Roger Corman's Lost Fantastic Four Film Gets Doomed! Documentary


This Fantastic Four film has only existed in bootleg form since 1994, and now you get to find out why.

Once upon a time in 1994 Roger Corman - Pirahnaconda, Sharktopus, Death Race - made a Fantastic Four movie, and it vanished almost without a trace, leaving only bootleg videos and memories behind. It's supposed to be headed to cinemas at some point, possibly in 2014, but information is sketchy. There is a store [http://doomedthemovie.com/], but the store doesn't seem to be 100% functional yet. The blue-ray/DVD combo pack, for example, is listed as available for preorder, but once you get to the preorder page nothing seems to work. Maybe that's irony.

I'd say that 50,000 USD is more like 1/40th of the original budget, actually.

Hmm, that Thing costume looks better than the one from the recent movies and Doctor Doom doesn't look that bad either. Although the rest of the costumes look kind of silly (although pretty accurate to the originals I guess). I think I'd rather watch the doomed movie than whatever the new reboot is going to morph in to.

The short version for those who don't care to watch a documentary: most movie adaptation rights lapse after a period of inactivity. Somebody bought the rights without ever having a good plan to use the property, but didn't want to give them up. Thus, he teamed up with Roger Corman, dumped a small amount into a token movie to fulfill contractual obligations and buried it. That's it.

I've seen it, and its terrible. Like, Star Wars Holiday special terrible. One of the guys that worked at blockbuster had a copy back in the day.

I was thinking the same thing about The Thing. It reminds me a lot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Movie (from around that time) costumes but it looks more like The Thing from the comic books than the last couple of movies. I think it comes down to the fact that highly paid actors don't like to have their faces completely obscured; one of the things that made Dredd such a great movie-that guy (I forget his name) doesn't take the helmet off once.

Oh, sweet Christ!

I've seen the review of this "lost" movie by Sage and Linkara. Trust me when I say this, there was a major reason why this movie never saw the light of day. Between its bad acting, piss-poor story, and 1/3 of a shoe string FX budget, this Roger Corman turd makes the Tim Story directed movies look like Oscar contenders. I'm hesitant to even watch the full version by myself.

Here's hoping the documentary will shed some light on how this movie fell into comic book myth.
