, they even made an internet poll about which characters the fans would like to see... Nothing about DLC getting released, and the timing is getting way off...

Oh and about Alex Kidd ... DON'T GET ME STARTED about Alex Kidd. If I were a billionaire I would buy the IP, assemble a talented team and release a new Alex Kidd game in the same style as Super Mario 3D Land...
FOR FREE!!! (well, since it is impossible anyway, might as well make it free on my dreams! LOL)

Maybe a bit more of the colours than the generations, gens was nice but it was also less well designed than colours, with a lot of frankly insane timing needed for some alternate paths to be reached. Not to mention how hard it is to actually fail in generations compared to colours.

None the less, as a dedicated Sega fanbitch I am excited for the prospect of a new Sonic game, especially as I just got done with the Unleashed mod for generations and found myself thirsty for more.

Edit: I'd also definately like to see a plot more in line with colours, much more light and fun, reminded me of the old cartoons, or even follow the old UK Sonic The Comic a bit, that comic had some great storylines going for it, not to mention some awesaome characters and the BEST Chaotix Crew iteration evar.

Baseless speculation ahoy! "Lost World" refers to the 2D half of Sonic Generations - lost for so long in the Dark Years of awful 3D gameplay and horrendous storytelling. But now Sega's finally woken up and is amputating the tumorous 3D half of Generations in order to make its upcoming Sonic games entirely in glorious 2D.

Hey, we can dream...

No I'm sorry but right there you missed out some friggin ICE CAP ZONE! and JUNGLE ZONE! God damn the DLC potential of Sonic Generations was insane but they just failed to capitalise on it, I think it's because the shit DLC for Unleashed and 06 did so badly, but all they are is slightly harder mission levels.

I do agree with Racing Transformed being damned impressive. Gave it likea 9.something out of ten, minus .5 if you aren't a squeeing fanboy.

And if it is, who gives a single fuck? Seriously, watching Sonic games come out is like watching a dying plague victim cough up blood. The final discharges of something that probably already wishes it was dead.

I used to be one of those Die hard Sonic fans, always waiting for the next game hoping it would be the "one" and Colors and Generations have helped the series out, I'm still tired of the hype cycle. I'll just wait to actually see it at E3 or it's reviews on launch to get it. If it's a Wii U exclusive I'm out of luck. And if it's for the next generation Ps4/Xboxwhatever... Please sega, learn from 06 and don't try to push it out the door as fast as you can.

The 3D half of generations was good though? A far cry from the cancers of SA2 (yes I fucking went there, go play it again, it's the worst in the series except MAYBE Sonic 06, your flames can't harm me general populous! (not you godzillaguy92)) and Sonic 06. Even Unleashed I can say yeah the 3D stuff was hit and miss, very much reliant on knowing the stage in advance....

I think Colours is the best 3D form of Sonic I've played thus far by a large margin. Because the 3D had your super fast bits, with lots of dodging obstacles and enemies, but it also had nice slow rhythmic platformers. But then I'm one of those who thought Unleashed was criticised too harshly, I mean Play magazine rates Unleashed as worse thasn 06, and the worst bit of Unleashed are: it's fairly hard and you'll die a lot unless you have great reaction speeds or know the stages, and the werehog levels are too god damn repetitive.

A Wii U exclusive is fine by me if it's not in the Storybook vein of things, Black Knight is okay (great OST and it's playable, just too waggley). I really hope for the kind of high quality and balance of nostalgia and genius that was Colours....

Reminded myself: Sega! Stop. Hiring. Cash Cash. NOW . I like the themes of Colours and Unleashed asa much as anyone, but I really want you to stop with the Bowling FOr Soup-esque punk-pop crap that plagues the OST's of late and go back and look at the frankly brilliant OST's of Heroes and SA1, not to mention the brilliant 16-bit era soundtracks and the orchestral score from Unleashed.

Edit: From what I've read 06 wasn't really pushed out the door so mucha s it proved insurmountable at the time, they tried some insane lighting stuff for the time and wasted like a whole year developing that lighting that they just couldn't get to run proplerly and as a result he product just couldn't be finished properly. It's still a terrible game though, it is however so bad it's good.

I remember helping organizing that... I regret a few things, but going to fanbases to help clear things up was pretty one-in-a lifetime stuff. I even got asked a few times if I worked for SEGA/Sumo Digital(the devs).

OT: Lost World doesn't sound like a "main series" title; probably a spin off or something. What about Sonic: Uncharted? Or Sonic: Tomb Raider? XD

My prediction is that the lost world in question will be the "world" that existed from the early to mid-90s where the Sonic games were actually really good and were yet to be bogged down by gimmicks and too many supporting characters. I hope.

Well it's more Sonic so as an admitted Sonic fanboy, I'm automatically interested in it.

Hurry up and tell me more, Sega!

Can we get some decent gameplay that doesn't involve lame gimmick mechanics, a good story and some bearable voice acting?(Seriously SEGA, get some goddam decent VA people in the booths.)

That would be a nice change in the stream of fecal matter that this franchise has chundered out lately.

Well this has my undivided attention for the time being in the hopes we might get another great game like generations and the daytime levels from Unleashed.

My question is this - How did the original story get "tiring"? Dr. Robotnik wants to build an amusement park, so he's captured and enslaved the animals of Angel Island (or whatever location) and make them work in his machinations, and Sonic has to put an end to the oppression and Robotnik's plans. Maybe he got carried away when he built that air fleet and (rebuilt) the Death Egg, and the wanted to harness the power of the Master Emerald, but still, what was wrong with the original premise?
