LittleBigPlanet Reaches Eight Million Unique Levels

The LittleBigPlanet community has been busy.

Sony and Media Molecule arguably took something of a risk in investing in LittleBigPlanet. While the game boasted a built in series of levels that were entertaining enough on their own, the core and longevity of the experience depended entirely on gamers liking the game and establishing a community large enough to make the title's mantra of "Play, Create, Share" worthwhile.

You might say the gamble was a success. Countless gamers have embraced LittleBigPlanet and its sequel and, according to a release on the PlayStation Blog, have since used the games' creation tools to fashion more than eight million unique levels. "LittleBigPlanet continues to burst with awesomeness and pure creativity as we now have more than 8,000,000 community levels," said Steven Isbell, the community coordinator for LittleBigPlanet. "We're heading towards LittleBigPlanet's 5th anniversary this year, and the community is still growing strong."

While Isbell doesn't say so directly, the eight million levels are presumably spread across the various versions of LittleBigPlanet. This would include the PS3 releases, PSP title and the <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/9940-LittleBigPlanet-Vita-Review>Vita game released last year. Also, while eight million unique levels is certainly impressive, it's probably fair to assume that not every one of them is top tier in nature. None of this is at all to try and diminish the genuine accomplishment the LBP community has achieved, but it's still good to put forward a bit of context before giving yourself a "pat on the back" as Isbell suggests. Regardless, the fact remains that, at this point, you could pretty much buy a LittleBigPlanet title and never need another game again.

I was going to make a point that atleast 2 million of those are probably like the 'Newest Submited' Section of the Portal 2 maps.
That is, Most likely either terrible, easy to the point of insult , unfinished, or unwinnable.

And more than half of them are rip-offs of popular franchises (i´m guessing, but there really is a lot of those), mostly copies of the first level in Mario. The rest is trophy hunting levels where you get a lot of cheap points...

I used to love LBP, some of the creativity that can come from those levels boggles my mind. Especially on LBP 2, often I'm all "how the hell did you make that?"

But the breakdown of the levels is probably a little something like this:

30%: uninspired garbage that may or may not be completable
40%: Trophy hunting garbage with RATE SHARE PLZ ALL TROPHYS!!!! Plastered all over it. I blame the trophy system for this, if I was in MM I'd have axed about half of the trophies.
25%: Decent levels with some creative thought put into them, sure they may be Mario rip-offs and references to other pop culture, but for the most part are okay. Effort went into them. Still scarily easy to break though.
5%: Good stuff, you will play it and most likely enjoy it, may even add to favorites.
<1%: The real gold. These levels get on the Media Molecule picks, and are works of absolute art.

I've played some bad, BAD levels on LBP, but even the they can grant a fun time when playing with some friends and slappin each other around. Now that's not saying they're good, at all, but they can still allow some fun. Unless they're, you know, impossible.

I got LBP on the first day it was out and seeing all of the great levels people had made when it first started was awesome. The first level I remember being really popular was this:

Back then this made everyone go "WTF how did you make this? That is insane!", nowadays this is childs play compared to what people have made.

this is little big planet, and knowing inthernet, half of them are probably shaped like penis with legs.

no, but seriously as with such content always probably less than 1% of them are useful.
though i rmeember i made a mod for SAMP that gave a very small benefit to people who dont like to be blobbed by terribel tree graphics. i created it for myself but i also put it up on one of the sites. and i forgot about it. come 4 years later i see it copied to toher sites peopel trying to claim its "glory" :D
