F.E.A.R. Online Offers Free To Play Horror

Survival horror shooter franchise F.E.A.R. is going free to play, courtesy publisher Aeria Games and Korean developer Inplay Interactive.

F.E.A.R. Online, as its name would suggest, is an upcoming multiplayer-focused adaptation of the acronym-infested F.E.A.R. franchise. While the series has been out of the spotlight for a bit, it drew a substantial fanbase thanks to being a competent shooter and one of the more legitimately terrifying survival horror offerings in history.

This new online version supposedly continues the overarching story of Alma, the spooky little ghost girl behind all the scary bits of the F.E.A.R. franchise, though the official announcement of this title seems to indicate that it will favor multiplayer gun battles over terrifying set pieces. Specifically, the press release claims that F.E.A.R. Online will "focus on several team combat modes spanning over ten ominous maps packed with grotesque details such as still-twitching bodies hanging from meat hooks and messages smeared in blood."

As far as gameplay modes, while we're sure that neither Aeria nor Inplay has divulged everything we'll see in F.E.A.R. Online, the two firms have promised both competitive and co-operative multiplayer modes, and the return of the "Soul King" multiplayer mode which debuted in F.E.A.R. 3.

While there's currently no release date attached to F.E.A.R. Online, those of you who desperately want to jump back into this dark, bloody world can sign up to beta test the title by visiting the game's official site [http://fearonline.aeriagames.com/]. Otherwise, while you wait for the arrival of F.E.A.R. Online, enjoy that clip embedded at top-right. It's the game's announcement trailer, so expect an unrealistically glossy portrayal of the eventual release.

Has everyone forgotten about the free-to-play multiplayer game F.E.A.R. Combat? Admittedly it was just the multiplayer portion of the already-released first game, but it was still online, horror, and free to play. I don't know why everyone is reporting this as though it's a first for the franchise.

P.S. Thanks

There has already been a free multiplayer F.E.A.R. online. Is this just an updated version of that game, with better graphics and more game modes? The old one was kinda fun, in a CS-with-horror-stylings way but got bogged down easily the more players that were on a server. Optimized for online play it was not.

Remember FEAR 1, with its unique art style, weapons, and completely insane multiplayer?

A Warner Brother CEO who saw the insane success of Warframe, took out a dart board, and covered it with franchises they own.

Trust me, people are trying to get more co-op free to play shooters after the mountains of cash Warframe has made, even if they don't understand what made Warframe so successful.

Anyone knows whether F.E.A.R. Combat still works..? I remember playing the thing for ages when I was younger. Fun times.

Um... I know it's a horror franchise, and all, but...

...Didn't Alma already die? Like, twice? With the second one carrying a pretty convincing implication that she was really gone for good?

...Heaven forefend we try to push on without our spooky little girl, I guess...

if by insane you mean only 1 server up and same 3 players in every day that, while seems to be playing it for years, was beat by me logging in for the first time, then yes, i do remmeber.
well at least thats what my experience with fear1 multiplayer was back in the day.

You know, after 6 years of playing the original fear multiplayer, and slowly watching its fanbase die, I thought this day would never come, heres to hoping it brings back most of the original combat style! I need to play a game that I can instantly be a god at again....
