Fire Emblem's Falchion Sword Recreated on Man at Arms

Swordsmith Tony Swattion has recreated Chrom's Falchion from the 3DS hit Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Fire Emblem: Awakening made quite the splash earlier this year when it released to <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/10165-Fire-Emblem-Awakening-Review>critical fanfare and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122726-Fire-Emblem-Awakening-Breaks-Franchise-Sales-Records>broke franchise sales records. That in mind, the game and franchise understandably earned a lot of new fans, many of whom have apparently been petitioning swordsmith Tony Swatton to recreate Falchion, the weapon of the game's protagonist Chrom.

Swatton finally gave these fans what they'd been asking for today with in a new episode of his YouTube series <a href=http://www.youtube.com/user/AweMeChannel?feature=watch>Man at Arms. Setting his sights on crafting a real life version of Falchion, Swatton first found a pattern on the internet that he blew up to an approximate size and then traced onto a quarter-inch thick piece of 5160 steel. From there he began using his tools to shape the hunk of metal into the fantasy blade.

In addition to the steelwork, Swatton also had to make bronze pommel and hilt parts that he and his crew cast in-house using custom handcrafted molds. As complicated as that sounds, "grinding the blade" itself was, according to Swatton, the "hardest work on it." This was difficult in no small part thanks to the extra complication added by the big fat decorative "donut" positioned at the base of the blade.

As hard as he had and his team had to work on it, the end results, much like his recent <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130564-God-of-War-Blades-of-Chaos-Come-to-Life>Blades of Chaos replica, are undeniably worth it. Watching his Falchion slice through cucumbers and soda bottles is pure magic and a must see for hardcore fans of Fire Emblem.

Beautiful seeing such a craftsman at work. And the end result really is something to be proud of. Amazing work.

You know he did the Buster Sword from Final Fantasy awhile back. As in a full size, big as a car Buster Sword, it's worth a watch if you liked this one. Instead of swinging it at things they had to carefully let it drop onto its targets. I think it went through a table as well.

I just got into Fire Emblem too, how convenient. Is Chrom the protagonist? I guess your character and Chrom are sort of dual protagonists? Well my main character is pretty useless at the moment, he's basically a walking game over unless i'm pairing him with someone worthwhile. While Chrom has hit critical carry mass and is onehitting everything. Yeah you keep doing that buddy, i'll just be over here not dying.

I'd say the story centers in on more on Chrom than on the player character.

I just recently got into the series with this game as well, it seems we have more in common than we thought, we're practically soul-mates.

That said, I found that the PC is actually quite the powerful mage, vastly out-performing the other two non-dark mages. I'm perfectly fine with having him the prime of a pair, usually paired with whatever love interest I choose, Lissa for this game. I'm only on chapter 15 so far, but he's one-shotting pretty much everything. After the class promotion, he can even take a few hits, you just have to position him as properly as the rest of the crew.

Man At Arms is a fantastic series. This is one of the cooler swords actually just because of the hole. Best one for all you Avatar enthusiasts out there remains Sokka's space sword.

I love this show immensely. Tony Swatton and the crew at Man At Arms do outstanding work with these swords and weapons from pop culture. I so want him to tackle the Green Ranger's Dragon Dagger and the other weapons from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles like Leo's swords.

Yeah me and mages have never had the best history together. You know when you get those two mage kids early on, the chick on the horse and kid wearing a stupid wizard hat? Both died in their introduction mission. Henry the potentially interesting freaky mage guy? Died in his intro mission. The dancer who lets you move twice? Died in her intro mission. Sumia and that other mage chick? Died in their intro mission. Oh and that one dark mage in Chapter 9 that shows some doubt about fighting? She died before I could get sissy baby Chrom in there to recruit her because she was threatening Cordelia and she freaking hurts. No mage survives contact with me.

I'm barely keeping Lissa alive, pretty much by having her support Lon'qu and having him destroy face with the partnership buffs and healing people whenever safe because she dies in one hit. Nowi is the only person with range in my team and that's not even proper magic, she just happens to be a dragon. I basically throw both my flying units (read: Cordelia/Panne combo with Cherche flying in solo because she's an odd number) in and only pause whenever there's an archer on the field. 25 damage to flying units my arse.

I don't think I even have a love interest, every female is either dead or going out with someone else. I just sort of stick my guy with Frederick...

I haven't even had one person die yet...

And Chrom is a sissy? That dude can solo their whole army. That's literally what I did to recruit Tharja (and that monk who was there too), literally just walked him solo right up to her.

Granted, this is totally off-topic, but I'm the opposite. Most of my party is mages or can otherwise use tomes, while my player character just one-shots everything (and is currently a Dark Knight, to keep the Sword and Tome ranks). I have a big thing for mobility and range flexibility, so I tend to avoid sword-users or archers while favouring mounted units and tome-users.

On topic, that was a pretty good rendition. Didn't have the bronze or gold down the center as in the game, but that's understandable. The real question is: how many uses does this Falchion have before it breaks? (No, the answer isn't infinity as in the game)

Chrom was a sissy at the time, yes. I was keeping him safe towards the back because he died easily and I was carving through the enemies with Nowi/Gregor, Cordelia/Panne and Lon'qu/Lissa all pretty freaking good combos. Lon'qu went full boss mode in that mission too, he made it through a turn on 9 HP when the enemy commander and 4 other guys were attacking him and took down 3 of them during their own attack phase. So hype.

Oh and that one archer dude "died" too. All these squishy people man, they might as well just not bother.

Pro as Heck Guide to Fire Emblem:

No matter what win in as few turns as possible, even if it means you have to drop someone into 4 guys

Disregard all ranged moves, melee fights only

Send flying units into archers because caution is for casuals

Remember to ignore enemy reinforcement points because it means leaving one of your guys on that one tile for the rest of the battle, this breaks your manly everyone charge in strat and these guys can be dealt with later as i'm sure they eventually stop spawning.

Send in Frederick to 1v5

Man of all the gaming swords out there, I did not expect him to make Chrom sword eventhought I owned that game!

I wonder when we will get to see Metaknight sword (it was one of his suggested weapons to forge at one of the end of his vidoes)?

Actually, a completely rigid sword would be more prone to snapping, cracking, and breaking. Some of history's most well regarded swords are most known for their flexibility, like the Viking Ulfberht. The trick is to create and forge a weapon that's hard enough to retain an edge, but it is still flexible enough to survive repeated impacts.
