Halo 4 Patch Alters The Game's Arsenal

Developer 343 Industries has released an update for Halo 4 that tweaks and rebalances the game's collection of human and alien weaponry.

Available now, the "Weapon Tuning Update," does exactly what its title suggests: It alters the behavior of the guns found in Halo 4. "How?" you might ask. Normally this is where I'd copy/paste a long list of relatively minor tweaks that add up to a slightly different gameplay experience, but with Halo being Halo, Microsoft's fat coffers are still hanging around to ensure that every aspect of the game is well-funded. Thus, at top-right, you'll find a video walking players through the changes found in this patch.

Given how many months its been since Halo 4 first debuted, it may be surprising to some of you to see the game's weapons being rebalanced to this degree, but the goal of the update, according to 343 Industries, is to make the game's online component more balanced, and to "improve the feel of Halo 4 matchmaking." To that end 343 invited a number of Halo 4 community members to their studio to check out the alterations prior to their being introduced to the public. According to said community members, the weapons update is a big improvement.

Whether you believe them or not (or, for that matter, if any of what they've said is true) is currently a point of personal opinion. Realistically we won't know how well this patch fares until its been available to the general population for at least a few weeks. In the meantime, you may as well pick up the patch as it is free and you'll likely need the thing if you hope to play Halo 4 online.

I still need to get on and test it. Seems pretty good, although some more changes would be nice. :)

A bit fucking late isn't it? They should really have balanced these things from the start.

Looking at the list of changes, giving more power to the vehicles seem redundant when they're not even addressing the Gauss turret.

I like the idea of the AR and Carbine being more powerful. However, I'd hoped that they were going to dial back the scattershot and SAW a bit. Also, 35% damage increase on vehicles that were already insanely OP? The fuck are they thinking?!

Have they got the Theatre working on Campaign yet? Or an offline, single player version of Spartan Ops?

If not, I'm probably not going to bother loading the game up again...

Unlucky I fell out of FPS games literally a week after Halo 4 came out so I have no idea. I played some (read: 2 hours of) Borderlands 2 then just fucked off until the following January when I bought Far Cry 3.

I played Reach online for ages though. Weird how I just could not be arsed with Halo 4... Even the story mode I never even half finished. I played through the one in Halo 3 loads and I think Reach has a really good story in general.

I think the maps were lacklustre? I think... Well everyone votes unanimously for Valhalla/Blood Gulch/Hemorrhage/whateverthefucktheycalleditthistime regardless so w/e. Literally the best map in the game, every game.

I feel the same. Just doesn't have the same spark that the other Halo's did. I suppose it was to be expected since Bungie isn't making the games anymore, but it's still rather sad. And the maps are rather lackluster. They all have the same feel of three paths through the map, middle, left right. That's it, really. And it gets old really fast. Just not a lot to enjoy.

I've played with it a bit, and here what I think;

- BR: Four shots is good. Now worth using.

- Carbine: Still utterly useless compared to BR and DMR. Slightly better than Light Rifle at close range.

- Light Rifle: Competes with the DMR at long range, okay at medium range vs. BR, loses to Carbine at close range.

- Automatic Weapons: Not much change from before, but reduction in autoaim is nice.

- Vehicles: While the 35% damage buff helps, 343i is ignoring the fact that the reason no one wants to use vehicles is because everyone spawns with Plasma Pistols and Plasma Grenades, turning vehicles into screaming metal deathtraps.

- Movement speed increase: Hey, remember when everyone said that the default speed was too slow and that we wouldn't need Sprint as long as we had a base movement speed appropriate to moving around the maps? Guess you shoulda listened, huh?

Well what do you know. Only 8 months old and it maybe finally doesn't feel like you're playing a Beta build.

I didn't hear anything about returning Firefight mode, Campaign scoring, or improved theater controls. Sorry Halo, you're still dead to me.
