Warner CEO Drops Wonder Woman Big Screen Hints

Huge plans, he says. But what are they?

Sure, there are superhero TV shows out there, but as far as DC's concerned you'd be forgiven for thinking that Superman and Batman are the only two properties it has. However Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara, speaking at an entertainment law conference, has dropped some hints that suggest things may change. The studio has huge plans for "a number of other DC properties," he says, particularly on TV, but one stands out: Wonder Woman.

"We need to get Wonder Woman on the big screen or TV," says Tsujihara. If this happens, it'll be the first time since Lynda Carter's 1970s series that the Amazon has her own show; she's never had a live action movie, though there is a 2009 animated film. There was talk, in 2012, of something called Amazon - Amy Manson of Torchwood fame was supposed to be in the running for the lead - but fell flat [http://www.deadline.com/2013/07/cw-eyes-flash-series-with-arrows-greg-berlanti-andrew-kreisberg-david-nutter/].

Maybe Tsujihara's just blowing smoke - he only came on board as CEO back in March, after the TV show and movie had stalled - but if the CEO says something ought to happen, it's a pretty good indication that something is going on behind the scenes. Did that TV script suddenly become less problematic, or has something happened to make a movie more palatable? Hopefully we'll find out before too long.

I'm glad that they're doing this, but that picture just made me realize that Wonder Woman's outfit...let's just say I'm not a fan and leave it at that...IT LOOKS SILLY!

Apparently that's from the 1970's TV show.

Lets hope its better than nearly every other recent DC movie.

Despite the fact that my favourite superhero is Batman (due at least in part to him being my first superhero) I've often thought that when I have children one day the superhero that I want to use to introduce them to superheroes is Wonder Woman, as played by Linda Carter. I think she is a great character and I do hope that this isn't just a rumour as the character deserves more media attention from DC in the form of movies and tv shows than she has received.

They couldn't get Superman right, I can't even begin to imagine how badly a modern Wonder Woman movie will turn out. Though I guess it can't be any worse than Hollywoods last attempt... a movie so bad it never technically got released. haha

It amazes me that we have so many fantastic Justice League animated series/movies and the film guys don't just copy them in many ways. Seems like all the hard work is already done for them to me, but I guess most hollywood asshats still think all animation is beneath them.

Well it's not exactly their fault, outfits in comics/cartoons tend to look silly when translated to in real life. And they cannot change it that much without a huge disapproving uproar from fans.

It's why live action Dragonball is always horrible.

As long as the costume isn't silly and it doesn't have some soppy romance sub-plot I'd probably give it a chance. But Wonder Woman hasn't had the best of luck with TV lately. She was always pretty good in the Justice League 'toons so the writers just need to make more of that and not try and mess around with her too much. Although to be honest I'd rather just see more Justice League than any individual DC character at this point.

If they can get it right, I'm all for it. I'm not particularly invested in Wonder Woman as a character, but I have a certain fondness for good superhero movies and I like any idea done well.

hmmm no mention of that aborted pilot episode back in 2011? Probably for the best.

I saw the incomplete version of it before they fleshed out all of the special effects. It was all over the place--the three identities for Wonder Woman were exhausting. While it was well filmed, the writing was still rough and the characters were hollow. Wonder Woman killed a guy by throwing a steel pipe through his adam's apple, impaling him to a wall. It wasn't something young kids could watch. More like Wolver-Woman. Maybe dark and gritty is what they were going for; it just didn't feel right. The best thing about that pilot was Elizabeth Hurley playing the bad "guy". She acted circles around everyone else on camera and she pretty much outvamped everybody at age 47 (at the time).

Say what you will about Lynda Carter. The word that I most often use to describe her is "statuesque". She was a very beautiful and impressive presence as Wonder Woman. Finding someone to fill those very patriotic boots is difficult. Would a Wonder Woman reboot today be given the ablity to fly? 1970's WW couldn't. She mostly just jumped around on off-screen trampolines and landed in circus nets. I think she got the ability to fly during the George Perez period in the series around 1985 or so. At the time I think she could "soar upon wind currents". Then, they just said "Screw it. She can fly now. Invisible jets are lame."

"Ma'am, I don't see what holds that costume up."
"You play your cards right and you will."

As long as they stick to what makes Wonder Woman work and make it fun to watch, it can't fail. I'm trying to stay positive here. I like both DC and Marvel, they both have strengths and weaknesses, and I want DC to be as seuccessful as Marvel's been lately.
