You've Used PS4 Share 6.5 Million Times So Far

[tweet t=https://twitter.com/PlayStationEU/status/408548416898076672 align=right]

Are you liking the share button, the PlayStation folks ask?

Tis the season to quote statistics, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la la, and PlayStation's got you covered. The PS4's Share function [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122265-Sonys-PS4-Goes-All-In-for-Social-Gaming] has been used 6.5 million times since the console launch, Tweets PlayStation Europe.

Not bad, for a function inspired, at least in part, by hardcore lunacy Dark Souls [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/129895-Dark-Souls-Inspired-PS4-Sharing-Options]. With 2.1 million units sold so far, and more to come over Christmas, a mere 6.5 million Shares will soon seem like nothing.

Just try not to Share anything too risqué. Sony wouldn't like it [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/129507-Sony-Reserves-Right-to-Monitor-and-Record-PS4-User-Communication].

When it works correctly. Right now there seems to be a problem where every other capture isn't what I tried to save. I got a collateral damage kill (sniper bullet killed the guy I was aiming at and the guy behind him) in Battlefield 4, but when I hit the share button it saved a video that was completely unrelated to what I wanted to share. No way to go back and get that footage. I wish they would just lift the HDCP restriction for games and let me capture my own video.

Do those 6.5 million include the accidentals on account of the share button being entirely too close to the D pad? Have seen a few complaints about that so curious if that helps the tally.

I was wondering the same thing, actually. When Sony revealed the new controller, I thought it was pretty stupid to have a dedicated button on the controller for nothing but streaming your gameplay. Not like streaming couldn't be activated in a pause menu or something.

But hey, the PS4 has Facebook integration at its core because Social Media. So whatever.
You can actually change what the share button does. Mine is set up so that when I press it, it automatically saves the last 15 minutes of game footage, takes a screenshot of whatever I'm doing and pulls up a menu asking what I want to do with them. There is a button on that screen that allows me to start streaming instantly (my PSN is attached to my Twitch account) but my internet connection isn't good enough for that. There are other less intrusive options as well. I could have it do the same thing, but without pulling up the screen and interrupting gameplay if I wanted. It can also be told to do different things depending on if the button is held or not.

As far as accidentally hitting it goes, I'm not sure how much of a problem it will end up being. As it stands, the share and options (start) buttons are really high up on the controller, making it feel really unnatural when I have to reach up to press them. I haven't managed to hit either one of these buttons accidentally yet, but then again one person isn't a good sample size.

I still wish they would remove HDCP though...

So with 2.1 million PS4 sales, that's a whopping 3 uses of the share button per person machine...
I was thinking the same, it doesn't seem a lot really considering it was one of the things Sony made the most hoorah over. I bet even the crappy Kinect on the Xbone has been used more than 3 times per user going by averages. Its not like the share button is like Twitch, its just to share short clips and screenshots and stuff.

shares captured
This sounds kinda deviuos. they "captured" people sharing, very NSA like. Its almost like "criminals caught". maybe im reading into it too much.
