Microsoft Reveals Xbox Live "Season Pass Guarantee"

The Xbox Live Season Pass Guarantee means that gamers who purchase a season pass on the Xbox 360 will automatically get it for the Xbox One when they upgrade.

So let's say you own an Xbox 360 ("You own an Xbox 360") and you're not quite ready to commit to an Xbox One until maybe next year. But the new Call of Duty is coming in November, and with it a pile of future DLC that you know full well you're going to buy on launch day. Thus, you are thinking about a season pass - but what if you upgrade to the Xbox One before the season pass is fulfilled?

Fear not! Microsoft has your back with the Xbox Live Season Pass Guarantee. "With Season Pass Guarantee, you can purchase a Season Pass for a participating Xbox 360 title and automatically receive access to download the equivalent Xbox One Season Pass," the company announced on the Xbox Wire. "It's simple."

The Season Pass Guarantee is being applied to games on a publisher-by-publisher basis, but Microsoft said that Activision, EA and Ubisoft are already signed up for the program. The full list of participating publishers and titles will be released over the next few months.

Well that's pretty cool of them to do that, and rather unexpected too.

I wonder if Sony will do something similar?

And with all these turn arounds thy're pulling, maybe we can have some fucking PC games Microsoft?

Huh? What do you mean? The PC is getting Project Spark and Titanfall. Two of the supposedly "MUST HAVES" of the Xbox One.
I don't know what Project Spark is because I haven't been paying attention. Titanfall is an EA game, nothing to do with Microsoft.

I mean more: where are Microsofts first party games.

Or more simply: y u no put Halo on PC?

So, you buy the game twice? Of course the publishers sign up for that deal.
Why would you buy a game you already have for your new console? It may look a bit better but other than that it's exactly the same game.
I do not see many people using this feature. Still, it's nice for the people who will.

Never thought Microsoft would be guilty of good business practice.

Halo: CE and Halo 2 were ported to PC, and Spartan Assault on Windows 8 looks cool for a twin-stick shooter.

No idea why they never bothered with Halo Wars. Ensemble worked hard adapting the 360 controller for an RTS, but that game is begging for mouse and keys.

GameStop offers exchanges for 360 to Xbone games for $10. Not that I would even bother with Xbone, but the option is there.

Ask my good sir and you shall receive from me!
In my defence you never specified what kind of Halo game it had to be. XD

OT: Huh, this actually sounds pretty nice. Although for some reason MS' announcements lately seem to come in pairs, we get one good one (for example dropping mandatory Kinect), but then they give us a shitty one after that (Xbox One now only launching in 13 countries instead of the originally planned 21).

Come one MS, break the habit and just let this stay as good news. XD

Well at least DLC is backwards compatible on the Xbone. Meanwhile everyone still has to buy all of their games again or not play them on it.

I'm aware of those, I actually have the first two on DVD for PC.

I dont have Windows 8 and from what I've seen it's an okay twin stick.

But why no 3, ODST, Reach and 4? I mean there's the exclusive selling point for the Xbox but the market for that and the PC market for it are different things.

It's not something that upsets me or makes me mad, just never really understood it, as I'm not willing to invest in an Xbox for them (I already have enough consoles and not enough other exclusives are there to justify the expense), but if they were on PC I'd definately be interested.

Console sales spike every time a big exclusive comes out, and that's where Microsoft makes most of their profit. Not to mention the amount of money they make running Xbox LIVE.

It really comes down to console titles outselling PC. Bioshock Infinite sold 733,017 units for the 360 and 407,183 for PS3. Compare that to the 167,784 sales on PC. Yeah it's a big chunk, but when the plan is to sell consoles, it's not worth going after.

They'd make the Xbox Live money regardless because of things like Call of Duty, Halo on it's own doesn't drive Xbox Live, there's a lot of multiplayer people want.

As for the unit sales spikes, that's true enough. But I do think they'd make a lot of money if they released PC ports a few months later. The PC and console markets aren't quite the same beast and people with real gaming PC's generally won't buy a console for one exclusive, much like most people just stick to their console and don't care about the PC.

I'd be interested in some concrete numbers and projections from inside Microsoft about this.

Good of Microsoft to protect people's ability to spend more money than needed on games. Not criticizing Microsoft much though, more so criticizing season passes. I got CoD Elite when it wasnt free (was forced by friends). Sure I got all the DLC for cheaper...but Ive barely played 80% of it. And Im an avid CoD fan. But I dont just play CoD either...

well i guess thats good, but really what it is, if you buy, say, Call Of Duty on the 360 and get the season pass then if you decide to buy call of duty again on the Xbox One you still have that season pass? yes thats good but it isnt anything spectacular really.

Okay so hold up, let me break this down.

November rolls around and I buy CoD: Ghosts (59.99) for Xbox 360, and the Seasons Pass (also 59.99). Some time later, shall we say July, I spend 499.99 on your console and I'm dumb enough to buy THE SAME GAME which which will STILL be 59.99 brand new at retailers (or 5 bucks less used and you know they're just gunna be shelf full of those as there is every year), you do that solid of saving me 60 bucks on the seasons pass..

Thanks, I guess? How many people actually buy a full price (and season's pass DLC) game twice within a year for two separate platforms?

I would like to point out that this is only available to people who brought a Season Pass and most likely only the dlc associated to the Season Pass.

I'm not sure why this is positive or negative. For this to be relevant, you'd have to purchase both an X-Box 360 and an X-Box One copy of the same game. Why would anyone do anything like this?
