Riot Making League of Legends' "5 X vs. 5 Y" Mode Official

That "5 X vs. 5 Y" bug [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/128451-League-of-Legends-Bug-Allows-Every-Player-To-Pick-The-Same-Champion] we saw pop up earlier was actually an in-development game mode.

A little while ago, we saw some tech-savy League of Legends players discover a "bug" that let every player pick the same champion [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/128451-League-of-Legends-Bug-Allows-Every-Player-To-Pick-The-Same-Champion]. Dubbed "5 X vs. 5 Y" mode by the community, it turns out that it wasn't a bug, but an in-development game mode that Riot has now unveiled as "One For All".

One For All will be part of something called "featured gameplay modes" - a rotating suite of wacky and experimental game modes, much akin to Left 4 Dead 2's "mutations".

Featured Gameplay Modes are about ready to burst onto the League! We have a variety of experimental modes - each with a unique spin on the classic League of Legends formula - that we're looking to introduce one at a time. We're limiting the availability of each mode so that you can try out a variety of different game types. After they're brought down, we'll check out your feedback as we develop new game modes - there's always a chance that we'll bring back the ones you love the most, too.

While the One For All mode will only be featured in the Summoner's Rift matchmaking queue, Riot says that players will be free to try it out in any of the game's map via custom games.

Riot did not give a time frame as to when we would see the featured gameplay modes feature released, saying that this is just a very early look at the system (most likely spurred on by the "bug" from earlier in the month).

GOOD! New Game modes are the best way to improve replayability of games. New champs are fun, new maps add a nice change of scenery, but new game modes supremely change up the way you play on a more fundamental level, adding a breath of fresh air to the game.

Kudos Riot. Kudos.

5V5 HEIMER ONLY! OUR DONGERS WILL BLOT OUT THE SUN!

Seriously, this is so awesome. I just wish they would have put it on howling abyss.

Cool, but this part makes 0 sense to me. Why would you rotate ones out at all? Just leave them there and let people play the type of game they want.

Actually, this might be the best move they could make.

The majority of LoL players, I think, are there to play the "classic" mode. I'd wager a minority of their big player base want to play something else, and even then, not often. For exemple, while I find ARAM fun and relaxing, I mostly play them to do just that: relax and have fun whitout all the stress of a ranked game. So, let's say, maybe 1 or 2 aram games in 15 normal/ranked games.

Now add this to the variety of funky modes they want to try....there might be too much modes. Meaning that if someone want to play 5X vs 5Y, he won't be able too, cause a larger percentage of the already small playerbase willing to do something different is busy playing aram, dominion, rocket-teemo or something else. By putting a mode in the "spotlight" every week, they might guarantee that you will be able to find a game with others players.

Don't know if it's clear, but it's my take on it...

Edit: And in any cases, every mode will be able to be played via custom games, so nothing of real value is lost there; only that a different mode is "encouraged" each week or some such

Still seems kinda strange to me, they have more than a large enough playerbase to support multiple modes of play. That does seem to be their reasoning, though.

left 4 dead 2's mutations, (which amusingly enough were indeed referenced above), acctually provide an excellent example of why doing it this way is good. For a while people were constantly saying they should unlock all mutations at once and just let people play whichever one they wanted.
Eventually they have done that, and the result is that you can't find a game for the one you want, because the player base is too divided. where as before, when they were only avaliable on the set rotation, you'd atleast be able to find 1 or 2 games running for you to join.

I guess my POV is just coming from a guy who never looks for a game with random people online, and always plays with a group of friends.

On top of this, you have the "McRib Effect", where a product (game mode, in this case) that is only available for a limited time will have a larger number of consumers simply because you can't get it whenever you want, so you might as well get as much as possible NOW, as well as the uncertainty of when you may be able to get it again. Absolutely right, this is the best way to play it.

And I can't say I'm too upset, either. As a fan of Halo and Gears, when both of those games do featured for a limited time sets (Toque Bow Tag, anyone?), I would be remiss to hate on them for this. While I liked One for All, I know for a fact that ARAM has lost its taste in my mouth based on how much I've played it due to its readily available status.

I really want to see 10 Lucians, with 6 Runaan's Hurricane each, all firing their ultimates at the same time.

League Of Legends becomes a bullet hell game.
