EverQuest Next Landmark Dev Video Shows Off Advanced Building Tools

Associate producer Eric Smith, and lead building and UI designer Jake Sones, demonstrate building archways, copying and mirroring objects, and snap-to-grid mode in the upcoming free-to-play sandbox game.

The latest developer diary for Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming sandbox MMO EverQuest Next Landmark introduces the advanced building tools for the game. Players have complete control over building in their own land claim or plot, and can also make changes in the shared game world. The video shows the latest changes to the selection tool, allowing players to move a selection along any axis, allowing for rapid building. Associate producer Eric Smith demonstrates how copying and then mirroring an object allows players to build twinned staircases, a feature that simply rotating an object would not allow. The video also shows how to build archways and how activating the snap-to-grid mode can be used to build tightly-packed structures. While introducing these tools, the developer diary shows the player flying around their plot of land. Lead building and UI designer Jake Sones says, "Flying will be unlocked via progression in your plot only. We're not going to let people fly everywhere throughout the world, that would just be too powerful and ruin the game experience."

EverQuest Next Landmark is a free-to-play sandbox MMO. The game focusses on exploring massive worlds and procedurally generated adventures, defeating monsters, collecting resources, and building just about anything. Players can build objects and structures, manipulate the terrain, and sell their custom goods for real money in Player Studio, SOE's marketplace. SOE's upcoming MMORPG EverQuest Next [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/126545-EverQuest-Next-Redefines-Next-Gen-MMOs] will feature objects and buildings built by players inEverQuest Next Landmark, selected by the developers.

On December 19, SOE president Founder's Pack [https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/413798281378922497]. Three different levels of Founder's Packs are available, each adding more exclusive items and earlier access to the game as you go up in price. Once the game is released, it will be free-to-play, but if you're itching to get in on the game as soon as possible the cheapest Founder Pack with alpha access will set you back $59.99.

Seems like a bit of a dick thing to charge people $60 to be their beta testers doesn't it?

And then everyone else gets a functional game with many more features for free down the line.

I don't have a problem with this whole early access thing if the people that take that risk get some real benefits like discounts and free stuff.

This just seems a bit wrong.

What discounts? Most early access games are fully priced,if they get discounted its the same way it would be if it was full release.

Early access is kind of paying to be part of a focus group, can you imagine paying to see a movie where everything still looks like this

to then be able to give your opinion of it in the hopes that you are heard? To then complain if you arent even though it goes against the original concept?

Yeah, early access doesnt really make all much sense to me.

they aren't charging the applicants, they're just charging for guaranteed access (which probably won't eat into the normal applications since they want people with experience too) plus they're putting all of those basically exclusive items into the mix

business as usual for SOE, take it or leave it
