Thief Website Gets Major Info-Update

Eidos Montreal has dumped a load of new information on the Thief website including some long-awaited looks at Garrett's equipment, his foes and the city in which he lives.

Garrett has changed. For one thing, he's a lot more poetic about his chosen profession: "I am the shadows, the dark and deadly, the velvet night," he says on his website. "You will not see me coming." But it seems that quite a bit remains the same, too. He still has those ever-so-useful water arrows at his disposal, for one thing, and while rope arrows remain out of the picture, the "climbing gloves" that debuted in Thief: Deadly Shadows appear to have been replaced with a closer-to-home grappling hook.

Garrett's stomping grounds are familiar too, but not necessarily to fans of the old Thief titles. The City is ruled harshly by the unforgiving Baron who relies on his militia to keep the citizenry in line, while the people suffer and die from the ravages of a great plague. Basso the Boxman, previously an arsonist, is now apparently the proprietor of the Crippled Burrick Pub (or maybe he just hangs out there a lot) and uses Jenivere, his magpie, to deliver messages to Garrett in his clock tower hideout. Another prominent location in the city would seem to be The House of Blossoms, an opulent and discreet place of carnal distractions.

And here are some screens, which I am reasonably certain are reasonably new:

It doesn't look bad, it just doesn't look very "Thief." I readily admit that my bias (and advanced years) may be keeping me from seeing this objectively, but at this admittedly early point the parallels with Dishonored are way too obvious to overlook. Dishonored was a great game in its own right, yes, but as the old saying goes, if I wanted water, I'd ask for water.

Anyway, your mileage may vary, so don't take my word for it - have a look for yourself at thiefgame.com [http://www.thiefgame.com/].

It disturbs me that Jenivere has been turned from Basso's wife/a chambermaid into a pet bird.

Everything else is pretty cool, though. It's certainly more Deadly Shadows than Dark Project or Metal Age, but it looks good. I'm really interested to see how this game turns out, as a freaking gigantic Thief fan of epic proportions, though I know it will be different. I still think it will be very, very good.

I see this and I just think Dishonored. It could be a great game, but it's not very "Thiefy". I'm not even looking at it through nostalgia goggles. I just bought Thief 1 and 2 off steam a few months ago.

From the website...

"The most challenging heists, the most inaccessible loots, the best kept secrets: nothing is out of your reach."

o_O

I'm sorry, but any game/site that claims "loots" as a valid plural form, I cannot take seriously.

I agree and I'm not even a Thief fan; I've just seen some cutscenes on YouTube. But every time I see something new about this game I think "Dishonored clone" (What? It is: story's near-identical, gameplay seems to follow suit...).

Oh, well. Here's hoping that since it's a reboot they have Viktoria in there somewhere. She seemed cool.

"I am the shadows, the dark and deadly, the velvet night," he says on his website. "You will not see me coming."

Why. Why? WHY?! WHY DO DEVELOPERS HAVE TO SCREW WITH WHAT WORKS?! UGGG.

Alright, that's the first part of my rage complete. Seriously though, Garret had a fantastic personality! Why the hell would you go and change it into yet another ridiculous emo ninja. That's not who he was, and...well, you get the point. Ridiculous.

Beyond that, everything I see looks like an utter Dishonored clone. Now, I enjoyed quite a bit about Dishonored! But Thief is an entirely different franchise and doesn't deserve to be crammed into a form that doesn't fit.

Change for the sake of change is what I see, and few things piss me off more than that.

The more I see of this game, the more they turn Garrett into the worst cliche possible. A clock tower hideout? "I am the shadows"? The only way they could make this worse is by giving him super powers, but I guess they're saving that for the next announcement.

CHOOSE YOUR APPROACH: Leverage Garrett?s arsenal to take down guards with your blackjack, shoot one of your many arrow types or use your newly acquired focus abilities to manipulate the environment and outsmart your enemies. What kind of master thief will you be?
I would link the source page in their website, but the website is retarded in design.

Nope... I see it right there.

So wait, let me get this straight. Firstly...

"I am the shadows, the dark and deadly, the velvet night."
Secondly:

the "climbing gloves" that debuted in Thief: Deadly Shadows appear to have been replaced with a closer-to-home grappling hook.
Thirdly:

... Garrett in his clock tower hideout.
So he thinks he's the darkness, he has a grappling hook, and hangs out in a tower overlooking the city.

Face it guys, this is the new Garret:

Looks like they have seen the success of Dishonored and decided that they can do it too. This going to be an entirely different game with entirely different protagonist but with familiar names. Great plague authoritarian government? I bet that after this will come out Thief fans will look on Deadly Shadows in different light. Specifically they will be saying that Deadly Shadows was not perfect but still better than the reboot.

"Story near identical"

???

Dishonored's story was about getting revenge and clearing your name, this story is about getting caught up in the tyrranny of a cruel leader, from what we know. They're utterly different.

The reason you think it's a Dishonored clone is because its a first person stealth 'em up with modern graphics. The fact that Dishonored is pretty much the only other game in existence that follows the same formula makes it a natural comparison point. Sure, there's the seeing guards' positions through walls thing, but most stealth games have that now. Batman had it, Far Cry 3 had it, even Skyrim had it in a sense with the red dots on the compass telling you what direction enemies were in. Also, this game began development before Dishonored. This started in 2009, and Dishonored started some time after 2010, because that was when Arkane was bought by ZeniMax, meaning any similarities were coincidental, by the time all the details about Dishonored came out, I'm pretty sure the concept stage of Thief must have been finished.
