Uncharted, Metal Gear and Mass Effect Films Still Underway

Avi Arad, the producer behind several upcoming videogame adaptations, believes the genre can take off the same way comic book movies recently have.

Hollywood has been producing licensed videogame movies for a couple of decades now, and with few exceptions, they tend to do very poorly. That's something Avi Arad, one of the producers behind the original X-Men and Spider-Man movies, hopes can be changed. With a belief that successful videogame adaptations could one day be as popular and common as comic book movies, Arad is hard at work on a variety of licensed projects, including Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, and even Mass Effect. <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119250-Uncharted-Movie-Dumps-Director>While some of these projects have suffered setbacks along the way, Arad happily stated that all three films are still in pre-production, and hopes they will reach theaters in the next 3-6 years.

"I think that film studios are bankers and filmmakers are risk takers and somewhere in between we meet on the battlefield," Arad explained. "And the moment one video game movie goes through the roof, it's the same thing that I've been through with comic books."

According to Arad, the safest bet for the videogame-to-smash-hit-movie forumla is Uncharted. "I think Uncharted will be very successful," he said. "It's a father and son game. There are things about it that are interesting. I think the world of antiquities theft, there are many countries in the world that realized they're being robbed and they're trying to recoup these important pieces."

Uncharted certainly has cinematic elements of the Indiana Jones variety, but when it comes to story, Metal Gear Solid has more to work with. "If you go to Metal Gear Solid, it's actually full of storytelling," Arad continued, "And with Metal Gear, you have Cain and Abel." By the same token, Mass Effect trilogy-length storyline has lots of material to draw from when crafting a movie-length character arc. "It's a big idea, that we, humans, are the least developed, the least trusted, it's an interesting mirror image of our world, we are the aliens now ... Love the project, it's getting there, it's been a lot of work; some movies take five, six years before they're ready."

Arad acknowledges that many difficulties exist when translating videogames to film, but he still makes a great point when comparing the genre to comic books. Even after the success of Richard Donner's Superman and Tim Burton's Batman, superhero stories were largely considered impossible to adapt. It took years of multiple box office smash hits like X-Men, The Dark Knight, and Iron Man before Hollywood finally started to change its tune. Videogames are certainly in a similar state today, but if something like Uncharted can help us forget about Max Payne or Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, then maybe one day some director will create The Avengers of videogame movies.

Well, I hope he's right. I'm not sure Uncharted will be the huge hit. It's basically Indiana Jones but with different names for the characters. Or maybe that'll help it, I don't know.

As for Metal Gear, I'd be surprised if Kiefer Sutherland isn't cast as Snake, since he's now the voice of Snake in the game. Don't suppose they'd get David Hayter to write the screenplay? =P

Video game adaptations are always hit and miss..you got flops like Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Doom and you have a fairly successful one like Silent Hill.

For Mass Effect they should go for the first contact war, and stay away from the trilogy.

If I wanted to watch a Metal Gear movie...I'd just watch a play through of one of the games.

Besides that, saying that video game movies can make it big because comic books have made some big movies ignores one very important fact - comic books and movies are both non-interactive mediums. Video games are by definition interactive. How do you make a Mass Effect movie and still keep in touch with the multiple endings (let's pretend the choose the colour of your explosion of ME3 didn't happen for the sake of argument), create your own character, etc strengths that Mass Effect is known for?
That's why I avoid anything that comes from a video game that isn't interactive. I avoid all the novels, comic books, movies etc. I play Assassin's Creed games, but then I don't bother with the books I see on store shelves.

Oh, I didn't know Max Payne had a sister. Are they twins? :p

And I don't have any interest in seeing any of those films. MGS is already like a movie, painfully so these days. Uncharted would just be a shit knock-off of Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider sans a lovely bottom. And Mass Effect will have a shit ending that doesn't make sense.

Why not make something based on an interesting game rather than a popular one. Amnesia? Journey? Professor Pigglesworth?

It's a real mistake to try making one of these story-heavy games into a movie. I don't see why some video games couldn't potentially be made into actually good movies, but since filmmakers clearly don't quite know yet how to do this, they should stick with adapting games with the LEAST amount of story and player agency possible.

Remember Tomb Raider? That's actually not too bad a flick; it's at least not a disaster. And why? Because the one big thing that stands out to most people about the franchise is the character of Lara Croft. No one gives a dingo's kidney about the story of Tomb Raider (before the recent reboot, anyway), it's all about Miss Croft doing improbable archaeology in tight clothes. All they had to do was stick the character into a pseudo-fantastical adventure story and BAM! they had a functional, some might even say decent, video game adaptation.

With a game like MGS or the ME Trilogy, the story is the strong point in those games. We, the fans of the franchise, already have a story we love, canon events and characters that should not be messed with. So, now you either rewrite what we love in an inevitably crappier way, or you tell exactly the same story we already know and played ourselves. It's pointless and can only result in pain.

Captcha: movie star. Oh, no you don't, captcha! You keep Ben Affleck away from these projects!

I think we shouldn't get excited as everything we love about those games will be butchered and simplified in order to "appeal to a wider audience".

I kinda want to play an action game about Max's twin sister. :)

Thanks! Fixed.

Didn't they already make Uncharted about 30 years ago? I think it's called Indiana Jones.
Uncharted would probably make a better Indiana Jones film than the latest Indiana Jones film.

Metal Gear Solid is so far up it's own ass I really don't see the movie making any sense. If Holywood couldn't make decent movie from Tomb Raider what it will do with something that preaches more than TV evangelist?

Uncharted is perfect series for this. First game is basically based of script for "Romancing the Stone"

Mass Effect... Star wars again. I already feel the ain people will feel when they see the movie. A TV series from competent team would make much more sense. This is going to be really REALLY bad, i bet on it.

I liked Max Payne, but different topic for another day.

If video games like MGS are basically a movie in of itself, it would be very hard to translate to a film. Kojima was pursuing a MGS film for years but too many setbacks made that improbable. Besides, who are you going to get to play as Snake or are you going to have someone lip-sync while David Hayter does the voice?
