FIFA 14's Only Free To European Xbox One Day One Preorders

It's mixed message time from the folks at Microsoft.

If you were hoping for a free copy of footie heaven FIFA 14 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124265-FIFA-14-For-PC-Wont-Use-Ignite-Engine] on your Xbox One, I hope you preordered the Day One edition. Otherwise, forget it, as social marketing manager Graeme Boyd has confirmed that only the Day Ones will be getting it, "while stocks last." The European - not US - Day Ones are getting a free digital copy of the game, as well as a special controller and an exclusive Achievement code, for those of you whose lives are ruled by Achievements.

This information from pre-order announcement was [https://twitter.com/AceyBongos/statuses/374488164175343616] - when it was thought to apply to all Xbox One preorders - seen as an attempt to appease consumers upset with the price disparity between the Xbox One and the PS4.

UK retailer GAME is currently selling the Xbox One at preorder for £49.99 on Xbox One [http://www.game.co.uk/en/xbox-one-console-with-call-of-duty-ghosts-game-exclusive-deposit-243447?pageSize=20&searchTerm=xbox%20one].

Europeans prefer the PlayStation and it's cheaper. It's cheaper even if you buy FIFA 14. There is literally no incentive for FIFA fans to pre-order an Xbone. What the hell is Microsoft thinking?

If you are paying £150 more for a day one version I fail to see how the copy of Fifa is "free". From what I can tell you pay £150 more and get COD, Fifa and some digital stuff that costs nothing.

This is from the Xbox Day One page linked in the article. Even GAME is trying to convince people to get a Playstation.

EDIT: Apparently the price has been bumped up due to demand, so my first part can be ignored.

Psychology would be my guess. Sure, we know that the PS4 with FIFA will be cheaper, but your average parent probably won't. They'll go to [insert game store/online retailer of choice here] and see "New consoles? Little Timmy has been asking for one of them for his Christmas. And this one comes free with FIFA 14? Why, that's a game little Timmy plays! I shall get it post-haste!"

Never underestimate the value of the word "free" on the average consumer.

Interesting price quotes there...given that I have my deposit at GAME and the Day One edition is costing me £429 as quoted at the E3 announcement. Plus I would like to point out that I'm not paying £20 extra with my deposit, that will be discounted from the cost of the console so I have effectively paid £20 of the total price so far

Evidently you got in early, when it became apparent that Day One Xbones were going to be limited in number Game has been bumping the price right up, they bumped it up again when the 'free' games got announced.

It's very Microsoft that they wouldn't specify a maximum retail price.

Hooray for PR disasters!

They got better.

But yea seriously its listed in store at £430 for xbone and £350 for ps4 both have £20 deposits which are taken off the price on the day they're sold. Both now are on phase 2(so no more day one editions are left) and people 'should get them before xmas with a phase 2 deposit but its not 100%.

http://www.game.co.uk/en/playstation-4-console-deposit-242518?pageSize=20&searchTerm=ps4

Ps4 ran out of launch day preorders about 5 weeks ago while the xbone ran out about 2 weeks ago.

Correct.

They were bought by OpCapita, which is an investment group. They decided to keep the name the same for the time being as well as most of the shops open.

GAME is the only company in the UK that is a purely gaming shop (GameStation is a part of the same company) so I imagine it was considered a much better option to simply keep the company running the same. If they'd simply sold everything off and closed them all then the only placed to buy games would be supermarkets, online stores such as Amazon or shops that are multi-purpose like electronics stores that sell televisions and such.

Ahhhh...Fair enough.
I just thought the Company was dead and that was them rolling in their grave :p

Not sure how many people will care/be particularly affected by this particular development but it's yet another feather in the Xbox One's dunce cap.

But it only works for day one pre-orders. Besides, an average parent checks prices in this economy. They don't know which console does what and which one is better so they just go for the cheaper one. In this case the cheaper one is also the better one.

Does this mean that people started pre-ordering Xbones because they had no other choice?

Urm, the price is bullshit. I pre-ordered day one edition and its set at the same price as MS said it should be. Also, the £20 deposit comes off the price when you go get it. So, i think i little bit more research should be done tbh.
