Trion Worlds Does The Voxel With Trove

The F2P title will take Minecraft-like exploration and crafting into a persistent online world.

Back in the day, all first-person shooters were called "Doom clones", regardless of their Doom-like qualities. Perhaps one day we'll find a convenient label for the tide of voxel-based exploration games we find rapidly rising to our waist. The MMO specialists at Trion Games have announced one themselves. Entitled [a href=http://www.trovegame.com/]Trove[/a], it aims to mix procedurally generated worlds, persistent player creations, and RPG elements, in one colorful, free-to-play wrapper of a game.

The label Minecraft clone is especially inaccurate here, as Trove is more inspired by [a href=https://picroma.com/cubeworld]Cubeworld[/a] than anything else. It lets players explore and quest through a blocky landscape as they both find and craft new items. While the world constantly remakes itself, your Cornerstone, a home base of sorts, will always remain. Players can craft new weapons, creatures and environments, and those creations can actually appear in the game world for others.

Trove started out as a side-project by a few Trion employees, but now they feel that it's ready to get the attention of a full project. However, there's still plenty more details to nail down, and if you'd like to voice your opinion, you can sign up for the [a href=http://www.trovegame.com/]alpha[/a] and get a sneak-peek.

Hey, uh, Trion? Could you maybe use some of that side project time to make the chat function in Defiance function properly? No? You want to make a Minecraft MMO instead?

So voxel MMOs will be the new big thing, best of luck with that then I really have no need to them.
Also devs do consider making the majority of your assets not block based because it looks like ass, Minecraft is tied to that due to it's mechanics which you don't have.

Have to agree with that, if Starforge can manage to look so damn pretty, so can everything else.

The world looks exactly like Cubeworld just with better monsters but worse PC models.

Ditto on that. Instead of putting resources into fixing/improving a game which really needs it you just skip off onto another project which is pretty much a ripoff of something else. Good job Trion, you'll be lucky if Defiance the game isn't dead and buried by the time the next season of Defiance the show starts.

Sad thing is, I honestly enjoy both the show and the game. In fact I love the show, and would love the game, but the game is just unforgivably broken in a lot of ways, with the chat function being the prime example: how do you screw something so simple up so badly? There's a great game design buried in there, but it's implemented badly. Which is much more frustrating than if it were just your standard crappy tie in game. If it were all crap, I'd write off the $10 I paid as me being an idiot for buying a licensed game. But it's good at its core, which makes things worse.

When I first saw this my reaction was, "These are screenshots of Cube World." Then I saw the video and thought, "This is exactly Cube World. Why is Trion releasing Cube World?" Then I showed it to my friend, and what he said changed my opinion.

"This is what everyone wanted Cube World to be."

I definitely agree. It kind of makes me angry that Wollay of Cube World dropped the ball so hard after tons of people bought his alpha. There has been zero updates to the game since its alpha release. I figure if Trion can make a Cube World that is actually supported, has more features from the word go, AND is free to play, they have piqued my interest.

I know he's recently come out saying he is still working on it and he's just been busy moving apartments and working on the updates. It's still pretty bad how little he's interacted with his customers.

Who would have thought that almost 2 years later, Trove would be doing well (I just got into it a few weeks ago) while Cube World has still yet to release an update or any news. I think a few weeks ago Wollay supposedly said he's still working on it, but... yeah, whatever. That ship has sailed. Atlys said it well with the statement of our expectations for Cube World. It feels kind of like what Cube World would have been if it hadn't withered up.

While I don't think Trove is the ultimate sandbox MMO experience, it has a surprising depth to it. It always amazes me the amount of content a game can cram into compared to a "blockbuster" like Minecraft - take Terraria's latest update for example. Minecraft was the one to break the new genre out, but we're going to see it continue to grow and evolve. Trove is a fun game to play - and it's free.

You realize this is 2 years old :p How did you even come across it?
It is the ONLY post about Trove on the forums when I did a search - and I didn't feel like creating a new one. I'm surprised you came back to it! It's funny about resurrecting old threads; some people complain when someone creates a topic and one already exists (though I'm pretty sure we can all agree that 2 years is beyond the statute of limitations for that). I petitioned years ago that the News Room forum should have a mandatory lock on topics after a set amount of time after one user was going through and reviving old threads with pointless contributions - which made the news page look like it had a lot of new information.

Did you purchase Cube World? I'm constantly amazed at the fiasco Cube World turned out to be. It's a wonderful example at how early access can go wrong. Was it fun? Sure - but it wasn't a complete game and had such promise and potential. I joke while playing Trove that "they've done a lot with Cube World, this game is amazing!" which inevitably ticks someone off. But I continue my joke with, "Wait you're telling me someone would put all that time and effort into something that held such promise, and then just disappear without finishing it up? That's inconceivable!"

I did purchase Cube World but I don't feel ripped off at all. My friends and I all got a ton of fun from the game and sure we are disappointed that the dev has just disappeared but we all feel like we got our moneys worth from Cube World.
