Ubisoft Takes Its Ill-Starred Kinect Fighting Game To Xbox One

You'll need to read his moves. Also, try not to get hit so much.

Ubisoft has resurrected its Kinect exclusive Fighters Uncaged [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102885-Kinect-Gets-Its-Very-First-Alleyway-Brawler] and repackaged it as Fighter Within, a new fighting game for Xbox One revealed at Gamescom 2013. Beat up your friends! It's something you've always dreamed of, and this trailer will show you ... actually, it won't show you that much. But it looks pretty. That's the important thing.

If you don't remember the original, that's because it was condemned by every reviewer under the sun. Bad gameplay and dodgy AI were the two sore points. make changes to its box packaging [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106033-UFC-Sues-Ubisoft-Over-Fighters-Uncaged], removing any trace of Zuffa's trademark.

Is there a website? Yes, there is, but don't expect to learn much from it [http://fighter-within.ubi.com/fighter-within/en-us/index.aspx]. Looks like someone was in a hurry to clean up.

I bought Fighters Uncaged - Played for about 3 fights. Was a complete and utter mess of a game.

Will wait for reviews for this one I think.

Oh, I thought it was to be some big new reveal. But it's just a rehash of something already done that previously crashed and burned? Depends how much of a rehash it is and how much it is actually a brand new game, but that's coming off a bit limp based on this news.

As much as that trailer's trying to make it look like awesome squared, surely everyone knows the game itself is going to look more like

Also, yes. That website is hilarious.

If they could make this game good id buy kinect. It wont be thougg. I can see two major barriers.

1) Most gamers are too overweight to throw a head kick.
2) Most gamers are too unfit to shadow box more than a minute at a time.

Shame really. Id buy a quality K1 kinect fighting game in a heart beat.

I don't get why a Kinect game is trying to have so much bloody/realistic violent graphics when this game is ultimately targeted at a completely different crowd, i.e. small children, old people and stupids.

It's like Microsoft are convinced that proper gamers will come to accept Kinect as a decent control scheme on the same level as a controller, which it will never be for several extremely obvious reasons:

> You have to wave your arms and legs around while standing next to someone doing the same thing
> Both of you have to try not hitting each other in real life while at the same time trying to stay within the Kinect's sensor range
> This is also assuming you have a pretty specious/empty room with no expensive stuff lying around to break
> Can't play this for more than 15-30 minutes before you start getting cramps or simply can't be bothered jumping around anymore
> COMPLETE LACK OF PHYSICAL FUCKING FEEDBACK. You know, that really big one.

...yeah.

I will admit that Kinect can be useful/fun to use in some extremely specific situations, i.e. games that don't keep making you think "boy I sure wish I had a controller right now".
A Vs Fighter game isn't one those things that needed Kinect.

Because they keep hoping that SOMETHING will win over the hardcore gamers.

Apparently, the crappy controls and mechanics of Steel Battalion, leading to an utter sales failure, weren't enough to dissuade more exercises in futility.

It amazes me at how despite being enamored with this device, neither the 3rd or 1st parties who develop for it really seem to put forth any effort. It's like the don't realize if you want to make things work you have optimize and playtest the HELL out of this. Yeah, testing isn't fun, but it's necessary. If you want something to succeed, you have to put the work in for it.

3rd time a charm?
Seriously OUCH that was painfully bad. Oh the idea was half decent but the game simply didn't work.

So they feel that Kinect 2.0 is so much better that they can now try it again? You know why not, lets wait on the reviews of this. This would be a great test for Kinect 2.0

After all Kinect 1.0 can be seen as WiiWaggle. And the Wii came out with a Wii Plus add on and suddenly it could be better.

So who knows maybe this time fighters uncaged actually can be played. There is worse!

While I hate the argument that these are bad designs because you can't relax to them after a hard days work(gaming is supposed to be a hobby that you play for the game alone, not just some habitual relaxation tool like a cigarette you have during breaks), but the Kinect in general just does not provide any sort of gameplay enhancement that makes it fun to use. The only thing it really does well is dance games and maybe a few exercise games. If that's what you're into, then get this device. However, it won't appeal to this "hardcore" gaming crowd that they seem to want to cater to a majority of the time. I either hope that it finds its niche really quickly and actually lives up to a decent potential, or that it crashes and burns soon enough that we can finally put it under wraps. Peripheral free motion controls are just awful anyway for anything else. The Wii at least had a controller, and I'd go as far to say I'll take a Wii over using a Kinect.

They haven't filled in the "how to play" section of their website yet?

Isn't that, like, the only real issue for a Kinect-based fighting game?

I want to bash this but I have to admire their desire to make a second one despite how horribly the first was recieved.

Probably it will be shovelware and suck huge donkey eggs, but maybe, just maybe, with the new tech on the new system it could be good, and give the gaming world something new to experience and enjoy. These are the risks that must be taken for progress.

Or to trick kids grandmothers into wasting $60 on a birthday gift they'll play twice then trade in for $2 towards a real game.

this is an advertisement not a trailer, also pretty sure the game won't be very good since historically these full motion control fighting games (red steel anyone?) are shit

Yeah, basically nothing says 'relax' after a hard days work that waving your arms around like you're swatting bees. Seriously, anyone who would probably buy this game would likely have a punching bag and guess what, that at least provides something called tactile feedback. Seriously though it seems M$ is targeting upper middle-class suburban rich kids with the XBone.

Who else is going to have a large enough living room with the big flat screed TV and the time to be bothered to stand up and play this? If you're the kind of person who's income level allows you to have this sort of set up... you likely spend a lot of time working to secure said income.
I think the main problem is that it simply won't work. If they could actually get the game to be fun and the controls to feel good, I would be very interested in trying it.

I see the physical demands as more of a bonus. Games aren't always for relaxation. That's like claiming that games have to be "fun". Do people relax by playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent or Dark Souls? Am I relaxing when I'm trying to find a way to defeat Oda in Shogun 2? I find it more difficult that stuff I do at work.

I'd gladly spend 30 minutes to an hour burning a bunch of calories playing a physical game. That would be awesome.

But this won't be awesome because it just won't work. Combining the camera of a really advanced version of Kinect with the Oculus Rift could make a wide range of games that would be a real blast to play. The problem with exercise is that it is super boring, unless you actually get together with people to play a game. But that takes too long. I'd absolutely love to get home from work, click a few buttons, and be involved in video game that could entertain (or terrify) me while I move around for an hour or two.

When marketing the kinect 2 Microsoft basically said that they fixed the issue with the kinect being completely incapable of accurately following the players movements or hell the players skeletal structure lets say that they stopped it from sucking no one explained how they would fix the problem of no physical feed back and if there is no solution for it the shouldn't developers stop making games that would require physical feedback or better yet can't Microsoft just dump the kinect until they can get the damn thing work.

Aaaaaand ninja'd. So they focused on getting the trailer out before finding out how the game is meant to be played? Classy guys, real classy.

OT: Seriously though, what the fuck, guys? Everyone's been claiming that the Kinect 2.0 is really a piece of shit that is just as laggy as the last version, and you're not doing anything to convince them otherwise. I mean, no actual in-game footage, let alone showing the players and the in-game action side to side, for ANY of your proposed games.
I WANT to be impressed by the Kinect 2.0, just like I wanted to be impressed by the original. But it really feels like you're just trying to hide the inadequacy of your console for as long as you can while spouting PR faff about how wonderful it's going to be.
Seriously, developers who are incorporating the Kinect need to put their money where their mouth is or shut the fuck up.
