Assassin's Creed II Goes Free On Xbox Live This Month

The next game to join the Xbox Live Games With Gold program will be Assassin's Creed II.

When Microsoft unveiled its Games With Gold scheme at the recent E3 conference, two games were specifically mentioned as examples of titles that would be available, free of charge, for download to anyone with an Xbox Live Gold subscription: Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed II. This revelation excited people, but then the program debuted and to date the only free titles we've seen have been Fable III and the recently added Defense Grid: The Awakening.

This has upset some Xbox Live Gold subscribers who were hoping to play the games Microsoft promised us at some point in the near future. While we still don't know when Halo 3 might appear, we do now have a release date for the gratis version of Assassin's Creed II. That title will hit Games With Gold on July 16.

As with all Games With Gold titles, Assassin's Creed II will only be free for a limited time. Specifically, the game will be replaced with a new title on August 1. Those who download the game prior to that date will be able to play it for free as long as they don't delete the game from their hard drives (though if that does happen, it should remain in your Xbox Live download history at its $0 price point).

Colossal disaster. PSN has been making free games available at a much faster rate, some of the games are still free, and PS+ is still cheaper. The value for XBL is getting better, but they're still holding a lot of stuff needlessly to ransom.

Multiplayer gaming, makes some sense, and you can justify charging for permission to watch Netflix, etc, if you do enough double-talk, but there is NO EXCUSE for making us pay a subscription for the "privilege" of buying DLC!

I used to support the Xbox over the other consoles, but I'm finding fewer and fewer reasons to keep doing so.

Yeah, announced just a day or so after the craptastic start of their free-games program and the revelation that gamers don't want shit XBLA titles. Way to go Microsoft. Also ironic that it's free on the 16, just a few days after the first subscription cycle for the $1 dollar gold subscription deal they were offering for E3 expires. Complementary reach around, anyone?

Tell me about it. I resubscribed to PS+ last month for the first time since it started. Why? Because they were giving a bunch of fairly recent games away for free. I got Little Big Planet Karting and Saints Row 3, two games I was really interested in for the cost of my subscription last month, plus some other free games that I figured I'd try because hey, they're free games.

Today I booted up the PS3, went to the PS Store and saw Battlefield 3 is free as well now, so fuck it, why not? Meanwhile, Microsoft is giving away a game (singular) that I bought for next to nothing three years ago, already well after release, and which has seen multiple sequels since. I paid $2.50 for the COMPLETE AC2 for my computer with all the dlc which I doubt this comes with and I bet they still charge 800 ms points for the dlc, and live is still 8$ a month so you are still wasting money but thanks anyways microsoft!

What do you mean? I haven't been a gold subscriber for quite some time and I recently downloaded the slingshot DLC for XCOM

Are you calling Defense Grid shit? Because it isn't. Admittedly, I only have experience with the PC version, but it's a polished and challenging tower defense game that's well worth the price.

Exactly. Microsoft gives away a really old game that already has not just one, but two sequels; Sony gives away Battlefield 3. And two others (Jet Set Radio and Odd World: Munch's Oddysee). Somehow I don't think Microsoft is giving the game give-away program much seriousness. Alternatively, Sony just has better contacts/deals in place and it will take a while for Microsoft to catch up.

I am extreeeeeeemely interested in this point. Does anyone know anything that confirms this into law?

I have Assassin's Creed 2, was $15 bucks when I bought it over a year ago I believe, but would definitely download it so I can forever tie it to my XBL account.
This would be a great way to promote those Xbone features.
