Marvel Heroes Finally Makes Its PC Debut

[video=7420]

After four years in development, developer Gazillion has launched its superhero-based MMORPG Marvel Heroes.

"For over three years we've been building Marvel Heroes to be an exciting, free-to-play massively multiplayer action game, and we are ecstatic to finally put it in the hands of Marvel fans and gamers alike," writes Gazillion president David Brevik in this morning's official announcement. "The creation of Marvel Heroes has been a labor of love. As a die-hard Marvel fan, it's an honor to give players the chance to take on the roles of their favorite Marvel Super Hero in an epic adventure."

As Brevik's words may not be enough to properly instil hype for this title, Gazillion has also served up a launch trailer for Marvel Heroes. That'd be the clip you see embedded above.

Those of you who haven't been keeping detailed notes on the development of Marvel Heroes may be scratching your heads, wondering why you ought to care about any of this. "What can this game offer me that World of Warcraft or EVE Online can't?" you wonder aloud, not realizing that I'm unable to hear any of your questions. In case you're in this boat, Gazillion offers the following blurb detailing what you can expect to find in Marvel Heroes:

At launch, Marvel Heroes will feature 21 Super Heroes, each with unique and extensive leveling systems, power trees and equipment. Players can choose to wear costumes from over 70 years of Marvel history, including costumes from Marvel's recent theatrical blockbusters Marvel's The Avengers and Iron Man 3. At any time, players can swap between their favorite Marvel Super Heroes on the fly. Set across diverse locations from the Marvel Universe, Marvel Heroes offers fast-paced, action-packed game play with a robust crafting system, intense player-versus-player (PvP) combat, End Game, and much more.

As you'd expect from an MMO, Gazillion claims that it will periodically release new content for the game "including additional story missions, new playable Marvel Super Heroes, end-game content and much more." As the game itself is of the free-to-play persuasion, it'd be safe to assume that these updates will also be largely gratis (or that if there is a charge for them, that they'll go free of charge after a short period of initial availability).

If you're interested in taking Marvel Heroes for a spin, you need only pay a visit to the official Marvel Heroes site [https://www.marvelheroes.com/], register an account, then download the game's client. All of this is free of charge. Though currently PC exclusive, Gazillion has claimed that an OS X version of Marvel Heroes is currently in the works. We'll bring you more on that iteration of the game just as soon as Gazillion opts to hand out more info.

I'm curious. How is this game an MMORPG? It looks like a Marvel version of Diablo, and while that could be fun for a while(especially considering the guy who is in charge of it), that isn't what comes to mind when someone tosses the MMORPG term at me. For one, how is it massively online? Second, no custom characters? Existent published characters only? Not what I would look for in an MMO.

"What can this game offer me that World of Warcraft or EVE Online can't?" A completely different genre. May as well ask what Dragon Age 3 can offer me that WoW doesn't.

been playing it most of this evening.

its a diablo type point and click fest, the normal XP zones are actually public zones though like in an MMO and complete with open world bosses and events , then you have instances off of these that can be solo or group variety.

it looks great plays well and you can tell Mr Brevik was onboard!

each hero gets their own set of three talent trees which have D2 style synergies built in

so its a glowing thumbs up? well no the business model kinda sucks you get to pick 1 character out of 5 and judging by the volume of storms , scarlet whitches, hawkeyes and dare devils im seeing i think that might be the same 5 for everyone.

the price to unlock things seems a bit out of whack to me. i wanted to play dead pool or the hulk , they are 2k and 1200 points each , each bank slot is 550 and crafting tabs are 300 as are respec potions . the cost for 5500 is 50$ which is what it would cost to unlock my two pref characters and most of the bank.. thats before you start on the costumes boosts etc.

but is it pay to win? i dont think so , you can get hero unlocks as drops i hear but havent seen yet , but there are 2 crafting items that are in the shop and i dont know yet whether they drop in world or how usefull they are, so could turn out to not matter or every uber item might need them time will tell.

having fun just wish i could play a character i like.

Glad that Daredevil was one of the 5 starting heroes. Didn't need to spend a cent. Played the first mission after the prolgue in a party with my friends. Had a good time.

I wish they'd show more gameplay or something in this sort of deal. Yeah, that was AWESOME, but what does it have to do with the game?

If they showed any of the gameplay, nobody would download it.

I just played through the prologue, and it really doesn't look or play well. I expect it will pull in money because of the license though.

It is very Diablo like, only with some MMO areas. I suppose it's similar to Phantasy Star Online. Naturally it's nowhere near as good as any of those. Having a fixed set of characters to choose is actually less disappointing than the very limited equipment slots, and powers available.

If you actually want a superhero MMO, there's really only Champions Online, which ironically started as a Marvel-backed project.
