Kickstarter Opening Doors to Canada

Kickstarter will be launching officially in Canada on September 9th.

Canadians will be getting some new opportunities to flex their creativity in the near future. Whereas once residents of the northern nation had to jump through hoops to launch their projects on the popular crowdfunding site, it's been revealed that Kickstarter will shortly be making its <a href=http://www.kickstarter.com/canada>official Canadian debut. Among the events planned to celebrate the site's arrival in the region are "Kickstarter Schools" in Toronto and Montreal that we can only assume will be tailored toward teaching prospective crowdfunders the ins and outs of the Kickstarter process.

Ironically, these "schools" may be arguably less necessary now that Kickstarter is establishing a presence in the country. Previously, Canadian Kickstarter candidates had to go through the process of setting up an American shell company to start a funding campaign. By launching officially in Canada, that barrier to entry will presumably be removed, making the proceedings all the simpler going forward. The official launch of Kickstarter Canada has been slated for September 9th. That being the case, impatient crowdfunders living in the region can start building projects now.

Overall, it's hard to see the expansion of Kickstarter to another region as being anything other than good. In fact, if there's one thing we'd like to see it would be for the crowdfunding site to stretch its reach even further. Kickstarter's <a href=http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/country_select?ref=w_started>country selection page currently only includes three nations: the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. Granting that those countries encompass hundreds of millions of people, it's still a shame to think of the many projects that could benefit from Kickstarter in other regions around the world.

Finally. About time, it'll be nice to see some local projects go up. I wish it would go out to more than the three most English nations in the world however.

that's the problem though, the developers of kickstarter are based out of NYC, bringing it to non-english speaking countries without it being a mess takes lots of time and effort, otherwise projects will probably have a much higher probability of running rampant with scams and such, not to mention figuring out where the majority of your audience is (a.k.a. those 3 english speaking "nations")

Oh, I never meant to imply that it would be easy, just that it would be nice if this sort of crowd-funding effort were available to the majority of the population (which the UK, US and Canada combined, are not). Just because it's difficult, doesn't mean it shouldn't be done eventually.

Let's see how much time it will take for the Epic Meal Time guys to Kickstart a house made out of bacon.

true, unfortunately it'll probably mean they'll have scour around until they can find people from those countries/continents to help setup/transition kickstarter into a format that would be capable for those nations as well. almost all kickstarters are niche and small, so making it a global thing can be very hard for alot of developers/makers to handle.
