Rumor: Sony Clearing Out UK PS3 Stock

UK game retailers have reportedly been told to not expect any new PS3 stock until September, in order to clear what is on store shelves. Gee, it's almost like Sony is planning on releasing a new model or something.

MCV UK [http://www.mcvuk.com/news/35356/PS3-stock-dries-up-price-cut-due-September] reports that two of the UK's "leading national retailers" have claimed that Sony has told to not expect any further PlayStation 3 shipments until the end of the month:

"Sourcing PS3 stock has been a challenge for the last two to three weeks," said an unnamed spokesperson. "There are obviously lots of rumors flying about as to why that might be. I don't think it's to do with demand, though. Sales are low at the moment and have been for a while. We've been told not to expect any further hardware deliveries until September."

This comes a week in advance of Sony's press conference at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany next Tuesday, the 18th. One might hazard a guess that Sony will be announcing something at said press conference - that there may well be a reason to be clearing current PS3 stockpiles. A reason that has been a persistent rumor for quite some time now, with more and more evidence piling up in support of the idea.

(Here's a hint. It starts with an "S," and ends with a "lim PS3.")

Yes, there's nothing officially confirmed, and we won't know for sure either way until next week, but ... really? Come on, at this point it's practically a given. There is so much evidence supporting the idea that Sony will be announcing the slim PS3 - plus a price cut for the console - in Cologne next week, that it would be a much bigger surprise if, uh, they didn't announce it.

Don't put the S word and S brand name together. That is, if you value your LIFE.

Why do they always do a slim version of all of their consoles, it's so predictable now, i don't see how they can try and keep it a secret, IT's not so much are they going to release a slim version more of when are they going to release it.

Am I detecting a pattern here? So can we expect a Slim PS4 at some point in the distant future?

hmmm i wonder what that could be?/obvious sarcasm.

serousliy though, i would laugh if it was not the slim PS3. plus it would be hilarious if the slim PS3(if that is what they will announce.) ends up having more troubles then the 360's dreaded RRoD

Am I the only one who thinks that the Slim PS3 is still ugly as hell?

I'm going to be happy to buy a phat PS3 come next year.

Basically the ONLY two leading retailers for games in the UK. Game and Gamestation...
Would this count stores that stock games among other things?

Cos in that case, there are much larger retailers.

I was thinking the same thing: a friend of mine who's getting a ps3 soon wants to wait for the price cut but isn't sure he wants a new model.

One thing all of the console makers have learned is that you can release spontaneously combusting hardware and there will still be plenty of suckers who will buy it even after the problem is well publicized.

I'm going to be wary of every console coming out in the future. Never buying one within the first few months at least; just to check.

Really, MS should be making a slim 360. They're the one's who need to have a new disc drive, totally rebrand and distance itself from chronic hardware failure, and attract the more savvy consumers. I didn't buy the ps2 until the slim because the original ps2 had hardware problems half as much as the 360.

I don't see how people are expecting both a slim model and a price cut...

They just managed to lower the original unit price by 70%! How could they do it again while putting the power of the ps3 into something very small at an even cheaper price?!

(unless they take even more components out)

A slim PS3 seems likely since 1 and 2 both had smaller versions made as well, although my friend believes that the PS3 requires so much cooling that it can't be made smaller.

Doubtful because Sony actually tries to make a quality product, not one that'll fail after 6 months.

...uh, assuming they're able to manufacture the parts that go into the PS3 cheaply, I'm pretty sure that the Slim PS3 will be running on the same now-cheaper parts. Why would they suddenly go back to using more expensive technology?
