Ubisoft "Needs" More Wii U's Sold to Invest in Exclusives

Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot wants Nintendo to take steps to expand the Wii U user base.

Some developers and publishers have expressed doubts <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123851-Just-Cause-2-Developer-Says-Wii-U-Dev-Kits-Are-Collecting-Dust>about the Wii U, especially in the light of its <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121778-Wii-U-Sales-Forecast-Cut>rocky sales. Despite this, Ubisoft has generally been supportive of the console. In addition to the producing <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/10055-ZombiU-Review>ZombiU, one of the Wii U's better regarded exclusives, the publisher has <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124146-Ubisoft-Affirms-its-Wii-U-Support>frequently affirmed its belief in the system and its hopes that a bit of patience might see it succeed.

That said, it looks as though Ubisoft may be reaching the limits of its generosity. Speaking to Kotaku, Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot expressed that the company wouldn't be investing in new Wii U exclusives until sales for the console picked up. "We need more sold," said Guillemot. "[Nintendo] are coming with five of their biggest brands ever. And the Yen went down. So maybe they will take steps that will increase the number of consoles sold." While Guillemont didn't elaborate on what those steps should be, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122559-Ubisoft-Wants-a-Wii-U-Price-Cut>past statements from Ubisoft would suggest a price cut might be the publisher's preferred move.

Whether or not that happens however, Ubisoft may already be in the process of re-focusing its efforts for the Wii U while taking lessons it's learned from the system and applying them to other consoles. "We have to adapt the company to the potential of the market. So, what we did last year, was we knew we could learn second-screen with Nintendo, so we went full-speed to use this capacity the console was bringing. And we were able to develop Rayman, which will come at the end of this year and which is fantastic, using this second screen. What we saw is that, in learning that, we can also use it with the other consoles with [Xbox] Smart Glass, for example, and it's a good option that is coming to us."

So... the Wii-U needs to sell more units before Ubisoft release exclusives for it.

How about releasing that game they've been sitting on for the last couple of months that they recently described as a "system seller"? What was it called again?

Oh yeah! Rayman Legends...

Yes. Wait until Nintendo starts releasing their first party titles and then try and compete with them, as opposed to trying to sell the system with your own game with practically no competition to speak of. I'm sure people will choose Rayman over Mario. Just like they'll choose Rayman over Grand Theft Auto 5 with your new release date.

Clearly, Ubisoft is playing 5-Dimensional chess and we lowly common gamers can't see the depths of their genius.

Because waiting until Nintendo releases their own games and then trying to compete with them worked so well before, didn't it Yves.

The one thing third-parties have said time and again is that they hate having to compete with Nintendo's franchises on their consoles. Nintendo doesn't rush their franchises out the door in order to give other publishers more breathing room... and they complain about Nintendo not doing enough to sell the console.

It really is like they live in fucking bizarro world.
No, they're just that dumb. Seriously, you think they would have caught on by now but once again even the painfully obvious is too much for their atrophied brains to comprehend. Once again, Nintendo has to do all the work because apparently expecting devs and publishers to do their jobs is too much to ask

What Ubisoft wants or wanted, in a more round about way, is for Nintendo to front load their popular first party titles at or near release. This way Nintendo's titles drive sales of the system, while at the same time Nintendo takes the software sales hit of their not being enough installed consoles yet to make selling the software worthwhile. Does everyone understand why we always get shit release titles with consoles? Because publishers are sitting on the good profitable stuff until there are enough consoles sold. Nintendo does this too. Why do you think we always have to wait a year for Mario and Zelda?
