Sony to Investigate PSN Login, Friends List, and Store Issues On PS3 and PS4

Sony is aware that users are having problems with logging in to the PlayStation Network and are investigating.

If you were planning on spending your holiday time gaming on your PlayStation 3 or PS4, chances are you've encountered an issue or two when it comes to logging in, buying something on the PlayStation Network or even checking to see who among your friends are online. In a post on the PlayStation forums [http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Network-Support/bd-p/22039] PlayStation Support forum user "Unicorn--Justice" has mentioned that Sony is aware of the problems and posted the following message.

Hello PlayStation Community,

We have noticed various reports of connection issues with PSN including, but not limited to friends lists, game download, purchase, and login issues. We are aware of the issues and we appreciate your patience while we investigate.

Thanks,
U--J

Checking the forums [http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Network-Support/bd-p/22039] itself, you can see topics created by irate users experiencing various problems that all pertain to PSN not working as intended, which is a shame for those who want to pour in some online multiplayer during the holidays.

Based on my own experience, I could log in just fine, but I can't access my friend's list, nor can I play online multiplayer on the PS4. Hopefully, this is just a case of PSN being hammered with new users and not something more sinister, since some people have yet to forget 2011's big PSN incident [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.278835-PSN-Down-Worldwide-Is-Anonymous-to-Blame?page=7].

Can you log in to the PlayStation Network now? If so, can you also set up Party Chats and play multiplayer? Let us know what's happening on your end.

Are they also aware of their last couple of updates slowing everything down?

I'm able to log in, but everything else seems to be taking too long to bother with. Thankfully, I just got Pokémon X, so I'ma just patch it on the 3DS shop, and...Oh.

I'd make an Xbox joke, but I didn't get any 360 titles for Christmas, nor have I had the opportunity/need to log in.

To be fair, Microsoft seems to have sailed through the Christmas period without much trouble at all. I've heard stories about PSN, Nintendo and Steam all failing at times but nothing about Xbox.

Anyway, sucks, but it's almost to be expected at this point that there will be trouble around the Christmas period. So bravo to MS, I suppose.

I have noticed that it does take way longer than it normally does downloading stuff, and hopefully they can get this fixed since it's kind of a bummer right now.

Good ole holidays making just about everything stop to a slow crawl. :/

I don't know how, but I was able to snag the patch today before it went down for maintenance. Last night was a different story though.

Take a chance, save in Lumiose City. :D

A touch surprising, since Microsoft couldn't keep their service up for like the first four Christmases of the 360. But good on them.

My battery was dead today. I guess it didn't have much juice when I tried last night.

Thankfully, at least I know what to avoid.

Main problem with that glitch is if you save on the circular parts of Luminose City or on some of the small outskirts. You can save inside stores and Pokemon Centers just fine actually.

Depends how good the xbox is doing. Sony is excusable because (from what I've seen at least) the PS4 was the more popular console this christmas, and they are thus dealing with a heavy load. Steam went down because they offered Left 4 Dead 2 for free, that caused a massive rush. Same with GoG offering Fallout 1,2 and tactics that one time.

It may just be that MS didn't have to deal with that much of a rush this year. But yeah, the service has been excellent at the moment for that. Even Ubisoft coped fairly well, I remember last year the AC servers were not working for shit.

The Ps4 had sold more than the Xbox One, but both consoles are selling very well, with the main constraints being supply side rather than a lack of demand.

Really, it's no surprise that PSN is struggling under high loads unlike Live. Microsoft have pretty consistently been better at avoiding downtime and other issues with Live for a while now, almost certainly due to a higher investment by Microsoft into their online network.

Yeah, I guess. It's easy to forget now that they're both competing for the "best console" but MS have been doing this kind of shit for way, way longer considering their role in the development of affordable PCs, so it's hardly surprising that they have a slightly better grasp on it.
