PS4 Launching in Japan in February

Despite November releases in North America and Europe, the PS4 won't hit Japan until February 22nd, 2014.

Sony is a Japanese company. That in mind, you'd generally expect its new major hardware to launch in Japan before, or at least at the same time as in North America and the rest of the world. In a pre-TGS announcement however, the company confirmed that the Japanese edition of its next console, the PlayStation 4, would not be sharing the November 15th launch of its <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127035-PlayStation-4-Debuts-November-15>North American counterpart, or even the console's November 29th release in Europe. Instead it was revealed that the PS4 won't be coming to Japan until February 22nd, 2014.

According to Sony, the delay comes in part because the of the company's desire to ensure all of the console's western-developed titles are properly localized for the Japanese launch. Japan-based gamers will be able to start placing pre-orders for the PS4 on October 5th. They will have access to the base PS4, which will cost about the same as the North American model, as well as several bundles, including one that packages the PS Eye and sells for 43,980 Yen ($440). To help make up for the delayed release, the initial round of Japanese PS4's will also come with a voucher code for the game Knack and will include an year long extended warranty on the console.

This is interesting on several levels. For one, as many long time console gamers can attest, in the past it's often felt like Japan has gotten just about everything first. It's arguably natural, as western markets and developers have become more prominent, that this might shift, but it's still somewhat odd to see Japanese gamers having to wait for a console being made by a Japanese company. It will also be neat to see how this plays out with the Xbox One. Currently, Microsoft's planned launch regions exclude Japan. That said, were the Xbox One to launch there prior to the PS4, it might have a chance to establish a foothold that the <a href=http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/04/01/why-did-xbox-360-fail-in-japan>Xbox 360 and Xbox was never really able to do.

Hmm, seems like a risky move just taking a dump on your most loyal market. But they must see more money in nailing the western launches first. Let's see how this plays out.

I am not surprised by this, they already have the Japanese market, so that isn't a problem. They are however worried about meeting the demand elsewhere since they are having a higher than expected demand already and are concerned about meeting that demand. With Xbox only being released in 13 countries at start, and then still a limited market after that, it is greatly increasing the demand for PlayStation probably more than they can keep up with currently. They are smart by waiting until after Christmas to worry about their home front when they already have it in the bag there. It is smarter to make sure you meet demand in nations where the competition is steeper to increase your overall sales. Plus they are giving Japan the PS Vita TV on November 14th anyhow, so they will still get a new toy to play with.

I am sure their Japanese fans will be content with them bringing in record sales as well. They are well known for supporting their home team.

PS4 pre-orders for Europe and the US have been better than expected, plus in Japan there is no competition, nobody wants a Wii U and Microsoft aren't even bothering with Japan this time, this seems logical. Sony know they have to compete elsewhere and they are doing, none of this five hundred and ninety nine dollars and we are constricting supply to maintain cache rubbish this year.

Xbox likely wouldn't gain a foothold in Japan if it was launched alongside the US/EU dates, it's just not a thing that happens in Japan.

It's neat that the Japanese gamers get a voucher code and extended warranty. I wonder if it'll be out in Japan before Xbox One? *snigger* It wouldn't want to to struggle against one of its main competitors..

Hmmm. Yeah, but do they really have to wait till end of February? Really? Seems a step too far for me.

I can't see the Japanese market complaining too much. Sony are taking the extra time to make sure its done right.

Same way rockstar did with GTAV

As a consumer im cool with that kind of practice.

It's also important to note that there's been a general slump in home console sales in Japan, and at the moment it's really mostly been about the 3DS - in other words, the flavor of the month (or rather, the flavor of this coming quarter) has been the handheld market with which Sony has barely gotten a foothold in.

The Playstation 4 if released in Japan on the same day as the rest of the world, would likely not sell a whole lot, regardless of its quality over its competitors.

After 2 gens of "no games" with the Xbox brand, in addition to the horrible build quality of the 360 resulting in RROD - with the Japanese being somewhat obsessed with quality - the Xbone probably has about a snowflake's chance in hell of getting much of a foothold.

My thoughts exactly.

The WiiU has already been out for nearly a year, and the Xboner will not be an issue in Japan (both because Microsoft has no intentions of rushing to market there anyhow and because the Xbox line has always been a huge bomb there), so Sony has every reason to focus on the western market and making sure they saturate that with as many PS4 consoles as they can.

It's strategic thinking, they just don't want to come out and say that because it might miff some Japanese gamers to hear their loyalty and purchases are assumed. And rightfully so.

Honestly, the Japanese market has taken such a hard turn towards mobile stuff since the PS2 days I doubt they'll even notice. Plus, I'd say it's a console market that they're at effectively zero risk of losing. The Wii U isn't going to eat into PS4 sales there, and the XBone just won't sell there period.

Well this seems like a little bit of a misstep, but considering that Microsoft has been tripping head over heels non-stop since the Xbox reveal, it's probably going to go unnoticed. I mean, the PS4 coming out three months late in one country is pretty small compared to the Xbox One coming out late in...I lost track of how many countries. And those are countries where the PS4 could afford to move in and take over. Sony isn't going to lose Japan to the Xbox One.

Theyre probably holding back for special edition releases.

You know, like the ones you get every other month for every other console in Japan?

I know if I was a Japanese gamer I'd feel like was being taken for granted. Sony may have the console market locked there, but that doesn't stop Japanese consumers going to Sony's competitors on other products. That's what I'd do in their shoes.

I would kind of like this decision were I a Japanese gamer. At least with a slew of localized titles I wouldn't have to worry about the game library being a big empty room.

Looks liek the demand for PS4 was so overwhelming they ran out of boxes to sell. though its still sad its nto realeasing worldwide. i wish we should start doing such things as game release and console releases globally, none of this "week late for you" crap we got now. or in this case 4 months late.
