The titles listed were played and evaluated by members of the Academy's Peer Panels to determine the final nominees. According to the presser, "These panels, one for each award category, are comprised of the game industry's most experienced and talented men and women who are experts in their chosen fields. The Academy's 22,000+ members then vote to determine the winners as part of a secure voting process in which the winners are not revealed until the evening of the show."

Set to take place on Thursday, February 6 at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, the peer-based awards show will be live-streamed in its entirety at 7:30 p.m. PT/10:30 p.m. ET.

Any surprises from the nominees? I admit, seeing Battlefield 4 given a nomination for "Online Game of the Year" is a bit surprising given the multitude of online issues [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130916-Battlefield-4-Experiencing-Multiplatform-Connectivity-Issues] the game has faced since release.

Finally, A Link Between Worlds actually is in the running for GoTY instead of Super Mario 3D World when it comes to Nintendo games. In my opinion, A Link Between Worlds is way better than SM3DW, which is still a good game, don't get me wrong but A Link Between Worlds did so much right that it deserves awards more I say.
Also nice to see Tearaway getting more recognition as well.

Agreed. It's time every game gets noticed and not just AAA, big-budget titles.

Again The Last of Us doesn't get an award for best music. I mean, I know it got nominated for practically everything else, but come on, GIVE GUSTAV SANTAOLALLA HIS AWARD ALREADY! Jeesh!

Also, outstanding innovation? The Last of Us? I love the game to death, but that's not really a quality I think it possess.

some of those nominees seems a little ridiculous. Outstanding Achievement in Gameplay Engineering: Assassin's Creed: IV Black Flag it's same game as the last one just more ships and it will get really repetitive fast and The Last of Us it is more story than gameplay and why not put saints row 4 and metal gear rising revengeance on the list

Can we all just acknowledge that RPG has failed as a classification? Any Genre that can include both Pokemon and Diablo is so broad as to be useless. The name of the genre isn't helpful either since it's a relic left over from the tabletop origins of some of the games in the genre. Sure, you can say you're 'role-playing' being a Pokemon trainer, but only if you say that in CoD you're 'role-playing' being an American soldier and in Papers Please you're 'role-playing' a customs worker. And at that point only the most abstract puzzle games don't qualify for the category.

Does RPG as a category have any unifying features beyond "Some sort of leveling system will be involved and there will probably be an inventory"?

Also, I'm slightly confused by GTA5's inclusion in the "Innovation" category. I'm not intimately familiar with the GTA series, but I thought that 5 didn't really do much that new or out of place for the series?
