Scribblenauts Unmasked Will Exclude "Mature" DC Characters

Scribblenauts Unmasked aims to tap into the goofier side of superheroes.

One of the prevailing notions that have dogged comic books and their readers for decades is the belief that comics are merely kids stuff. Granted, in their early days comic books were primarily for children but as the years have gone on they've grown more and more adult, to the point that there are more than a few running books most parents would probably want to keep their kids away from. Even in the realm of the DC Universe things can get a bit M for Mature at times.

<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/trailers/7306-Scribblenauts-Unmasked-Announcement-Trailer>Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure, on the other hand, is aiming to keep things in the E for Everyone range, even if it means skipping over some of the darker elements of the DC Universe. "There are some characters we couldn't include because they are more mature DC characters," said Joseph Tringali, general manager of 5th Cell, the studio behind Scribblenaunts. In turn, Unmasked will be tapping into some of the sillier sensibilities that have, at times, governed comics and superheroes. "If you go back to the campy 1960s comic book TV shows where there's the onomatopoeia and the different sound effects. It's not dark or bloody or gratuitous."

While the idea of excluding perhaps beloved characters will probably rub some the wrong way, 5th Cell's desire to keep Scribblenauts kid-friendly shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The franchise has generally kept things pretty clean and really, a quick glance at Unmasked should be enough to understand that it's not aiming to emulate the grimmer face of comics. Still, you have to wonder who the game will be leaving out. Most would consider the Joker to be on the dark end of the DC spectrum but he'll be in the game. If the Joker gets a pass, then who's too adult for Scribblenauts?

Well I guess ya can't blame 5th Cell and this was something you could have seen coming. It would have been a bit beyond an E rating to include a nude Dr. Manhattan but I'm a bit worried that this means I won't be able to summon characters like The Hemo-Goblin or Snowflame.

Having this guy in this game would be as awesome as having Cthulhu was in the original Scribblenauts.

It doesn't matter in the end on the PC version, you can add custom content thanks to Steam Workshop.
Case in point:

So unless DC feels like overseeing the modding process...

With The Joker, it really depends on the incarnation. Sometimes he's funny and goofy and campy and sometimes he's absolutely horrifying. I'm thinking that they're largely going to ignore characters from DC's Vertigo line and that most iconic superheroes and supervillains will be left intact.

Still, given some of the truly twisted things you can in Scribblenauts I can't help but find this funny. There's an objective in the most recent one that asks you to add a secret ingredient to a pizza and creating a dead baby is recognized as a valid solution to the puzzle.

Well I guess this means we won't be getting most of vertigos line-up or any! And I was really looking forward to having Spider Jerusalem swear my way to victory.

Much preferred Scribblenuncles, myself.

Let's see.... I don't recall the Joker ever being a rapist. So Dr. Light might be out. Though you could just argue it's the Teen Titans animated series version, who was more a mindrape victim than a rapist.

And as that argument - and Tringali's own words - demonstrate, they have an out anyway that they can use for any must-haves. All they have to do is have the Cesar Romero Joker rather than the Heath Ledger one.

So, probably no Dr. Light, and no Major Force (the guy who dismembered Alexandra DeWitt and stuffed her in a fridge [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StuffedIntoTheFridge] (TV Tropes link, etc.)). I imagine there's a few more they'll skip, but that's about all the braincells I'm gonna spend on DC's cheapass lazy-writing shock moments for now.

So probably no Prof. Pyg then? Damn.

I hope they don't deem homosexuality as 'mature content' and leave out Renee or Batwoman. My first thought when I heard about this game was Kate...

Also that Harley design you can see in the picture has me wondering, will we get proper Amanda Waller or New52 Waller. I hope the former (even though I don't hate the rebooted one as much as some people.)

On the whole this move doesn't surprise me though. Makes sense.

Damn it, Snowflame was EXACTLY the guy I was coming here to post. And it disheartens me that I won't be able to summon Snowflame to do my bidding in this game. Sad face.

I think they mean characters like, say, Preacher or Yorick from Y: The Last Man (I don't think DC even owns those guys, really).

Dr. Light was around for forty years before they turned him into Dr. Rapey McRapeRape, he'll easily make it in.

Captcha: not a bot
I'm sure Buggertron the Sodomy Robot won't make it in.
