Microsoft Issues Xbox One: Invitation Trailer

This is an invitation from the all-in-one, to everyone all over the world.

If ever you've dreamt of zombies bursting in on your study hour and dragging you away, this is the Microsoft Xbox One trailer video for you. In a nice touch - especially considering the console's relatively limited worldwide release [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/126850-Xbox-One-Will-Launch-In-Just-13-Countries] - Microsoft goes global, to persuade you that its next generation console is the one you really want in your living room.

Yes, by the way, that is Zachary Quinto, not a lookalike. Microsoft can afford it; it's alleged that the tech giant is about to spend on games [http://www.theguardian.com/media/2013/oct/25/xbox-one-steven-gerrard-advertising], reinforcing the message Microsoft has been trying to send out to customers these last few months.

"This is an invitation to a new generation," says Microsoft, "here your games and entertainment are no longer separated, but together in one." Come November, we'll see whether people buy what Microsoft's selling. This should be a very interesting Christmas season.

That's a well-made trailer. It's a shame that they had to show the GUI, or the console itself. They now carry a pretty bad stench, if you ask me. The XBOne, associated with consumer-unfriendliness and a company that doesn't give two shits about its customers and their privacy. The GUI, a nightmare that began on Windows Phone (and was actually nicely usable back then and there), and is now residing in Windows 8, resented by most who have to use it.

On the other hand, this is the first well-made thing to come out of Microsoft in over 2 years, so I guess it's OK. I'm still going to closely look after how well WINE is doing, and I'm going to hang onto my PS3 for as long as it works (and, judging by the fact that it still does - that'll be a long time without buying a new console).

But a lot of us are quite happy to have our games and entertainment separated. That is why so many people liked game consoles over PC's, they are/were a device purely for playing games on. If I had an option for a cheaper console, without Kinect, apps or any of these other non-gaming features, I'd probably be considering it (now all of the bad stuff has been removed).

I was also going to mention the funny part of a global invitation considering it's only being released in 13 countries, but you already did. Although the woman with the Russian accent was kind of funny, considering Russia isn't one of the countries that will have it on launch.

I've got to admit that's a great trailer, possibly even better than the Playstation memories trailer which I absolutely loved.

I'm still not getting an Xbox One though, no amount of flash or buzzwords are going to make it seem more appealing (contrary to Microsoft's expectations).

You don't need to spend so much money to make a good trailer. Look at what Sony are doing. They have great trailers, that are all about the games, without the need of high paid high profile hollywood actors.

I really dislike the way MS is doing things the last couple of years. It's like there's not a single sensible person in charge of this company.

That's a strange argument for getting a console over a good PC. (Long time GNU/Linux user here - and yes, I used GNU/Linux BEFORE this crap you call "Windows")
The best argument for consoles I could find is that consoles used to basically be "put disc in drive -> play game" kind of devices, making it much easier to play games. Now... with mandatory installations, patching, and the whole load of other bullshit you have to endure on consoles, I fail to see why it's worth it. I get the same stuff on PC, and have less problems in the end. Hardware is dirt cheap these days (want something that can run CoD:Ghosts? Less than a PS4 if you've still got some kind of Monitor lying about), and you can get by without Windows if you want to (which does require a bit of additional configuration in the end for the games to run - but that's explained well on a game-by-game basis, I tend to find). And wouldn't you specifically want to have all of your entertainment in one device, even if it is just to spare you from the hassle of having two different clipboards?
I know that the XBOne handles this stuff rather poorly, but could you expand on your point a bit? I'd find it interesting to find out about the other reasons to actually buy a console (except, you know, for the exclusives).[footnote]I own a Playstation 3 and play games on it, I just fail to see what the balls it's got that a PC hasn't.[/footnote]

You're basically right. But there hasn't been a sensible individual in charge at Microsoft since the very beginning, if you look back, so we might as well be grateful if anything good comes out of that strange machinery that's being operated by a blind, deaf, schizophrenic Badger.

That's a pretty good ad. Sony and Microsoft are both doing in well in that department. Sony's "Perfect Day" song ad gets stuck in my head every time I see it!

