Forza Motorsport 5 Introduces Open-Wheeled Cars

Among a number of other major additions, word has come down from developer Turn 10 Studios that the upcoming Forza Motorsport 5 will finally add open-wheel race cars to the franchise.

As part of its effort to expand the Forza Motorsport universe, developer Turn 10 Studios has included open-wheel racers in the upcoming Forza Motorsport 5. A full list of the vehicles is not yet available, but the developer confirms that among these cars will be a 1976 McLaren M23, a 1976 Ferrari 312-2 and representative vehicles from the top IndyCar teams like Andretti Autosport, Team Penske and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

If none of those names mean anything to you, just know that this introduces a new type of racing to the Forza franchise, and that these cars go very, very fast.

Why add open-wheeled cars? Why now? Turn 10 studio manager Alan Hartman explains:

Including open-wheel cars in Forza Motorsport 5 brings Forza fans a whole new world of racing action. Players will be able to drive these incredible cars on a collection of world-famous race circuits as well as our Prague city track, which we debuted this week at E3. In addition, the brand new graphics engine in Forza Motorsport 5, powered by the Xbox One, will let Forza players get closer than ever to these amazing cars and to really build an appreciation for these masterpieces of race engineering.

Granted, there was a lot of hyper-diplomatic marketing speak in there, but Hartman makes a good point: The Forza series has always offered players the opportunity to examine every inch of their meticulously rendered rides, and if nothing else this should be one of the few chances (virtual or real) that the average person will ever have to pore over an IndyCar. Given the quality of prior Forza titles, we have to assume that these cars will also perform quite similarly to their real-world counterparts as well, so overall this is positive news for anyone who enjoys racing pixelated cars that they could never afford in meatspace reality.

Expect Forza Motorsport 5 to debut alongside the Xbox One this November.

IndyCar! Oh man, this makes me so happy, it's the one thing I've been missing in this franchise.

Forza has been my favourite racing franchise and I really do like the look of this.
I've been a Forza fan since Forza 2, and although I consider it one of the best racing franchises ever to grace the gaming market, I do think it's running the risk of going down the GranTurismo road and becoming stale. They are pumping out sequels too quickly and there isn't enough differentiation between them (with the exception of the glorious Forza Horizon). For example, I didn't buy Forza 4 because it was too similar to Forza 3. I knew Forza 4 was going to be good, but it would be just more of the same with new cars. And while as a Petrolhead I appreciate new cars, I'm not willing to buy a whole new game just for them nor put in the monumental amount of time required to complete a Forza game.

That said, I have high hopes for Forza 5 - but with the way Microsoft are handling things at the moment, I'm unsure as to whether I will be even getting an Xbox One at this rate.

Nice that they have a license for this, but Gran Turismo has had unlicensed F1 cars for ages, and on tracks that go both left and right :)

I totally agree. I didn't get Forza 3 as I was still happy with Forza 2 before I upgraded to Forza 4. And same as you, as it stands I won't be getting the Xbox One because I don't want to show support to the restrictions it's implementing.

Driving games... don't get me wrong, I actually really enjoyed my time with Gran Turismo... 2(I think, one of the psx ones), it's just that... well, my diving skills are best left on the kart game tracks...

My brain just can't get around realistic turning... and shifting gears... [sub]and knowing how to customize my car... [sub] and not choosing a car based solely on looks... [sub] and...[/sub][/sub][/sub]

Looks fun though...

HATE that none of the cars I bought for 3 carried over into 4.
That's one of the main reasons I didn't buy Forza 4 - I had put so much time into building up my perfect garage in Forza 3, there was no way I was starting from scratch in Forza 4.

I am a die-hard fan of open wheel racing, and have played Forza since Forza 2, but sadly, not even the inclusion of the current gen, sub-par open wheelers will get me to purchase this and the XBOX One.

And honestly, Forza, you really need to get rid of those rubbish courses and throw in tracks like Donnington Park, Bathurst, Sepang, Long Beach GP, etc...

I'm much the same, though I only came to the franchise with Forza 3 due to waiting for the XB360 to hit the £40 mark before buying one, and yeh... ..skipping Forza 5 unless it's got a PC or PS4 port.

And here we see the Sony Fanboy, performing his wretched mating dance of opening his mouth and cramming his foot in.

No, I just don't see the point of Indycar.

Gran Turismo has the license for Nascar, and it sucks...

If I ever came up with a reason to get an Xbox, you can be sure I wouldn't leave the shop without Forza.

As for Gran Turismo 6 on PS3... yeah I expect that to be a mess. Unless they've done some SERIOUS optimising since GT5, the old hardware just won't be able to cope with it :( A m,ore intriguing comparison is Driveclub, at least until they put GT6 on PS4.

Why can't someone do a decent driving sim on PC?
