God of War II Director Returns to Sony Santa Monica

Cory Barlog is back at Sony Santa Monica and working on something "huge."

Sony Santa Monica has been busy as of late. In addition to the development of <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/10230-God-of-War-Ascension-Review-Enter-the-Furies>God of War: Ascension, which released earlier this year, and its work assisting Ready At Dawn on the PS4 exclusive <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124818-The-Order-1886-Fights-Monsters-With-Steampunk>The Order: 1886, <a href=http://www.polygon.com/2013/7/18/4535666/battlestar-galactica-writer-michael-angeli-sony-santa-monica>screenwriter Michael Angeli recently revealed he was working with the studio on a new project. Now, it's been announced that God of War 2 director Cory Barlog has returned to the studio, and he's working on something big.

"What am I working on, you ask?" he wrote in a recent post on the PlayStation blog. "Sadly, I cannot tell you... yet. But I can say that it is freaking huge, and it will live up to the standards that I helped establish here at [Sony Santa Monica]." He added that the studio is currently searching "high and low for the best of the BEST" to assemble an "Ocean's 11" level team to work on his project. Vague as that is, it would seem that Sony Santa Monica is prepping for something exciting.

Barlog left Sony Santa Monica in 2007 for what he's described as a "creative walkabout," hoping to "get the experience I knew I needed to become a master craftsman." Apparently now feeling "ready" he hopes to use his "newly honed powers of awesome to create something that will rock the free world." Obviously we'll have to see how his new project turns out before passing judgment on his degree of "awesome" mastery. That said, you have to at least appreciate his enthusiasm. Videogames may be a business, but it's always nice to see someone that enjoys what they're doing.

Santa Monica has been missing something as of late. Let's hope we can get another great franchise out of them. God of War 1 and 2 were pretty great, and they managed to pull off set pieces I had no idea the PS2 could handle. Best wishes to them.

Excitement. Excitement everywhere. Can't wait to hear more. Sony doesn't have the habit of disappointing with an original IP.

The director of my favorite God of War may be working something new? I will definitely keep my eyes on this.

Oh can't wait. Let's see if there is anything else he wants to become un-canon in another franchise just cause he can. Yeah, I'm not letting that God of War 1 incident go. No way, no how.

Oh. Cool. I didn't realize he'd left, I just thought he wasn't helming games anymore. That's fine. God of War 2 was pretty great, no complaints there. Always been pretty happy with Sony Santa Monica's productions, and this news doesn't look to change that. So...keep it up, SSM?

Everytime anyone does anything in Santa Monica, I tend to imagine Therese sending them through a sewer at night to a haunted hotel first.

This guy was awesome, I remember watching him on the special features of God of war 2. He's a pro and I find myself extremely excited about this project!