Have to say, I definitely prefer this one to the Playstation Memories one. First thing MS have beaten Sony in ad/PR-wise for quite some time.

It was an extension of your second sentence. A device purely based around gaming is nice and simple. You get the game, you put it in the disc slot and you play it. That's it.

Now they are trying to be a PC, but with all of the inconvenience of a console menu and zero customisability. If people wanted an all-in-one device, they could get a PC. If they want something nice and simple to play games on, without any hassle, then that's what a console was for.

But like you said, that is starting to change now, especially with the constant patches, installations and such. The all-in-one features are just going to further that. Especially when the apps and so on have an update and you need to install them before using them each time.

Yeah, I like the new Sony trailer much better, but they're pretty much the SAME EXACT TRAILER, lol:

The Xbox one is fun, but loses points for showing me things I don't like about it, such as "Xbox, on!", but the PS trailer is catchy, and we got to see the Dragonborn fighting a Thalmor-looking guy.

You may not like the "Xbox, on" bit, but there are people that do. The number 1 reason I actually like my current Kinect is for the voice commands, if nothing else. I've wanted an "Xbox, on" command since the first Kinect.

Oh come off it already. At this point, that post was all about bile-spewing and not actually anything constructive. We get it, you don't like Microsoft, or anything they do apparently. "Let's just jab at the ad, the console, their OS, their phone, etc.." The "pretty bad stench" comment about showing the UI and console are just in poor taste at this point. Of course they're going to show all that - it's their product.

They're both good, but I have to say I preferred the Xbox One Invitation ad. Then again, in the past I've always enjoyed Microsoft's montage trailers from E3 and other conventions, including of all things the Games for Windows montage from TGS '06. Can't remember where it was from or what year, but there was another Games for Windows montage that had some nice stuff from Rise of Legends. Too bad there was never another in that series...

I'd just like to note that when I went to watch that video, YouTube advertised Sony's Perfect Day PS4 ad ahead of your embed of the very same...

Looks good, but still not buying one either. My loyalty remains with the PC Legion.

Too little too late. I have already moved completely to the Steam system I was using before.

Long time Linux user, so the SteamOS was already something I was looking forward to, all Micro$oft did was push me away from console completely.

So in other words, it's possible for two people to have different opinions!? You have your opinion, I have mine- I just don't like gimmicky voice-command stuff, as it's never been useful in practice in application of it that I've ever seen, aside from maybe BT voice command for mobile devices while driving. Plus, a significant other or someone randomly walking into the gameroom and saying "come on, turn your xbox off" and it shutting down mid-game would get old REAL fast, lol.

Except that's not how it works... You can't just walk into someone's room and yell "Xbox, Off" and have something happen. I sincerely hope you don't actually think that... >_> Have you actually tried the Kinect before passing judgment?

My point was right on the heels of what you just said, actually. We all have our own opinions, but in the case of this advert, I just didn't understand why an add that (despite the fact that you wouldn't use it) "loses points" for advertising a key feature of the console. Just because you wouldn't use the voice commands doesn't mean that they shouldn't advertise it. Sure, the "hardcore" gamers may not use it, but the buyers for Xbox One go well beyond people who only want to game on it, otherwise they wouldn't bother implementing have the crap on the console if they didn't think they'd make money.

It's moving beyond being a gimmick in my observations. Developers are just figuring out how to use the Kinect in a "normal" way. I don't use the hand tracking stuff, but a few useful examples of the voice tool that I use personally (almost literally daily) are; Playing music when I'm up and about doing things in my apartment, skipping tracks for both videos and music, sending audio messages, Netflix commands, and possibly the best gaming related implementation I've seen for it - Skyrim dragon shouts and quick actions.
This is all useful stuff, which then breaks the definition of "gimmick" to me.

Well, no complaints here. That was a pretty damn well made ad... Though I question the intelligence of the guy who thought it was smart to follow the zombie XD

Now hurry up and show us actual footage of the Kinect 2.0 being used in-game and may just admit the Xbone has promise. Or maybe it's already come out and I haven't noticed?

That ad was fantastic, it reminds me of the great stuff Microsoft used to do.

Come on Microsoft, we need more ads like this!
