Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Joins Games On Demand

For a mere $40 you can now download the Xbox 360 incarnation of the underappreciated Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen will go down in history as one of my favorite games of the current, moribund console generation. I will grant that it's flawed and many of the game's central mechanics are unnecessarily obscure, but once you moved beyond these niggling issues, you realize that Capcom has prepared an open-world roleplaying epic unlike any other. It mates the huge scope of Skyrim with the action-focused combat of games like Devil May Cry to create something wholly original, wholly Japanese and most crucially, wholly Capcom.

Now the game is available on Games On Demand. As of now, if you visit the Xbox Live Marketplace and bring up the official Dark Arisen page [http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-us/Product/DD-Dark-Arisen/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80243430814], you'll find that you can download the title for $40. As with the retail release of Dark Arisen, that purchase price also grants you access to the original Dragon's Dogma, as well as the copious number of DLC additions released for it. All told, there's no hyperbole in saying that you could very easily lose 100 hours in the content Capcom has presented here.

How is this news, you ask? Well honestly, it's not. But since I've got access to the Escapist's backend, I occasionally get the chance to write up stories on stuff simply because I think it's neat. This is one of those times. If you have any interest in roleplaying games - particularly the idea of a Japanese take on stereotypically Western roleplaying game tropes - that $40 asking price is absolutely worth it.

Hmmm. Your concept of "wholly" differs from mine. I will admit some innovative and well-crafted mechanisms within the game design that might be considered specific to Japan and/or Capcom, but the majority of it's lore and bestiary appears markedly derivative of occidental myth/story-telling traditions.

Which, in itself, seems a prevalent feature of much Japanese game design. :/

Yeah, I'm a very big fan of the game, but as far as the story and lore/mosnters go, it's VERY inspired by germanic/west european beliefs. Which is still pretty refreshing considering the settings and ideas JRPG's have used for several years now. Kind of fun to revisit what they started with so many years ago in an updated format.

My issues with this article aside, I would just like to point out that games on demand is terrible and you can buy the game new for the same price retail. Or wait and get a physical copy much cheaper, because games on demand never seems to lower their prices.

Bought it for around half that on PSN months ago. Might have been a Playstation+ exclusive discount or something. Don't remember the details. Point is, I don't know why this is news.

Still, awesome game, would buy for $40 if I didn't already have it.

I would be all over this if it came to PC. C'mon Capcom, make it happen already!

Never had any interest in the last generation of consoles so never got a PS3/360.

... Forty Dollars? Seriously? I can go down to my local game shop and get a brand new physical copy for only fifteen pounds! I'm not sure what that would equate to in dollars but Forty is simply outrageous!

According to Google, that's $23US.

Underappreciated? You know what I underappreciate? Selling an expansion as a new game.

I don't know about local stores, but national retailers? Gamestop charges 40 for Dark Arisen.

I just finished the game and got it just the way this article describes.

Definitely cheaper it stores, but also definitely an epic people shouldn't miss.

To be fair, the whole of the original game is still on the disk with all the expansion material. Even if Capcoms reasoning of "the expansion is just too big to be sold as dlc" is on the lame side, you're still getting tons of content, plus the original game for cheaper than the original was released. And people who owned the original did get some bonuses if they decided to buy the Dark Arisen version as well.
