Transformers Universe Developer Lays Off 13 Staff

A decision to use existing tech rather than develop new is behind the Jagex layoffs.

Jagex, the developer behind the Transformers Universe [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110607-New-Transformers-MMO-Details-Roll-Out] free to play browser MMO, has announced that 13 jobs have been lost, as a result of a decision to use established rather than in-house technology. This triggered an internal reorganization in which some staff were assigned to other projects, but there wasn't anywhere for the remaining 13 to go. Describing the move as an attempt to scale back the development team, Jagex said in a statement that it was "confident that this reduction will not adversely impact the game."

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Jagex is under considerable pressure to release Transformers Universe. This is that same game which Jagex cancelled science fiction MMO a 2013 release [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116127-Jagex-Halts-Stellar-Dawn]. That was before the decision to change technologies, which presumably means a significant revamp, something that may be difficult to pull off in the time frame.

Jagex says it will be releasing more game details on its website, www.transformersuniverse.com, soon.

Hmmm...13 out of how many, though? Hard to tell the importance of the layoff otherwise.

Jagex didn't "ruin" RuneScape - they created it in the first place, and continue to maintain it. So if they "ruined" it then they ruined it right from the moment they made it :p
Wikipedia reports that Jagex has approximately 500 staff, so 13 is fairly insignificant against the total.

Danm, now I'm on the same boat too (that game would be perfect for me if the character customization is deep).

You make this statement knowing that Runescape has literally become a different game over the past 3 years?

I didn't know Activision lost the Transformers licence. Which is a shame as War/Fall of Cybertron were both fun.
And probably the best Transformers games released in a while. Do you think this is why High Moon moved to Deadpool? X3

TBH i prefer a deadpool game over another transformers one. Cant remember who said it but the games just felt like playing transformable soldiers, since nothing else really screamed out giant mech warrior. A truly awesome Transformers game would be giant mechs destroying environments, stealth play (hiding in traffic etc), damage models e.g. destroy leg joint to cripple and little things like that. Which sadly enough the games didnt have at all...

There's no character customization in the game. You have a set selection of characters you can unlock and then take into missions. Their website doesn't talk a whole lot about this last time I checked and you have to dig up reports of what the game is like from people in beta who've broken their NDA.

As far as i know, Highmoon will be making another Tf game, they stated so in interviews for fall of cybertron.

They wont be set on earth though, apparently the journey from Cybertron to earth took thousands of years, anything could of happened in that time. :)I'm hoping for Regulon 4!

That's what Transformers is, they aren't giant mechs, they are sentient robotic organisms, as stated many time with int he cartoons and the movies. they even have a kind of biology with some of there inner circuitry, such as T-cogs (which allows them to transform (See transformers prime operation bumblebee part 1 and 2) and Spark Chambers :)

Exactly. To me the best Transformers stuff Has little focus on Humans. Or even Earth. The old Comics, The Current ones as well are all Amazing. Robots In Disguise is a series about Rodimus leading a group of Cybertronians on an epic quest across the stars and the crazy personalities of the crew.
More than Meets the Eye is about Bumblebee trying to unify Cybertron now that the Great war is finnaly over, the internal politics and utter aliness of these beings.

No, I did not know that, I havn't played it in a good 3-4 years. I knew there had been changes, but I had not experienced them first hand... Shame though, I remember enjoying the game at the time.

Still, I think that Phrozen was implying that the game had been taken away from its original creators and ruined by a new dev studio (a situtation which is all too common) but which is not what happened here - the original studio did it all by themselves. That was all I was pointing out.

Make that 3 now. Seriously I don't play MMOs really, but I wouldn't mind trying this out with my friends.

Source? Because not even TF Wiki has any information on it. Not to mention that War and Fall are both tough acts to follow up on X3

Try finding interviews on YouTube before FOC was released, there is also is kind of time line on the fall of cybertron website (or high moons, one of the 2)
