Wind Waker HD Gets Heartless With Hero Mode

Go forth, brave little pot-breaker.

Nintendo is an empire of nostalgia. Its roster of characters has been gently worn by the hands of time, carefully managed by a team of handlers. While the upcoming Wind Waker HD will stay true to the original decade-old nautical adventure, Nintendo's latex-gloved specialists are doing more than just giving it a facelift. To maintain its time-defying properties, Wind Waker HD will also feature a new difficulty setting and optional new sailing mechanics.

Upon starting Wind Waker HD, players can select either Normal or Hero Mode. Normal Mode plays almost exactly like the original game. If this isn't your first time sailing around the Great Sea, you can kick it up to Hero Mode, where enemies deal twice the damage. To make matters worse, the only way to heal is to either purchase potions or to [a href=http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=118]quaff a fairy[/a]. It sounds like a great new challenge for those who can sail through the game by memory alone.

Previously, sailing about the Great Sea was mostly controlled by the winds, which you could change with a song. Wind Waker HD will have a Swift Sail feature that allows you to remove that extra step and simply sail wherever you will, with the wind always at your back. That's a feature that even weak mortals playing on normal mode can take advantage of (if they so desire). While the new updates are fairly minor compared to the rewiring that Master Quest received, they seem to safely straddle the line between a faithful update and a modern upgrade.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD sails onto the Wii U this October.

Considering that I almost never restore health using hearts in Zelda games as it is, it probably wouldn't be too much different for me.

I'm looking pretty hard at this game, but I'm going to have to wait for the next full Zelda before I bite the bullet and purchase a Wii U. Wind Waker is my favorite in the series, though, so I'll be picking this up as well.

But changing the direction of the wind was involved in some of the puzzles... Besides, it felt more like actual sailing when you had to worry about where the wind was.

The added difficulty is good though. The only complaint I ever had about this game was that it was too easy.

And now I'll try to complete the Three Heart Run with this mode on. Wish me luck.

I think you missed the word "optional."

Oops, you're right. Well in that case, I'm sure this game will be awesome. The original is still one of my favourite games ever.

So glad they put in the difficulty setting, and unlike Skyward Sword, you aren't forced to beat the game in order to play. This make the game even more interesting, it's one of my favorite games, but as far as combat goes, it hasn't really challenged me in so long.

Also, Link being able to take self pictures with the pictobox? GOTY!

I hope to God that I'm not forced to use Swift Sail because that sounds boring as shit.
Nope, it's available after the first dungeon, but you have to bid for it at the auction house on Windfall, so you can avoid it if you want.

I'm still waiting for news that they made a new dungeon or two to make up for the cut ones in the original. That is the only reason I'd want this. Hero mode might make it worth picking up. Though, I'd still just get constant blue potions from the plant dude in Forest Haven.

That makes me happy. I will still buy it even if I don't ever use it.

Also those selfies are hilarious.

In an interview (which I am unfortunately too tired to find right now), they said the dungeons that were axed will not be present in this game because ultimately those cut dungeons ended up being used in future Zelda games already. It was never said what dungeons were reused in future games but I get the feeling that some of the general ideas were repurposed into Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. It would have been nice if they had come up with something brand new to fill the space, but Aonuma went on to stress quality of life changes were more important than adding in new content. I do think that there needs to be an extra dungeon for that 3rd pearl but alas, I think Aonuma has squashed that idea.
