Miyazaki's The Wind Rises Nominated for Oscar Alongside Frozen

Hayao Miyazaki could get his second Oscar win with The Wind Rises, but Disney's successful Frozen is a tough competitor.

Hayao Miyazaki is no stranger to American audiences, nor is he a stranger to Oscar nominations. His latest work, a Japanese animated historical fantasy film titled The Wind Rises, was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film. It will compete against The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest and Celestine, and Frozen.

The Wind Rises is an animated film adaptation of Miyazaki's manga of the same name, which he loosely based on the short story The Wind Has Risen. The animated feature is a fictional biography of Jiro Horikoshi. Jiro's poor eyesight means he can never fly a plane, so he makes it his dream to build planes as an engineer, and this dream becomes a reality when he begins to work in aviation design as Japan moves toward World War II.

The Wind Rises recently lost to The Great Beauty at the top grossing film in the country of 2013 [http://www.goldenglobes.com/awards]. The film has not been released in North America yet, but Disney will release the film in theaters starting Feb. 21 with an expanded release one week later under Touchstone Pictures. The Oscar screenings of The Wind Rises contained the original Japanese voices with English subtitles.

Frozen won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film, beating The Croods and Despicable Me 2, both of which were nominated for the Oscars.

In the past, only Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away has won an Oscar (in 2002), and Howl's Moving Castle received a nomination in 2005. The Wind Rises is Miyazaki's 11th and final film.

Despicable Me 2 got nominated... really, it wasn't a bad film by any stretch but... *shrug*. The Croods I can understand as it looked beautiful and Frozen was a nice enough film, Elsa especially. I havn't seen The Wind Rises or Ernest and Celestine yet but i'll definatly give them a look.

Gawd, this looks adorable.

Well, it's nice to have Miyazaki back on the awards stage. I am a huge fan of his work and really hopes that he continues to inspire others to work on animation and animated movies. It's a nice counter to our Hollywood and it's a nice piece of Japanese culture that I don't want to see lost.

Note: I haven't seen The Wind Rises but I expect a touching story with human characters, beautiful art and great emotional scenes.

We'll see. Frozen was spectacular, possibly my favorite Disney movie in two decades.

And, strangely enough, Disney Animation has never won the Best Animated movie award since Pixar debuted. Ever. I'd like for them to finally take home the award.

Frozen was no Tangled, but it did do pretty damn well at the box office. And since Ghibli is not a well known name outside of certain nerdy circles, I don't think it has much chance against the might of Disney. Of course, Miyazaki's (for now) retirement could have an effect on the result and they might award the oscar to him simply in tribute. We'll see, but my money's on Frozen here.

Frozen was really, really good, and a good attempt at Disney breaking away and actually doing something good - the first thing good since Mulan, with a few exceptions here and there, but still generally crap.

But still, this is Miyazaki's final film... I'll go see it, definetely.

Not a fan of tearjerkers, to be honest. As much as I like Miyazaki, I hope that Frozen takes this one.

I'm rooting for Frozen on this one. Not a sleight against Miyazaki though. But I still remember what happened the last time one of his films won an Oscar... several thousand shoddy dub jobs and crappy series later...

Frozen's gonna win since apparently everyone has lost their collective shit over it. And I still can't fathom why.

But the snow's pretty!
I guess, but having *a* nice effect don't make a whole film.

"Let It Go" is such a good song!
Eh. Still doesn't make the movie. Aside that *one* song, what about the rest of the soundtrack? You hardly hear people say anything about that building a snowman song, and that's apparently the only other good one.

It's Disney Renaissance good!
No, it isn't. It's not Beauty and the Beast good, it's not The Lion King good, it's not Mulan good, shit, I don't even think it's on par with Pocahontas or Hercules.

It's a shame that The Wind Rises is going to lose to this. Guess people just don't like animated films that make you think/don't include song and dance numbers/don't have a stupid comedic sidekick/doesn't have an animal that isn't a dog that acts like a dog anymore.

Capatcha: hammer time
You're right, it is hammer time for Frozen nutters! *cackles madly*

Hercules.
Can I add in here? I think Hercules was supposed to be a movie about Perseus but Herc is more popular due to all the B-movies about him a decade earlier.

OT: I'm glad Miyazaki is getting all of this hype lately. The man deserves it.

Well shit, usually Ghibli movies jump from Asia to Europe, and then over to America. So either I missed that very short window, or nobody decided to release it over here.

I think it's a good thing. Unfortunately Kaze Tachinu only got a very limited release in the US, just enough to make it Oscar nominatable, so few westerners have really seen it. The Academy has snubbed Ghibli movie after Ghibli movie since Spirited Away won the award (although Howl's Moving Castle did also get a nod), even as they continued putting out gold, favoring much more obscure European films (though films like Persepolis did give me a better perspective on those movies).

It was only in theaters in LA for 1 week in order for it to be eligible for the Academy Awards, but it's getting a proper release cycle in February.

This film better win. Honestly, if Miyazaki loses to Frozen or...The Crudes...then I'm going to shoot myself. The trailer alone was better than any of those films. This is his "final" film, he deserves this.

I would love to see Disney return to form, but they haven't released a quality film in many years. I'm sick of poorly written 3D animation, I want an animated film with as much substance as style.

You know, I really want Chris Sanders to win an Oscar for 'The Croods'.

I just want him to win, since this might be the second time Miyazakis beats him. 'Spirited Away' ,rightly, beat 'Lilo and Stitch.' He also got nothing from 'How to Train your Dragon.' The guy has made some Oscar-worthy movies, he always just gets put up against the cultural juggernauts.

Everyone already knows and loves Miyazakis is already pretty well known and loved. Sanders needs some love too.

Oh well, He still wins other awards.
