Sega Working on More 3D Classics for 3DS

While Nintendo seems to have abandoned its 3D classics initiative for 3DS, Sega is planning on keeping them coming.

"3D classics" was an initiative from Nintendo to re-work classic 8-bit era games into 3D for its 3DS handheld. It kicked off with Excitebike when the system first launched, and... has kind of lost traction since. Not to worry, as Sega, which recently released Super Hang-On and 3D Space Harrier in its own 3D classics initiative has announced that it has many more titles in the works.

James Booth, an assistant producer at Sega's Hardlight Studio, recently sent a Tweet to Sega CS3 producer, Yosuke Okunari, thanking him for his work on Sega's 3D Classics line. Okunari replied [https://twitter.com/LinearLoveStory/statuses/406710593635115009]: "Thank you. We develop the 2nd series for Japan. If this overseas release succeeds, it may release these in the world."

This looks promising for fans of classic Sega games reworked in 3D. Confirmed future titles to be released under Sega's 3D classics banner include 3D Sonic The Hedgehog, 3D Altered Beast, 3D Ecco the Dolphin, 3D Galaxy Force II, 3D Shinobi III, and 3D Streets of Rage. These will all be released some time next month.

As for the unconfirmed future titles that are in the works, the obvious choices would be Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 but Sega has a huge backlog of great games that could deserve the treatment.

For the record, Nintendo games released under its 3D classics banner were Excitebike, Xevious, Urban Champion,
TwinBee, Kirby's Adventure
and Kid Icarus.

Sega does what Nintendon't. =P

90s marketing slogans aside, it's neat that they are continuing to do this. Gimme the main Sonic games and I will pay!

I'd suggest they 3D-ify the Shining Force series but I don't want them fucking up fan youtube accounts again...

I had all those games when I owned a Sega Mega Drive. All they need to add is that Tetris clone with the gems.

I was just thinking about that motto and knew I would be beaten to it!

I'm hoping Sega releases some Alex Kidd honestly. Hell, they could give a discount if you buy Alex Kid in Shinobi World and Shinobi III at the same time (I think...this should show how often I download from the e-Shop).

If this is anything like the cave story "enhancement" it's not worth anyones time and you're way better off just grabbing the originals.

They should put stuff like the panzer dragoon series on the 3ds if they want to spruce classics up since they already are in 3d but awkward, headache inducing early 3d that would actually benefit from a makeover.
Or clockwork knight. Dark savior.
Lots of stuff on the saturn that barely anyone has seen, most of it arcadey games that would fit perfectly on a handheld.

*SIGH* Goddamit Nintendo. I haven't bought a handheld from you...ever. My last handheld was the Game Gear. Look at this s***. Now I have to go buy one of these 3DS deals. I heard they even have Starfox 64 on it. Damn was that a good game. Almost bought it then. Held back. But now? You release Hang-On in 3D? My favorite game growing up besides Fantasy Zone? WT actual F Nintendo. Take my money and be done with it. You win. So you kids. What's a good Mario game for this system? Yes I have Google. I want YOUR opinions. That's why I subscribe to this site. (BTW, never played a Pokemon game either. Too old I thought, but many of my friends love it. Suggestions on where to start?)

EDIT: Had a GB Classic grey brick, Batman on GB Cream Spinach color FTW,(that old behemoth is still around somewhere actually, just doesn't have a battery cover anymore), Lynx, Game Gear and a purple GB Color. I had the handhelds, just got them as gifts a kid, for the incredulous.

You know I hate to be the nay sayer here, but what exactly is the benefit of superfluously adding 3D to these games?

It looks cool? That's pretty much the only reason.

Kirby's Adventure actually looks downright beautiful with 3D. it's like a pop up storybook adventure, it doesn't affect the framerate at all, and it hasn't changed the game mechanically. I'd go so far as to call it a flat out improvement...doesn't even give me headaches like a lot of the 3D games do.

It's not a 'remakeover' like Cave Story 3D, it's just releasing it in the e-shop with optional 3D.

If you are getting a 3DS, my suggestions are Super Mario 3D Land and Pokemon X/Y. Both of them are great games. I've also heard good things about A Link Between Worlds.

Except it doesn't. More often than not the 3D actually detracts from the experience rather then adds anything, so unless they're actually adding mechanics that make use of the 3D I fail to see the point of this. It seems to me it would be cheaper and more cost effective to just release these games unaltered on the Nintendo e-shop, but then what do I know?

Now it even comes with a song =D.

Seriously though I would love me some classics and maybe the old sonics in stereoscopic 3D to boot.

Hell I'd settle for just the Alex the Kidd series.

Milking it for all it's worth, eh? I've seen so many Sega compilations on different systems over the years. Now they're putting out 20+ year old games for $6 a pop in eye-bleed-o-vision. I always hated the pricing on the virtual console. Adding something to the game deserves a higher price, but a putting in a gimmick feature or none at all means old games should have been a dollar or 2.

I'm with you on that (and not just because I can't see 3D, not at all). What kind of 3D are we even talking about here? Is it just a quick remaster so that some details will pop out, or a full 3D remake, using 3D models and such? Because if it is just the first one, it's completely pointless.

Well I suppose if they are actually completely redoing the graphics with 3D models and such so that, let's say, the original Sonic the Hedgehog looks something akin to Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode Whatever only in 3D then that's something; but if they're just adding 3D to the game but otherwise leaving it as is then I equate that to converting a movie not shot in 3D to 3D. It doesn't add anything and sometimes can even detract from the experience.
