PAX East 2014 Completely Sold Out

Hope you already got your ticket...

PAX East 2014 is sold out. Completely. Boston's gigantic gaming expo will run from April 11-13. Three-day passes for next year's show sold out within minutes [http://www.joystiq.com/2013/10/24/three-day-passes-to-pax-east-2014-sell-out-in-minutes/] of going on sale last month.

The news came this morning via the PAX twitter account [https://twitter.com/official_pax/status/398459386974449664]: "Sunday passes are gone! We are now entirely out of badges for PAX East 2014."

The rate at which these shows sell out never ceases to amaze me.

Dragon*Con really needs to start capping their badge sales. Raising the price over time doesn't really stop people from paying. D*Con 2013 had waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many people.

You know, if these conventions get any bigger, they're going to have to look beyond the usual convention center in order to hold more attendees and stands.

How come game sales are one of the lowest in decades yet gaming expos sell so many passes? Pax East popularity only proves gaming is in demand yet big publishers expect 2014 to be equally bad as 2013 was - as far as profits go.

It shows that people rather talk about games then play them!

Because the conventions are relatively small-- IIRC, PAX 2011 had 70k people. By contrast, AAA games need to sell millions of copies to be considered successful.

Not sure how many people know this: there exists a sub-culture of bot-buying in the world. People use bots to purchase absurd amounts of passes for events, selling them out, then scalping them on ebay for absurd prices.

Oh, wouldn't you know it?

This has been going on for years and is one of the major reasons huge events sell out so fast. It's also one of the major reasons super popular restaurants will be constantly booked up.

You can read more about the bot wars here:

I was lucky enough to snag a 3-day pass within the first 30 minutes they went on sale. It was a nail-biting experience - waiting in a virtual queue just to see if there was a 3-day pass left.

Glad I'm goin, though. See some of you there!

Yeah, ticket scalping is one of those things that should just be outlawed. It's a scummy practice that is aimed to work against the consumer in every possible way.

Anyways, I was actually considering going to PAX East 2014 and then this happens. So much for that.
