Titanfall Limited Edition Controller Coming to Xbox One, Looks Sweet

The custom Titanfall controller will set you back $64.99, and will be available in limited quantities worldwide.

Xbox's Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb has pulled back the curtain on an exclusive limited edition Titanfall Xbox One wireless controller, making its way into stores on March 11th in the US, and March 13th in Europe, just in time for the game's launch. The controller will set you back $64.99, and you can pre-order it right now from the official Microsoft store [http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/productID.295576100?siteID=te1Fq2FCseg-8FeX5RhzXDIScqu7xGXkMw]. Or at least, you could pre-order it, that is, before its supply ran completely dry after only a few hours. Hopefully, it will also be available at retail (or at least get a re-stock in the online store).

"This unique controller was a collaborative effort with the Xbox design team and the Respawn art department," writes Hyrb. "According to Joel Emslie, Lead Artist at Respawn Entertainment, the goal was 'to create a controller that feels as if it is a piece of military spec hardware transported from the universe of Titanfall and into players hands.'"

Check out the controller in its full glory below (click to enlarge):

Hyrb also announced that for those of you not quick enough to snag one, he is also having a little competition where you can win one of the controllers. To enter, simply leave a reply on his official blog [http://majornelson.com/2014/01/15/controller-post/], stating what you are most looking forward to about Titanfall, by January 23rd. Winners will get their prizes a couple days before the game launches, and the contest is open to all regions where Xbox One is available.

A slick controller for what is shaping up to be an incredibly slick game. The hype for Titanfall is starting to reach critical mass, and it's definitely a title to keep a close eye on in the coming year.

I don't own an Xbox One, nor do I plan to, so this doesn't really affect me. However for what it's worth, I think that controller looks really ugly. The design is too busy, there's lines and little details going everywhere. I prefer my controllers streamlined and sleek looking.

That.....honestly looks terrible 0.o a few of the features have the potential to be neat looking but, all together it just seems....random.

The thumb sticks...they're in the wrong places. It's $64.99? For a controller?

Wow...the design looks a bit busy.

I tend to ignore everything with Limited Edition in the title, because most of the time it is just a cheap, poorly thought out money grab. It's a business decision that improves the game in no way at all. So I just dont care.

to create a controller that feels as if it is a piece of military spec hardware transported from the universe of Titanfall and into players hands.
So the military hardware in Titanland is overpriced and made from orange and black plastic?

If you didn't say this was associated with Titanfall I would have assumed it was something to do with, perhaps, Remember Me. Have a look at the box art for the two games and see which fits more with the colour scheme of that controller.

I guess they didn't think a limited edition grey-brown controller would sell enough?

It reminds me more of WipeOut, not so much in color scheme, but in the overall design. The stylized lettering, those geometrical shapes, it looks like it could belong on one of the vehicles in HD Fury.

This design sucks. Instead of putting a giant mech on there, they put some geometric shapes and serial numbers on on it. Unless you know a lot about the game you would think it had nothing to do with a single franchise. Someone on another site said they almost thought it was a Half-Life controller from the orange lambda looking symbol in the center. If they really wanted to make something memorable they could have redesigned the xbone controller to work a little better, (maybe in a shoulder button centric area) put the aforementioned robot visage on it, and kept the molds to make regular better designed controllers after these sold out.

Why buy a redundant piece of hardware that costs as much as another another game just because Major Nelson said it was cool? Does anyone know if you can split screen in Titanfall? If not then there's not much reason to get this anyway since most games are already moving to get you on a single box so Microsoft can charge more people for copies of the games and Live subscriptions. I've basically given up local multiplayer since most games don't support it very well, if at all, anymore.

I think I'm the firsat one here (probably ever if possible) that actually likes the design of the gamepad, the colours look basic but okay but I wouldn't call it ugly, I've seen some mad Catz gamepads that look ugly as hell.

I didn't say it was. They were always in the wrong places! :D

I always imagined they'd be a pain in the ass to use if you were left-handed. Also, yes, using thumb sticks to control an FPS on a flat plane is bad enough, but trying to hit or shoot from an airborne, arcing vehicle? Ooooh boy.

When the 360 first came out a new controller cost $50.00 so you are only paying an extra $15 for the "limited edition" version anyway. Not THAT outrageous if you are going to buy a new controller anyway.

I'm not sure why you mention the original price of the 360's controller. This exclusive XBone controller costs around the same in the UK as its regular counterpart - £45.00, or $70. I know the greedy bastards only give out one controller per console, but I still wouldn't fork out that asinine amount for another one.

I don't get it either. And, I've seen quite a few people say this controller looks "off" from the vanilla Xbone controller.

Maybe my eyes are broken? :/

Regardless, I kind of like the design of this special edition controller. It's certainly "ugly", but in a specific aesthetic fashion. It feels very much like a combination of corporate/consumer product aesthetics mixed with urban military camouflage. So...very 'in-theme' with the Titanfall universe.

OT: I'm still utterly baffled that so many people are fine using thumbsticks in a fast-paced multiplayer shooter... I mean, this is a game where you're going to be shooting at small, jetpack-equipped, wall-running targets, FFS!
This is why I'm going to try the game on PC. By it's very nature this game just looks and sounds tailor-made for PC.

I just hope Respawn releases the modding SDKs soon after launch. That, along with the game (hopefully) being good, would cement a purchase from me.

Now that you mention it, it really does seem like it's a design taken right out of Psygnosis' book of 'Wipeout' art direction.

Well, props for not being generico-gunshooty-gray or something. Not sure I'm a fan of the design overall, but it could be worse, and at least it's interesting to look at.

Unless it magically makes the games less crap or gives the console backwards compatibility, it's probably not worth 65 fucking dollars.

So glad I stuck with my 360 this generation. I suppose there's also the ouya which kind of sucked as a console the last time I used it, but that was only one hundred dollars. The Xbox One costs 5 times that and has less games worth playing.

I'm also not getting a ps4, for any fanboys who just got hard at the previous two sentences.

Well, if people want to buy an incredibly ugly controller for 65 $, that's fine by me. Whatever floats their collective amount of goats, I guess...

Hey guys, guess what? A new standard PS4 or Xbox One controller sells for around $60! So in reality, you're only paying $5 extra for the limited edition controller. But hey, that $5 could really break the bank, huh? What were they thinking?!

Moving on. It looks like something right out of District 9 to be quite honest.

And you know what? I LIKE IT. It's not the best design I've seen for a controller at all but it's definitely not too bad IMO.
